My biggest fear about becoming a mom has come true. I think I have lost my fashion mojo. I swore I wouldn’t give up my style to the demands of chasing an infant, but after being in the baby bubble, I’m officially a touch behind. Last I checked the ugly shoe trend was the birkenstock, but it appears everyone has moved on to something new – the flat mule.

Like the birkenstock, I think this look might be an acquired taste, but I’m still intrigued. They’re so ugly you kind of can’t look away. At first glance I’m certainly skeptical. Could I actually like these shoes? I’m pretty sure I rocked a flat mule sneaker circa 7th or 8th grade, but the more I look at them, the more I think this could be a fashion version of a mom-friendly shoe! Flat, comfortable and geek-girl chic. I know I’d feel more dressed up in this shoe than I do in my current go-to sneakers. The flat mule might just be enough to make me feel back in the style game.

Obviously I have some more catching up to do. Are there other fashion discoveries I’ve missed that you’re loving??

  1. As a person with hard-to-fit feet (bunions!), I love mules. If I buy shoes that don’t pinch, they usually flap at the heel anyway, so why not just make that a design feature?
To me, these offer the geek chic of loafers with the comfort of flipflops.
I think fashion is in a person’s DNA–or not. It might evolve, but it doesn’t go away.

  2. I’ve been contemplating this style. It’s a play on the Moroccan Babouche slipper. Everlane actually just released a similar style that is pretty chic. Need Supply also has a lovely (and affordable!) version. Or you can always search for some authentic slippers imported from Morocco. I’m a bit behind on “trends”, I’ve been honing in my personal style and much prefer timeless classics. In this case though, such a traditional style would fit into my wardrobe nicely!

  3. I used to like these (espc. during my pregnancy) but I find that the ball of my foot has to GRIP the show tightly so it doesn’t fall off. Then I end up with an angry callus. I know sometimes beauty is worth the pain but in this case? Maybe pass. Ha.
