Recipe: Super Simple Summer Salad on Apartment 34

One of the things I’ve missed most about living in a pandemic is going out to eat. I am a self-confessed food snob and there’s nothing I love more than a delicious meal served in a special restaurant. I also have so many friends in the restaurant industry and I hate to see them struggle.

At the same time, I do have a renewed relationship with my kitchen. Prior to the pandemic, cooking had really fallen off my to-do list. It had started to feel impossible. But with this new slow pace of life and nowhere else to go, cooking has become my renewed outlet. It’s funny, I’ve realized it’s like any habit. If you cook at home consistently it just becomes easier, quicker, and more fun. But cooking and food are also all about sharing. I’ve shared a lot of my cooking adventures during quarantine on Instagram – and you may have seen the recipe for the only cake I’m baking while we stay at home.

Today I have a deliciously easy summer salad recipe for you. You can throw it together in no time and it’s a perfect complement to virtually any other dish – grilled chicken or fish, burgers, pork chops, pasta. It’s light and fresh and delicious on hot summer nights (or foggy ones as is most typical in San Francisco this time of year). I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Sugar Snap Pea and Fava Salad with Buffalo Mozzarella
adapted from Cook Beautiful by Athena Calderone

Ingredients:
2C sugar snap peas, trimmed and blanched
1.5C fava beans shelled and blanched
Thinly sliced spring onion or shallot (I had a shallot on hand)
Fresh mint, roughly torn
Fresh basil, roughly torn
1 lemon, zest and juice
1.5T champagne or white wine vinegar
Olive Oil
1 Ball buffalo mozzarella
Flaky sea salt and pepper

Directions: Toss together the sugar snap peas, fava beans, mint, basil. Feel free to toss in any other greens you might like – arugula for spice, spinach for sweetness. Whisk together a quick dressing with thinly sliced shallot, champagne vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil and salt. Toss to coat the salad with dressing, tear mozzarella into chunks and scatter through. Sprinkle with lemon zest, a touch more flaky sea salt and pepper before serving.

If you like the look of this salad here’s a link to the cookbook it came from. In fact, here are all the cookbooks I’ve been returning to during Shelter In Place.

Leanne Ford might be known for her love of white spaces, but this home on the island of Menorca is giving her a run for her money. If you’re looking for inspiration to really pare down your life and give your magic easer a major workout, this monochromatic masterpiece is the home for you.

While white on white on white might not be the most practical color scheme for day-to-day family living, there are design lessons here that you can apply to any space, regardless of its color palette.

The first is the power of texture. Yes, this home is all about monochromatic design, but a variety of elements, from rough plaster walls to wood beamed ceilings, muted tile floors, and floor skimming linen window treatments all make this home feel very tactile. This isn’t a boring, sterile white box. Rather you want to run your hand along the wall or wander up the turning staircase to see where it might lead you.

The second less is the power of contrast. When you stick to a single white color palette, you can inject bold moments that really make an impact. Greenery around your built-in courtyard seating pops. A single dark wooden basket placed in a window is a scene stealer. One small piece of art or wall sconce grabs the eye. Each object takes on a much larger significance against the stark backdrop. It’s a wonderful reminder how less can truly be more.

While I cringe a bit thinking about dirty dog feet and sticky pre-schooler hands all over that built-in white sofa (trend spotting alert!), I am just sucked into the simplicity and earthiness of this place. We often think this type of aesthetic can only be enjoyed on vacation, but why? Who says you can’t recreate this feeling in your home – no island destination required. This home certainly feels like a wonderful place to escape from the stresses of daily life.

What do you think? Could you live in a monochromatic space like this every day?

Today we have extra tasty treat for you. My dear friend Maia is stopping by to take Tasty Tuesday to the next level. Maia is a bit of a renaissance woman. That’s a fancy way of saying she’s really good a lot of stuff. She’s a graphic designer, photographer, art director (of Rue Magazine no less), mother, founder of the fab online children’s shop Bitte (who is having a major sale this weekend FYI!), and also a great cook. Now that she bought her first house with an enviable yard, Maia has also become something of a amateur gardener too. Color me impressed.

