Best of 2012: {Beauty How-To with Tom Ford}

From Chloe & Bailey: We love mommy no matter what she looks like, but she’s definitely a little scary first thing in the morning. Thankfully that nice man Tom Ford helped her out last year!

How often do you think about your makeup? If you’re like me, probably not that often. Makeup has long remained a mystery to me. I regularly fall prey to the latest fads, marketing campaigns or makeup counter sales pitches. I’m kinda a cosmetics lost soul.

That’s why I decided I needed some serious education in the art of makeup application. And who better to learn from than a source synonymous with beautiful things: Tom Ford! I was lucky enough to be invited to visit the Tom Ford Beauty boutique at the San Francisco Neiman Marcus to get a one-on-one tutorial with Tom’s North American lead for his beauty line. One of only a handful of Tom Ford beauty boutiques around the country, I didn’t realize I was walking into a luxe makeup how-to worthy of Tom Ford glam status!
The team sat me down and gave me a good talking to. They explained how Tom Ford doesn’t just approach makeup as a way to hide problems, but as another means of dressing up. It can be treated like a necessity but also can be approached as a light hearted luxury. I think I fall somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. I like to play with makeup, but I also use it for very specific purposes {hello under-eye circles I’m looking at you!}.
Perhaps more dramatic of a look, than what I gravitate toward normally, I loved the Tom Ford treatment. And the compliments I got throughout the rest of my day cemented it: putting a little extra effort into my makeup doesn’t go unnoticed!
While I might not go glam on a daily basis, here are six, simple must-do tips that I picked up:
1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. Supple skin is going to look better period so make your first investment here. Twenty years from now, your skin will thank you. I have to admit, the Tom Ford serum felt amazing on my face.
2. Good tools and great product make a big difference. The pigments and tones in Tom Ford makeup require only small amounts so it lasts longer. Their all natural brushes also deposited just the right amount of color, exactly where it was supposed to go. Not using fingers means the make-up lasts longer without getting contaminated. And they were super soft. I couldn’t stop petting them.
3. Try going more intense on the eye. Apply shadow all the way up toward your brow bone, not just to your crease. It’s a Tom Ford signature look but I liked the more striking effect.
4. Use an eyelash curler. It totally opens up a sleep-deprived eye. Long swipes of a mascara that both lengthens and thickens your lashes helps too. {no fake eyelashes needed}
5. Don’t neglect your eyebrows. Even just the softest swipe of an eyebrow pencil adds a definition that will make everyone ask, did you do something different today?
6. Bronzer and blush are your friend. Swipe a dash of bronzer on the angle from your ear toward the corner of your mouth and then blend in with your fingers. Next, smile and brush a pinky blush on the apples of your cheeks. The look wakes your face right up. I loved the Tom Ford Love Lust blush, but any dusty rose shade will do.

How about you luvies? Do you find makeup dazzling or daunting?

I’m thinking about making the foray into the beauty world more of a regular thing on the blog. I know I could certainly use the extra lessons. Do you have burning beauty questions you’d like answered? Tricks of the trade you’re dying to know? Let me know what you’d be interested in learning too!

For now, here’s to an extra-glamorous week,

Monday Work Wear {Get Girly with Kate Spade}

One of the highlights of my NYFW adventure was getting to go backstage at the Kate Spade presentation.  Seeing the sartorial mayhem in action was quite the thrill. Thankfully, I took along a top notch photographer to capture it all and I’m so excited to share the experience with you today!

The Kate Spade S/S 2013 collection put a more fashion forward, rockabilly twist on the line’s classically girly aesthetic. I have to say, I loved the bit of edge.

It was particularly fascinating to learn about the inspiration for the looks from the make-up and hair artists directly. Jouer national make-up stylist Neil Scibelli described his theme as 80′s chic with that rockabilly influencer (think early No Doubt).

The Jouer face focused on a clean and glowing base {I’m addicted to their luminizing tint!} and then a new mint-green/aqua-hued shadow to fill the lid, winging out the ends to provide extra drama.

Cheeks were emphasized with a pop of bubblegum pink blush and the lips were all a beautiful coral gloss topped with Jouer’s Essential Lip Enhancer for extra shine.

The hair was styled by Tommy Buckett for Garnier Fructis. He explained that since Kate Spade is the fun girl, he wanted the hair to match the bubbly collection. To achieve that feeling, he pulled it back into sleek ponies with a high-rolled bang up front. Definitely a high-styled look, but I appreciated it for the drama!

Besides getting to geek out over the getting ready stages of the show, it was also rather fun to do some celebrity sightings one the presentation began.

Brad Goreski was everywhere, filming his show it’s a Brad Brad World while styling up the girls. Yes, he is even more adorable in person. He showed me his custom made blue leather Louboutin loafers. Swoon.

Kate Spade Creative Director Deborah Lloyd was also making the rounds, greeting editors and famous friends including Lauren Conrad, who was looking lovely in the Garance Dore Rainey frock.

I also spied one of my favorite ladies and recent New York transplants, Matchbook Magazine founder Katie Armour, looking chic as ever.

But when it comes right down to it, the day was really all about the fashion. Everything from the shoes to the cheeky handbags to the exaggerated nails were all about making a serious statement.

Because that’s what personal style is really all about. Telling the world who you are and what you’re about, without saying a word.

Thankfully, you don’t have to wait until next spring to give a Kate Spade inspired look a try. I put together a Kate Spade look that would add a little girly flair to your fall wardrobe:

Monday Work Wear {Best Beauty Bets for Fall}

The last week of August. Five of the saddest words in the English language. I’m by no means ready to see summer go! Le sigh.

I love how this season brings out our more light, airy side and this applies to your beauty products just as much as your wardrobe. But just because the days are getting shorter now {boo hiss!}, that doesn’t mean we have to put all our favorite summer beauty finds away. I’m always a sucker for anything that does its job well and makes me feel a little prettier in the process!

While I am looking forward to the new fall fashion trends, I’m going to try to hold onto that warm glowy feeling with the bounty of beauty finds I’ve made over the past few months. I’ve got a nice collection that are going to stay on heavy rotation well into the new season.

For example, after picking up a bit too much sun in Hawaii, I’m happy to report that I consider myself like one of the 93% of participants in a blind survey who said they’d recommend Vaseline Total Moisture to others! It’s exactly what I needed to soothe my sensitive, over-sunned skin.

Below I gathered together some of my other favorite summer beauty finds that I would recommend just as highly.  Now that I’ve got an edited list of go-to’s, maybe I’ll finally get around to cleaning out the rest of my medicine cabinet so my top picks are front and center!
