Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s time. Time to put down the cookies, step away from the eggnog and say no to the second or third helping.

As clichéd as it might be, today is your chance to put one new year’s resolution in place and make a clean break. There’s no better way to do it than with a juice cleanse.

Disclaimer 1: I am a bit of a juice cleanse addict. I’ve tried quite a few over the years and so this December I took the challenge of cleansing not just once, but twice {all the better to prepare for our trip to Mexico!}

Disclaimer 2: I am spoiled by living in San Francisco. With fresh produce at our fingertips and a love of healthy eating embedded in the culture, I had a amazing juice cleanse options right at my fingertips. Local companies can deliver fresh-made juice to my door daily. But take heart – they can be shipped!

During two different weeks I embarked on two, three-day cleanses, one by Living Green Juices and one by Juice Shop and I loved them. Both.

Disclaimer 3: I love green juice. I know, I’m weird.

As a bit of health food fanatic, it’s not a large stretch for me to conceive of consuming nothing but green, veggie heavy juices for three days. I enjoy them. But I can also attest that both Living Greens and Juice Shop make the experience much easier for the cleansing novice by actually making their juices delicious.

While they might not fully qualify as “sweet,” you don’t feel like you’re chugging a jug of fresh cut grass. Here were the highlights from each experience.

Juice Shop
~ I’m officially addicted to their almond milk. It was like a delicious dessert each day.
~ Supplemental colon and liver cleanse shots accompanied each day’s juice delivery. While less tasty, a quick down the hatch gulp and I felt like I was doing something especially good for my system.
~ The six juices a day kept me feeling satisfied and I looked forward to the next serving.

Living Greens Juice
~ Each day’s juices were delivered to my door every morning {hello early wake up call!}
~ The day’s allotment included two teas and a broth you heated {excellent options for winter cleanses as it helps stave off the worst of the juice cleanse side effects – being freezing cold!}
~ The coconut smoothie added a nice protein boost to keep the calories and my energy up

Verdict. I’d like to have a Juice Shop Beta Green and a Living Greens Immune Rocket in my fridge at all times.

If consuming nothing but fresh juice for three days still sounds a bit too extreme for you, don’t consider yourself left out. I highly recommend adding fresh juice to you daily regime as a meal supplement. Especially when you stick to green/veggie {rather than fruit-focused} juices, you’re going to pack a nutritional, not caloric punch.

And who doesn’t want to get a dose of fresh vitamins and minerals that benefit everything from your liver to you hair in one quick hit?

So start the new year with a new attitude. Go out of your comfort zone a bit. Commit yourself to going clean in 2013!

Sip back and enjoy,

What do you think?

  1. I’m a big cleanser too. I juiced last month before Spain and I have to admit, I’m really addicted! I mostly do Blue Print Cleanse. I’d love to try those others but I don’t know if we get them here in NY. The first thing I did this morning was juice my own green juice! Felt great 🙂

  2. Every year I try to make a resolution to eat healthy but haven’t been able to stick with it yet, hopefully this year is different.

  3. Hi Erin,

    Love your website and your style!

    Eating healthy is a great goal for the new year but cleanses are a big myth in the health industry. The truth is they aren’t as healthy as everyone thinks. Here are a couple of links to learn more:

    Thanks for all the design inspiration and happy new year!

  4. I am a fellow Juice Addict, first converted by The Juice Shop and amazing personalities that create them of Charlie, Ben and Lina! Unfortunately I live in the U.K. now but have learned to juice on my own, although I miss the smiling faces of Charlie, Ben and Lina! xox Mary