I’m just thankful Maia is willing to share some of the fruits of her labor  – literally – in the form of amazing end-of-summer recipes inspired by what’s coming out of her garden right now. Even if you have to get your produce from the farmer’s market (like I do), fMaia is going to help us make the most of this seasonal bounty. Continue to scroll for three mouth-watering recipes.

apt34-zucchini-muffins

First up is a recipe for Savory Zucchini Muffins. It’s a twist on the usual sweet zucchini bread, that as anyone who grows zucchini knows, you get sick of pretty quick. The best part is that these can easily be frozen in a ziplock freezer bag and brought out months from now when you’ve recovered from your zucchini overdose. You could also easily sub out half the flour with whole wheat flour to make them a little heartier. These little babies are great for breakfasts on the go or packed into school lunches.

RECIPE: SAVORY ZUCCHINI MUFFINS

INGREDIENTS
Makes 12 Muffins
2 cups flour
2 tbsp sugar
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ tsp dried oregano
½ cup greek yogurt
½ cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup melted butter
½ + 2 tbsp cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 tsp chopped fresh basil
2-3 minced garlic cloves
1 cup shredded zucchini (drained of excess liquid)

Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, salt and oregano.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, yogurt and egg.
4. Stir the garlic into the melted butter.
5. Whisk the melted butter mixture into the other wet ingredients.
6. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mix, and gently combine. Don’t over mix the batter.
7. Stir in the shredded cheese (leaving out 2 tbsp for topping) shredded zucchini and chopped basil.
8. Spoon even amounts of mixture into a greased muffin tin and bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of the bread comes out clean.

apt34-peach-granola-parfait

I’ve already established how much I love peaches. As the season comes to a close (boohoo!), my friend Maia is back with the perfect to make good use of the final crop. roasted salsa recipe on apartment 34

While I’m a little sad to see summer go, there’s something about so comforting about fall. After the summer’s calling to constantly wander, spending an afternoon cozied up on the couch feels refreshing. And we all know couch-hanging must be accompanied by appropriate snacks! Thankfully, tomatoes and jalapeños are overflowing at the farmer’s market. This salsa is perfect for said couch hangs or better yet, late summer get togethers. And it’s so simple to make, you can whip up a batch with all the fresh and delicious produce available right now. I plan to make some big batches and freeze the extra for a little taste of summer in the middle of winter. That is if I can keep myself from just eating it all up right away! PS, this would go SO well with our homemade chilaquiles recipe.

RECIPE: SIMPLE ROASTED SALSA

INGREDIENTS
5-6 medium tomatoes
1 large onion
1-2 Jalapenos
2-3 Cloves of garlic (unpeeled)
Juice of 1 lime
Small bunch of cilantro
Salt
agave (optional)

Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
2. Wash and dry the tomatoes & jalapenos
3. Cut the tomatoes and onions in quarters
4. Place tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and garlic on a cookie sheet and bake in oven for 45-55 minutes. Until tomatoes are splitting and juicy and all veggies are a little dark and blistered on top.
5. Let cool
6. Add all veggies to a blender and blend together. Add lime juice, cilantro and salt to taste.
7. If you’re tomatoes weren’t very sweet you can add a smidgen of agave.

mid-summer moodboard on apartment 34

After a weekend of soaking up summer fun, friends and family, I feel like I’m emanating a warm, creamy glow. So rather than jump head first into Monday, I’d prefer to ease in, with dreams of golden sandy beaches, sun-washed destinations (like Puglia – seriously considering a trip next year!) and vacation vibes warming my bones. There’s something about a rustic pueblo look, a bit of Georgia O’Keefe in the desert mixed with seaside breeze that feels so delicious. While I’ve yet to finish my own house – though I’m trying desperately people – I promise – I now have a dream vacation home percolating in the back of my mind. Would you care to join in my daydream? The holiday may have come and gone (and good riddance – fireworks kept my 3yr old up and terrified for many an hour last night), but the bevvy of summer sales continues! While I’m currently doing my best to purge my closet (more on that to come very soon!), I never pass up a good deal on something for my house – and fourth of July sales are major when it comes to interior design. I’ve been making the rounds and there are some steals out there. Some items are as much as 70% off – some stores are doing 20% everything! I’m tellin’ ya, if you’ve wanted to do a little refresh, maybe new pillows for your couch, a new pendant light for the bathroom, update your bedding, now is the time!

