4:00 PM Fashion Fix: {The Great Debate}

My dears, I’m having an internal fashion debate, so I decided to pose the question to you.

The Great Wedge Sneaker Debate

From afar, I’ve been loving the wedge sneaker. They take a practical piece and give it a fashion edge. They appeal to my California-casual side and address the fact that I actually hate most flats. I even adore them on most other people I see with them and yet, every time I come this close to picking up a pair for myself, my inner style editor says no way.

So I’m curious, what do you say? Should anyone over the age of 25 rock the wedge sneaker trend?

I’m going through the same thing. Beyond the age question though, I worry that they’re going to be passe before too long. I would probably just bite the bullet if I had money to throw around like that, but it just doesn’t seem worth it.

  2. My friend and I have been debating this one! I vote no – there is a reason to be sporty with a sneaker and then theres a reason for a heel, for me the two shouldn’t combine!!!

  3. Brandy Shuman

Listen to your inner editor! I vote no way! I go back to the age-old saying, “just because you can doesn’t mean you should.” Just because you can add a heel to a sneaker doesn’t mean you should :P

  4. I bought some $35 cheapies at Target. I love the trend but know I’ll be over it next week :-/

  5. errr…I had this debate with myself and what happened? I took the plunge. I literally just got them (and just posted about how I got them because of Lunar New Year) and I have to admit…I LOVE THEM. I got the Nike Dunks and while I told myself “never”…I obviously didn’t listen to myself. =)

  6. I’ve been wondering the same thing and finally ordered a pair of the Ash wedges (minus the velcro). I say as long as you balance it out with your own personal style, it can be pulled off.

I vote no! Aside from the age thing, I just think they look silly. High wedges on a sneaker are pretty redic, IMO.

  8. I’m going through the same thing, I’m pass 25 and I really want one. I even tried a pair of really cute michael kors ones but cannot bring myself to purchase a pair sigh…

  9. I’m liking the Aldo version! I don’t know though guys. I’m still very much on the fence…

  10. DO IT! I just got a pair and I love them (plus I’m on the wrong side of 25 myself). :-)

  11. I swear I love this look on everyone but me. I tried on a pair recently and I felt totally ridiculous. I’m not much of a sneaker girl to begin with, but the wedge is just too crazy for me. And for the record, I’m in my very late twenties. :)

  12. Right Lexi?! I tried on the original Isabel Marants ages ago and was officially not cool enough for those. A plain black pair could work…but I’m loving the input of the masses!

  13. 29 year old swede here,I’ve been rockin the wedgesneakers for close to a year. In the good ol’ homeland there’s really nothing to consider – does it looks awesome? Yes. Does it look aewsome on you? Yes! Wear it! Everything else is irrelevant.

  14. I’ve debated back and forth because I used to wear sneakers all the time. Yet, I still haven’t bought a pair because I don’t think it would fit into my current style. A few different pairs have caught my eye, so I am tempted. Maybe something sparkly….

    Hey Erin,
I can’t help myself but agree with you. I was thinking about getting them several times but I just can’t buy them…don’t know. Very strange.
But talking abot shoes…it would be awesome to read a post about flat shoes for spring, I mean really cool, business ones :) .
I just desperatly need some and nothing is catching my eye which is affordable.
Thanks for being suh an inspiration. Love reading your blog.
    Lots of love from Austria.

  16. Oh gosh, portuguese fashion bloggers are so into this and I hate it so much!
    blargh!

  17. I think they’re pretty terrible and unflattering. But to those who love ‘em, go for it! Just because they’re not for everyone doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with them.

So since I wore these in a play as part of my costume I will never be able to wear them in real life. I will just always feel like that girl with the cornrows and too skinny peach pants and not like myself. But for what it’s worth, Marylin (my cornrowed onstage persona) loved them to pieces.

  19. Shannon

Awful. No one should wear these. They will be one of those things we looks back on in 10 years and say “what were we thinking?” Just like the 80s.

