I have a confession to make. I spent the majority of junior high in size 10, wide legged “skater” jeans, Stussy sneakers – a flannel tied around my jumbo t-shirt. There is even evidence, although I’m not telling you where! Well, for better or for worse, it appears that the 90s are back. From overalls to skorts – that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

Thanks to Dries van Noten and bevy of designer looks for fall, we’ve been seeing more ways to play with the grunge look gaining ground on the streetstyle blogs, a popular one being my 8th grade uniform–tying your shirt around your waist! Somehow, a long-sleeved plaid top or a striped, lightweight sweater–two more staples that every one should have in their closet–feels perfect all over again!

I haven’t tied my shirt around my waist in who knows how long, but I think this is the one 90’s trend that I’m most excited about giving another go. It’s easy! No buying necessary and it actually does have a flattering element. It adds a little extra bit of flair around the hip and if you keep it higher around your waist with your top tucked in, it can cinch you at just the right place!

Alright, who’s with me? Any takers willing to go a second round with some 90’s grunge?

  1. Sadly, I don’t think I ever gave up my plaid flannel shirts but perhaps that is just the country girl in me. I am excited about a 90’s return, I’ve noticed the grunge thing alot lately as well. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Wow, I’m going to be honest- I’m surprised “around the waist” is coming back in! It was seen as a joke or piss-take only a year ago! haha! It can look cool and casual though 🙂 I’m glad it’s socially and stylishly acceptable again so I don’t have to carry my jumper when it gets too hot haha x