With the 4th falling smack dab in the middle of the week this year, it’s not really the rollicking vacation we’re accustomed to. But if there’s one thing we will have enough time to do – it’s eat! I might be stuck in 60 degree weather and the fireworks may be shrouded in fog, but oh I will eat well. I’ve pulled together my favorite BBQ-friendly recipes to ensure your 4th of July menu is on lock. No judgements when I grill with with my Patagonia jacket on.

4th of July menu on apartment 34

Yes, burgers are a 4th of July mainstay but these babies offer a little more kick. They feature a spiced patty that’s cooled by a yummy tahini yogurt sauce. To whip these up you just need a few extra ingredients including baharat spice blend (that you can either buy or make yourself) and yogurt to make the topping. Click here for all the details.

4th of July menu on apartment 34

Since the 4th is dominated by all things unhealthy, a good salad helps balance things out. This one is filled with tasty pumpkin and sunflower seeds as well as avocado so it’s filling too. Perfect option for any vegetarians in your BBQ crew. The recipe is here.

4th of July menu on apartment 34

For drinks, why not shake things up with a white sparkling sangria. We named this one the Star Spangled Sangria so it seems very on theme. I highly recommend a dry white an dry sparkling wine to keep this baby from getting too sweet. Save that for dessert!

4th of July menu on apartment 34

For dessert I say more is more. Ice cream is kind of requirement. You can have some fun and make your own homemade ice cream sandwiches – or you can go really big and make your own strawberry ice cream. This is a fun project to do with the kids in the morning – you’ll teach them patience as they’ll have to wait until the evening to enjoy the fruits of their labor!

And then, for those in hot climates (you lucky ducks you) or for anyone who prefers lighter fare, these berry coconut milk popsicles are light, refreshing and seriously delicious. They’re also seriously guilt free. Sweetened with honey, they’re the perfect dessert for anyone who doesn’t want a ton of sugar. These are also another fun one to make ahead of time with the kiddos. The recipe is here!

Regardless of where you are, what you do and what you eat, I hope you have a fun (and safe!) Fourth!

It’s the 4th of July holiday week! Are you fully ready to get your summer on? This is that odd time of the season when it feels like summer will stretch on forever, but I know in the back of my mind that I’ll in fact blink, and it’ll be September. So this year I’m looking to make a little summer bucket list – before there’s only a week of August left.

DECLUTTER SOMETHING

10 things to try this summer on apartment 34

I know we usually focus on spring cleaning, but summer is the perfect time to tackle a major purge. Things are a little slower, the kids might be out of school, you might have relatives visiting. So take the opportunity to tackle a little something. It doesn’t have to be major. Maybe it’s just a dresser. Or the pantry. Or the utility closet that just collects…whatever is lying around. Make a point to fully clean out one thing and you’ll be amazed at how much lighter your spirit feels. And who knows, you may get on a roll and tackle more than you thought you ever could!

READ SOMETHING (that isn’t digital)

10 things to try this summer on apartment 34

Have you heard about Audible? It’s apparently what all the kids are doing while they run, wash dishes, or commute these day. And while I’m a big fan of maximizing time, I firmly believe there is something to be said for reading. Actual reading. Words on a page, held by your actual hands, that requires attention and focus. And I’m also a big fan of picking up a physical book. Something on your phone or tablet doesn’t count. Get immersed in something that isn’t backlit, even if it’s just the latest exposé in Vanity Fair (no shame in catching up on your magazines). I’ve let go of the massive summer reading list goal because #reallife but I would like to knock out at least one full book. I’m considering options off of this list, this list, this list or this list.

HIT THE BEACH (duh)

10 things to try this summer on apartment 34

While Bay Area beaches are not usually the lay out and bake kind (more like the bundle up and power walk until you can’t stand the wind anymore), but there’s still something about sticking your toes in the sand that screams summer. Then there’s always hopping a plane to Hawaii – which I’m also seriously considering.

