Style It Up: Get More Out of Your Denim!

I had such a good time styling my favorite closet staples earlier this summer that I decided to keep the fashion fun going! While I love high fashion and aspirational style, I’m a practical girl at heart. If you’re like me and have to get ready and out the door in 10 minutes or less, you need some no-brainer outfits that you just know are gonna look good!

I have a little style secret to let you in on – find what works for you and stick with it! I call this uniform dressing and it’s a life saver. Not all trends are going to flatter your body shape, fit your frame or flow with your personal style and that’s ok! You don’t have to try to reinvent the wheel everyday.

My uniform starts with denim. My closet is jam packed with more pairs of jeans than I really care to admit. The secret to keeping denim feeling fresh and a bit dressier is to swap in a skinny black pair like these from Old Navy! Black denim is the new version of a dress pant!! When I’m headed out to client meetings I like to rock an easy vibe, but I feel like the black denim keeps things from feeling too casual.

Layering is another obvious styling must – including layering denim on denim! My denim shirts have been on weekly rotation for months. I like to add extra interest by throwing a few more layers in there. Pop your sleeves and show a little stripe underneath. Toss on a vest cuz why the heck not?! A little cinch to the waist will keep you from resembling a potato sack.

Finally, use your accessories to put a personal spin on your basics. I like to rock a single statement piece of jewelry. My signature is my oversized watch, but perhaps you’re more of the statement necklace type. Shoes and bags are also my favorite way to change up a look. I plan to pair my new Freda Salvador Dotted Booties with everything this fall and my Clare Vivier tote is all business. I fit my laptop in that fabulous thing!

Did you know your shoe and bag choice is actually what sets your outfit’s tone? Not convinced? Well may I show how I took this look and easily spun it into two?!

Here’s another style secret that’s too good not to share – carry a pair of heels and a clutch with you to have an instant outfit transformation in your handbag! I went straight from a busy work day to being ready for an impromptu date night by simply swapping in a classic pair of black pumps, a two-toned clutch and adding a little sass with a leopard print belt! Completely refreshed look in under five minutes.

The best thing about denim basics is that they don’t need to break the bank. Find pieces that fit you well and feel good. My entire look came from Old Navy for less than $100. Total. I simply tapped my closet to layer on the accessories that let that day’s mood shine. I’d swap in a pointed-toe neon pump when I need a punch of energy or rock a baseball hat and my favorite tennies when running weekend errands. The possibilities with this classic foundation are pretty much endless.

Fabulous looks – zero stress – now that’s my style! Do you have a failsafe uniform you always go back to?
