As you’ve likely heard by now, Mr. Nate Berkus, interior designer extraordinaire (and let’s be real, cutie!), has some exciting things going on: a new book and a fresh collection for Target among them. What you might not know is how truly inspirational Nate’s approach to interior design is.

I’m the first to admit I don’t tend to read interior design books – I’m a page flipper, I’m not embarrassed to admit it. It’s usually all about the pictures, right?

But Nate’s new book, The Things That Matter, had me hooked after the first page. Nate’s heart, personal story and design mantra: “that your home should tell a story of who you are,” gets you right here!

The book takes you not only through Nate’s approach to design, but to the varied perspectives of his clients. But it all comes back to storytelling through the collection.

Nate espouses creating a space that feels assembled over time  – but if you need to fast forward things a bit Nate is helping you there too. His Target collection offers pieces with some serious story telling potential. The collection hits stores this week and my wishlist is already running over.

That’s why I’m so excited to announce the exclusive Nate Berkus, Things That Matter Giveaway!

  8. My favorite piece is a set of wooden alphabet animals. My daughter would select one for either my birthday, Christmas and Mother’s Day when she was quite young. It took a few years but I have a full collection. Every time I look at this set it brings a smile to my face.

  9. My home is filled with amazing things that I have picked up all over the world {antique print ads from Paris, lacquer boxes from Egypt, watercolors from Beijing}, but I think my *favorite* thing is a little giraffe figurine my father bought in Africa. It probably didn’t cost anything, but it’s a reminder of my pop at his happiest, travelling around South Africa before he got too sick to do anything. I love that giraffe, and it’s got a prominent place in my decorating.

  10. My favorite piece in my apartment a wooden black sign my mother gave to me that says, “I totally agree with myself.” Pathetic, but true. 🙂

It is red leather with the perfect plum colored velvet interior. 14. My husband gave me a beautiful Kate Spade vase years ago. The glass vase has lovely etched polka dots decorating the outside and I keep matchbooks inside. It’s one of my favorite things to look at because I can see all of the great restaurants we’ve visited over the years.

Great giveaway! I saw some of Nate’s items at Target this weekend and he has some good stuff!

  21. My favorite item in my house in my first needlepoint piece – it’s a still life of an onion with very dark darks and light lights. (Rembrandt-esque) Every time I look at it, perfectly framed and matted, I think of the year it took me to make it. I think about my needlepoint class and the ladies who have become like moms and grandmoms to me. It makes me proud and really captures who I am: traditional and yet oh so funky. rhermos1 (at) gmail dot com

  22. Nate the great! Everything this man touches turns lovely. My favorite object in my home is probably the raw-edge coffee table with iron legs that our friend built us for our wedding gift (we love Urban Hardwoods tables in Seattle, but they are quite expensive!). It’s such a central focus in our living room and we love to put succulents and our favorite books on it. Thanks for your consideration! xo – Kristin

  24. I love this approach to decorating. It’s so hard not to buy everything at once but so much more satisfying in the long run to have items that have memories attached to them. My favorite item is a framed miniature drawing of an elephant that I bought when i was in India. It was rather expensive (by India standards) and i was worried I was being ripped off but I just loved it so much I had to have it. Now, four years later, I love it so much and I’m so glad I trusted my gut!

  25. My favorite thing in my home is the wooden dough box table my grandfather made 80 years ago. It’s simple and beautiful and reminds me of him. kcady at pyramidcom.com

  26. My favorite piece is my home is the afghan my grandmother crocheted for me.

  27. A favorite object in my home is my headboard. It’s old and perfectly whitewashed wood – very beachy.

  28. Even though it sounds rather contrived, my books are so important to me– not really one item, but one category! When I moved across the country, books were some of the first things I packed, and unpacked. I have so many that I reference all the time for tips, guidance, and others for when I just need a good laugh.

  29. My favorite object in my home are my pair of 2 glass “bubble” lamps – the ones with glass circles all the way up! Found them for a steal at homegoods and whenever I see them in the blogosphere I get so happy that they found their way into my bedroom 🙂

  30. The illustration of our family.

  31. My favorite object in my home is a lovely terrarium that my boyfriend just sent me – it has a small fern and moss, both organically grown in Oregon. It’s lovely, and so is the jar it’s in. It makes me smile every time I see it.

  32. My favorite thing is my first real art purchase right out of college- a Karl Blossfeld print. I felt like such a grown up! 10+ years and a dozen moves later, I still have it hanging on the wall!

  33. My favorite thing in my home is my vintage crystal chandelier. I got it at my first EVER estate sale in a haunting mansion owned by an elderly man who went to jail for some type of fraud. His house and things in it were so intriguing (I’ve never seeing something so grand) and his life story was crazy. Although not the nicest story, the story of the chandelier makes it more special to me. It’s mysterious, kind of dangerous and from a life of luxury. I wish I would have bought the second one he had. I scored it for $50 in the last hour of the estate sale. Lucky me, people forgot to look up! 🙂

  38. There are two things in my home that I love and am extremely proud of, first is my dining table, it was my first home purchase when I moved into my very first apartment, and then my antique sofa table that is painted medium gray..I stole that pretty thing for $30 at a flea market and it makes my home feel cozy and vintage!