HIT THE ROAD

10 things to try this summer on apartment 34

There’s something to be said for a good ole fashioned road trip. I’m lucky that places like wine country, Big Sur and the Sonoma Coast are in my backyard making short trips super easy. We’ve yet to brave a super long road trip with a toddler. Airplane travel doesn’t intimidate but hours upon hours in a car with a threenager who does not sleep….I’m not feeling so brave. Anyone done it and not only survived but had fun?! I’d love your tips.

MAKE FROSÉ

10 things to try this summer on apartment 34

Yes, I remember it was the thing last summer, but frosé is still just so good.

AND FIND YOUR SIGNATURE COCKTAIL

10 things to try this summer on apartment 34

Summer is primetime for impromptu guests, making it very handy to have an impromptu cocktail recipe up your sleeve. Find something that you truly love and that doesn’t include a lot of esoteric ingredients. Whip one up for a couple of nights until you feel confident you’ve got it down. Then you’ll never leave your friends feeling thirsty but you always won’t be bumbling around at the bar.

MAKE SOMETHING TASTY

10 things to try this summer on apartment 34

A spicy pesto with soft and creamy ricotta and a touch of salty prosciutto – this is the perfect 30-minute summer dinner.

THROW A PAR-TAY

10 things to try this summer on apartment 3410 things to try this summer on apartment 34

When throwing a summer party, yes, you can go all out and while it’s certainly rather fun, it is by no means required. This is the season for super easy entertaining. Nothing needs to be complicated. Little details can elevate the dining room table you only just cleared of this month’s mail. Throw down a simple linen table cloth, layer your plates and tie a cloth napkin in an off kilter knot. Break out a beautiful bowl for salad. Vintage wood boards make perfect serving platters. And while my yard isn’t really party ready, I’m certainly an advocate for bringing your gathering outside! Alicia’s yard is definitely goals.

SIMPLIFY YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE

I’ve fully embraced the five minute face and consider myself better for it.

What’s on your summer to-do list? Maybe a little camping? An outdoor movie night? Make your own ice cream? The days are long but the weeks are going to fly by friends. I hope you can enjoy every precious moment.

‘Tis the season to dream. Dream of white sandy beaches, dream of rosé, dream of cool summer breezes and the perfect setting from which to enjoy them. And I think I’ve officially found my dream setting, though sadly it belongs to someone else. But I can certainly drool over this seriously stunning and picture perfectly neutral home from afar (as well as add this to my future vacation house muse file).

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

This light and bright abode has all the things. The perfect amount of Scandi-inspired design. I know we’re supposed to move passed it and embrace color and terrazzo and print and pattern and drama and I just can’t! I can visit those space and appreciate those spaces but this is the home I want to live in. Monochromatic, calm, soothing, serene.

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

But it’s certainly not boring. Do you see those beams on the ceiling (added during renovations by the design genius behind this project, Jessica Helgerson Interior Design). Danish design classics like the PP130 Circle Chair and Sibast No. 8 chairs in the dining room mix with pieces from leading modern design houses and take pride of place. Apparatus Studio trapeze sconces dots many a wall and hangs in the dining room. Swoon. There is texture, there is warmth and there is interest through out this home thanks to a mix of wood tones, painted wood, marble, brass and handmade tile. Rustic leathers, linen and chunky knits soften the look. Each room feels inviting and comfortable, no color required.

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

That dining room table and matching benches are particularly special. Is anyone else catching the brass detail on the cross bars?

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

The all-white kitchen is anything but boring thanks to the warm wood island, brass hardware, subway tile wall and beamed ceilings. Even though it’s a renovation – this was once a covered porch that was converted into usable indoor space – it feels as if the kitchen was just always this way.

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

Could I get away with a single shelf of storage in the kitchen…well maybe in a vacation house I could…taking notes.

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

Custom storage in the entry is so good.

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

As is built in seating. I couldn’t find a way to fit it into our house, but I think a built in section will be a requirement in my future dream vacation house. The more times I type my dream vacation house the more likely it is to actually happen, right?!

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

A staircase that just seems to float in mid-air? Don’t mind if I do.

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

Do I spy shiplap done in an exceeding modern way? The brass sconce and ceiling lights, the clean lined coffee tables, and built in seating keeps this room from going too country. Instead it takes on a modern, beachy feel. I’m certainly feelin’ it.

