Since Mondays are the week’s cruel joke on us all, I thought I’d offer you a little getaway today, if only via photos. Spending a week in Sayulita was such a buoy to my spirit, I’m hoping it could be one for yours as well! I’m thrilled to have our trip kick off a new 2013 travel series we’re calling, Gotta Get Away.

The bit of tropical paradise is primarily a surf town. Situated on the shore of the Pacific Ocean, just north of Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita teems with vibrant color, delicious food and the occasional drum circle to swivel your hips to as you walk around the town square. We rented a house up in the hills, overlooking the ocean. It was like our own little oasis hidden among the palms.

I love the details in Mexian architecture, especially the tiles and wrought iron work.

The square is also where you find the famed “Coco-Banana.” As inappropriate as it looks, it really was quite delicious!

The beaches of Sayulita, and most neighboring towns, are a sea of umbrellas; vendors of every shape and size are lined up side by side – you won’t go hungry, cold, thirsty or unaccessorized. I’ll admit I couldn’t resist bringing home a sarong, or three.

It’s really not hard to love life when you spend your day here.

We saw lots of local wildlife, including flocks of exceptionally friendly pelicans and whales that seemed to have no issue with humans whatsoever!

Yeah, that’s right, we were that close to humpback whales. In a pretty tiny boat. Needless to say I’m still awestruck.

This is where we ate the most amazing tacos de camaron I’ve ever had in my life. Repeatedly. Ok, daily. I think I’m made of tortillas now!

So if you’re looking for a place to rest your head, feet or heart, I couldn’t recommend Sayulita enough. I’m already counting down to when we might return!

Need more convincing? I’ll be sharing a few other Sayulita discoveries throughout the week. As we face the dog days of winter, I just can’t resist holding onto the memory of warmth for as long as possible. Hope you don’t mind my sharing it with you.

For now, check out more of our trip on Instagram right here.

Here’s to a dreamy week,

phtotography by yours truly

  10. Oh my..you must all be newcomers to this town !
Been coming here for many years, since 2007..when it was actually an honest to goodness very laid back beach town with dirt roads everywhere, no internet, a few private telephones and real phone booths scattered about town.
Progress has changed this little town into a money-grubbing beach town packed with new-wave yuppies, left-over dreadlocked hippies, an overabundance of jewelry shops, way too many surrf shops and prices similar to what I pay at home in Seattle, WA USA.
The worst part of all though..is the gazillion “illegal” beach chairs and umbrellas that line the beach from the center of town all the way to the river. If you’ve been there..you know from what I speak. I don’t mind progress..or even newcomers enjoying a cute town..but the illegal overtaking of a public beach by money grubbing entrepeneurs – and no municipal city or government control is terrible !
The pizza restaurants use thin crust and they all are runny and soggy.
The only thing left worth savoring are the street tacos.
I could go on and on..but I’ll just find some smaller beach towns and go there instead.
Adios Sayulita…one day you might just get too big for your own britches !