  20. Sounds like they are not for you…find another alternative. I like them but almost feel like me wearing them would be just following trends..And I consider myself to be trend maker not a trend follower. Smile!

  21. I have seen the wedge sneakers an a lot of woman around San Francisco. Normally, fashion trends of this sort, take a long time for me to get used to. But, for some strange reason, they work, but only with boot leg jeans. Skinnys not so much for the woman over 30

  22. can’t do it!! I like a good basic pair of kicks :) and these seem to scream fashion trend, no?? btw…how are you?? :)

  23. I just can’t do it. I don’t judge anyone who does, but I just can’t.

No one over OR under 25 should “rock” these. They’re hideous! Sorry, but it’s true.

  25. Yes, definitely. I am way over 25 and just ordered a pair. I do think, though, that sticking to taupe/grey/black is a good idea for the over 25 set, and I also recommend dressing them up a bit with grown-up clothes — E.g.black leather shorts, slim trousers or jeans (though probably not jeggings) with a hip-length or tunic-length top, leggings, loose-fit (but not oversized) T and a blazer. In other words, you want to look like a grown-up who wants to be comfy and stylish at the same time.

  26. P.S. Love Manya’s comment about wearing them with bootcut jeans. I’ve not seen that, but I could imagine that could work with a button front shirt as an alternative to jeans and heels. That said, it does seem like part of the point of these shoes is for people to be able to see the shoes, though with a long bootcut or flare-cut jean, it could be cool if the shoe just peeked out a wee bit as you walk or while you’re sitting down. Will have to try it when my new pair arrives. (Also, I might find myself eating crow if my latest pair proves not to work as seamlessly as I think they will. My first pair was red, which I thought could be a nice pop with neutrals, but I was totally wrong. They screamed 19. My new pair is taupe and I think they will work with my grown-up casual wear, which is actually pretty polished even though it’s also quite comfy and easy to wear. I basically think anything can work at any age as long as you pair it with age appropriate items or wear it in an age appropriate way (e.g. if you’re over 40 and have great legs, you can still wear a short dress, but it should probably have a high neckline and 3/4 to long sleeves. If you’re going to wear platform sneakers and you’re over forty (or maybe even over 30), think about pairing them with the aforementioned dress. You’ll look like a grownup who’s wearing really stylish yet comfy shoes.

  27. Not a fan! If you are going to wear sneaks they should be comfortable and practical! If I’m going to be in wedges, I want something seriously cute! XX

  28. Loving everyone’s perspectives. I agree that it really is about how one pulls them off an while it can be done, I’m leaning further away from the trend with each comment. Thanks for the vote of style sanity friends!

  29. I have 2 pairs! I especially love my all-black pair and wear them surprisingly often. I was hesitant at first because my style is far from “sporty,” I live in a not very fashion-forward town, and I have a very curvy lower body for a petite (5’2) frame, but they’re really pretty wonderful!

  30. Sandra

If you like em, get them. I’m over 30 and wear them with skinny jeans or short jeans skirt and stockings on the weekend. A couple of my friends hate them, others love them. I’m sure we’ll look back in 10 years time, going ‘what were we thinking’ but hey… we’ve had fun with them :-)

  31. I’m way over 25 and got my pair some time ago. They are very confortable and in my modest opinion they add something special to a sporty look. Instead of leggings and short, try them wearing them with boot cut jeans. My number one rule when using mine is “weekends only! Never at the office. Hope you give it a try. Xoxo Bee, from Italy!

  32. That’s so funny Bee – I did see that photo in various versions and had to look 3 times to confirm that indeed, my style icon Giovanna had donned the wedge sneaker! Of course, she makes it look amazing. I think the pairing with the dress and the monochromatic black + statement coat are what really makes them work.

  33. Yes & Yes please do dare. Well, go Nike at least. The Nike dunks are “classic 1984 timeless.” I’m on my third pair. Yes, at times I feel a little unlike myself and have stopped traffic among various demographics. with a 6’4 fiance (2.5 hidden wedge amaze) I have no other way to keep up on the weekends but dare to wear – just do it!