  39. I have 3 vintage milk crates that I bought off craigslist. I love them. We use them as recycling bins in our kitchen and they look great next to our stainless industrial looking range. Email: martin_ml(at)comcast.net

  40. I recently just moved into my first apartment by myself (sans roommates) and am purchasing my first set of furniture that is not second hand. My new favorite item in my home is a chartreuse coffee table/cart that is a gorgeous statement piece. My second is one of those treasured secondhand items that will last forever: a coffee table my parents received for their wedding. I’ve never felt happier at home!

  41. My favorite object in my home is an oversized painting of a reflection of part of the Getty in LA. It was one of the first paintings I did when I moved to California, and probably the best one I’ve done since. It’s the perfect size for over the bed so we don’t even need a headboard, and so far – the colors have managed to go with everything. It’s a nice reminder of when I first moved out here and I guess what I’m capable of.

  42. Favorite object at home is a beautiful carved wood side table from the first furniture store I worked at… something I know I will have forever.

  43. Hands down my favorite item in my home is a decorative coat rack that displays my jewelry. I hand-made it from panels of rotted wood I found in my granfather’s old farm. I then attached vintage mismatched knobs and hooks to hang my statement jewelry on. It is eclectic, unique, and reminds me of my grandfather every time I look at it 🙂 He was so excited to see the final product!

  44. My favorite item is an antique plate my parents purchased at a local auction. Looks beautiful displayed on our mantle!

  45. My favorite piece at our house are our cake toppers (a U and S) which my husband and I had spray painted gold the night before our wedding when we realized our custom Etsy topper was not going to make it on time haha.
🙂 We bought them from Michaels, made them our own and have kept them as a wonderful keepsake of our special day!

  46. My favorite piece in my house is a set of 2 refurbished antique ceiling tiles that hang in our bedroom. my now fiance and i bought them at the open air market in charleston, sc.

  47. I have a funny brass pineapple that opens up (like a Russian doll). I keep change in it. I spotted it at a small antique mall, and I carried it around while browsing before deciding to put it back. I left the store, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I went back the next weekend, and it was still there, so I knew it was meant to be. It was only $12…I don’t know why I didn’t just spring for it in the first place, ha.

  48. My favorite item is a tiny buddha statue that i grew up looking at in my parents house. Last time i was home I found it in a sad location in their basement so asked if i could have it. Buddha now graces a shelf above our dining table and i feel like he’s always looking down on us as we eat.

  49. Perhaps my favorite home item is a recent find, but a long love of mine. Growing up, I became extremely attached to elephants & have forever proclaimed Dumbo as my favorite Disney movie; at my parent’s house, I have a collection of over 200 elephant figurines, collectibles, etc. but there’s not much room in my current NYC apartment for them. I visited the BK Flea with a friend this summer and came across a solid brass elephant with inlaid mother of pearl, about 8 inches tall/10 inches wide. No doubt about it, that ellie came home with me! Sits proudly displayed in my apt now 🙂

  50. If my home was on fire, the first thing I would grab is a blue & white Staffordshire pitcher & bowl by Woods. This antique pair was given to me …the pitcher as an engagement gift & the bowl to match as a wedding gift. They are from my childhood friend ‘s parents, who were like a second set of parents to me. The note that came with these gifts is so meaningful too. It tells of how these pieces were put aside for me till I married. My “parents” are no longer here but all wonderful memories of them live on every time I look at these beautiful pieces. Kris

  51. My favorite thing in my house is my coffee table. I originally found the 100 year old oak herringbone table on craigslist and it was our table for four in our old house. When we moved and had a much bigger dining room, we got a larger dining table, but wouldn’t get rid of the oak table, so my husband cut the legs down (matching two joints together) and made it a low, and perfectly sized coffee table for our new living room. I will never get rid of it.

  52. My favorite thing in my house is a ferryboat captain’s wheel my boyfriend and I found at a flea market. It’s my favorite object because A. it was the first time my boyfriend has truly been into & involved in picking out decor for our apt. and B. it represents our lifestyle here in the Pacific Northwest. He’s a commercial diver and I grew up riding ferry’s to visit family. 🙂

  53. One of my favorite things in my apartment is my dresser. It is teal and has a great vintage vibe. I bought it used, and I love the feeling of having a piece of furniture that potentially has a great history.

  54. I have a flannel quilt from my grandmothers home tht I pull out every winter, it reminds me of spending holidays at her house, and since she made it, it exudes her style.

  55. Favourite item in my place…a fantastic glass lighting fixture made in Mexico I inherited from my grandma. ([email protected])

  56. My favorite thing in my home is this giant green glass decanter that my mom gave me. We were shopping together and we bought mother’s day gifts for each other that we picked out ourselves. It was a wonderful day, and my very first mother’s day (I was/am a new mommy!) and every time I look at that decanter, I smile.

  57. Dark brown leather poufs I lugged in my backpack all around Morocco. They have filled in at many impromptu dinners and for surprise guests. I love that they remind me of my travels yet are so useful. jillsackett7 at gmail