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

A bedroom with all the hygge vibes for the win. Also note that pendant light is from Ikea. Proof positive that you can definitely go with a high low mix. I’m also into that circle effect behind the bed. It’s an easy way to create the feeling of a massive headboard and some fun visual interest (how I applied a similar idea in my son’s room is here).

This lovely space is proof that you don’t need to get overly fancy in the bathroom. Also I really wish I knew the source for that awesome sconce. And I wishing I’d tiled my backsplash. Maybe it’s not too late…

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

Only thing I’m not sure I’m loving is the tree mural in this guest bedroom. A little too literal for my taste. Are you into it?

neutral dream escape in the hamptons on apartment 34

But I definitely need an ivy covered pergola and outdoor dining area in my future. Wait, I have that at least for the next 6 days! Don’t forget to check in on Instagram as I’ll be giving sneak peeks of my current wine country stay-cation situation. It’s not as totally perfect as this house, but I’ll take it!

After of a dose of the Texas heat in Austin last week (are you following all my recaps on Instagram Stories yet??), all I can think about is outdoor dining. Those balmy evenings, perfect for endless late-night hangs and glasses of rosé, are really is the best thing about the summer months. I don’t think I’ve ever met an outdoor dining situation that I didn’t like. As soon as I finally finish my the inside of my house, I’m going to be starting on our yard, so I figure it’s never too soon to start banking inspiration.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

I’m drooling over this neutral outdoor dining area. That simple bar area is the perfect solution for an outdoor “kitchen” that doesn’t require a major construction project. The mix of materials, rustic wood, stainless steel, and wicker. But the black chairs, lanterns and wall sconce add a modern edge.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

If you love a boho vibe, there’s no need for an outdoor dining set! Simply throw some vintage rugs and poufs on the ground. A bit of plywood can serve as your table. A simple bolt of cloth makes a great runner and your set of white dishes look fresh and bright with a beautiful dip-dyed napkin. While you probably wouldn’t leave this set up in your yard all summer long, it’s the perfect solution for a beautiful dinner party.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

A pergola is a perfect way to demarcate a dining area in your yard. They offer shade, they offer a spot to hang cafe lights or even install an outdoor fan.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

Who says you have to hop a plane to a far-flung destination to feel like you’re on vacation. A reclaimed wood table and benches, woven mats and vintage wicker chairs will immediately give you the island vibe.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

The top of your table not so purdy? No problem! Just lay down a layer of butcher paper and you’ve got a gorgeous neutral background for your tablescape.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

Bench seating is a great way to pack a lot of guests around your outdoor dining table, but I love the idea of spicing up the look with a crazy cool vintage peacock chair.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

I’m really digging the look of the desert inspired yard. A simple white table is paired with stools (the ones above are actually concrete side tables – virtually indestructible – & you can get them here) for an individual seating place for each guest. A woven end chair softens the look (one like this would work well). The table is a high-gloss white wood making it pop against the sand and also makes it very easy to wipe down!

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

While outdoor dining is usually associated with laid back, casual affairs, it’s pretty easy to set a dramatic scene. Simply dot your table with tapered candles and some beautiful stemware and your yard will feel dressed up in no time.

10 outdoor dining ideas on apartment 34

Not everyone gets to enjoy a super toasty summer evening every night. That’s why I love the layers on this outdoor dining table. The sheepskin-covered benches offer a spot for guests to warm their bums. The linen tablecloth and runner add a cozier texture to the table and the throw pillows warm up that gorgeous vintage cane chair. While still casual and easy, this set up also feels special.

And who says you have to actually set an outdoor dining table. Why not just put a giant cheese board down the middle. Your guests can grab and nosh as they please. A self-serve drink station is also never a bad idea. A gorgeous stone-topped outdoor dining table makes it easy to create a beautiful setup. A simple wipe with a damp cloth and you have all the decorating you need.

What say you? Does one outdoor dining style speak to you more than another. It’s usually too cold in San Francisco to eat outside in the evenings but we head to wine country next week and I’m planning to pack some pretties to set a gorgeous table – just because I can!
