In celebration of the new month, we are dedicating July to one of our favorite pastimes: traveling!! All month long we’ll be sharing some of the best international homes and designers, featuring exotic editorials and fashion from around the globe, as well as scrumptious recipes and gorgeous photography from faraway places. I hope you’ll be as excited about it as we are!
We’re starting things off with a little exotic Monday Work Wear inspiration – mixed prints!
Patterns can be a scary thing for women to embrace. I for one, love bold geometric shapes on blouses and dresses, but rarely venture out to florals or polka dots. I know many people think patterns are unflattering and accentuate the wrong parts of the body, but I dare you to try out new things with me! I’m talking about pattern mixing. Scary, I know, but together I think we can do it!!
One way to master mixing patterns is to stay in the same color palette. If you notice above, the model’s plaid shirt and skirt have similar emerald green tones. Look at the long enough and the two pieces start to look as if they were made for eachother!
A second way to try print on print is to get a matching set. Suits are a fun place to start. You can get a blazer and pants or a shorts and jacket pairing. They particularly look great in larger florals. The secret: keep your blouse and shoe a nude color for balance!
I also love the idea of thinking of leopard as a neutral. At this point, it can go with pretty much anything. Invest in a leopard clutch or leopard pumps and they will never go out of style. With floral jeans or a polka dot blouse, you’ve completed mixing patterns with ease!
To get you started, here are some of my favorite prints to add to your closet. Use them as a base and go from there!
So, who’s with me in attempting pattern on pattern play?! I’ll be sharing my look on Instagram today and I’d love to see your courageous choices this week – tag me in your photo #patternplay @apartment_34 and you just might see your look in a round up coming to FB on Friday!!
