While I’m incredibly grateful for what our new house has given me (a formal dining room, a pantry and a laundry room among others), one thing I do not have is a traditional utility room. You know the type of space I’m talking about. It could include laundry, but it’s also a place to ditch dirty boots, wash off grubby hands or towel down the dog after a run on the beach. With seemingly never-ending rains pelting Northern California of late, I’m more wistful than ever. Especially when there’s inspiration like this picture perfect utility room in the world.

Just because a space is designed for function, doesn’t mean it can’t also be beautiful. This room is the perfect example. No attention to design detail was spared. First off – nothing in here is utilitarian. Just because you need a space to do some hard work doesn’t mean you can’t put in fixtures with thoughtful design. An apron front sink and oversized faucet in black immediately add serious style.

Another of my favorite things about this room? It isn’t white! When you think you utility space, you often think of stark white, but this room is toned down with warm neutrals, chic gray cabinetry and tons of wood tones, making it feel both inviting and seriously chic.

The space also feels crisp and architectural. That’s thanks to its strong linear architectural accents. Ceiling beams, subway tile with black grout, strategic use of open shelving and extra-long hardware all offer strong lines throughout the room. It feels as if the space is a set of puzzle pieces assembled perfectly.

While it might be a little tough to get this room dirty the first one or two times – it’s just that pretty – this design is proof positive that you came make a hardworking space look damn good too. Here’s how you can get the look!

  1. Beautiful! I would love to do my step moms kitchen remodel in this palette. What color are the cabinets and what brand is the tile plank floor?

  2. Such a calm feeling for a room that could get pretty hectic. Really like it.. thanks
