This installment of Designer Files is just creamy goodness. If you’re looking for an example of a style-focused kitchen that is as functional as it stunning – cuz I know you just googled exactly that – well look no further. You’re going to want to move into this space immediately. I know I did.

This modern eat-in kitchen / family room is picture perfect (obviously!). I love every single choice – from the color palette to the hardware, the fixtures to the furniture. It’s comfortable cozy, functional and overflowing with style. The layers, luscious textures and use of mixed materials dotted throughout the space make you want to sink right into the creamy-white goodness.

The kitchen’s island is a true thing of beauty. You would have easily had me with the waterfall countertops but those those simple pendants by Workstead are simply chic.

I’m also in love with that custom hood. It’s a refreshing alternative to the typical stainless steel. (I have a thing for eye-catching hoods).

I’ve been obsessed with koushi pendants since our trip to Australia a couple of years back. Their rustic texture has a bit of beachy vibe and feels perfect over the casual kitchen table. Digging the built-in bench too.

But the family room’s seating area is a real thing of beauty. It mixes periods and styles seamlessly. I thought I was over the weaving trend until I saw that massive piece over the couch. Everything in here feels comfortable but selected with such a discerning eye for design. #lifegoals

This kitchen is actually part of the amazingness that is Decorist founder Gretchen Hansen’s San Francisco home and was digitally designed by LA based firm 30 Collins. I was lucky enough to get to walk through this space in person and can attest, these gorgeous photos don’t even do it justice. And I’ve been day-dreaming about those vintage easy chairs ever since. They’d look so lovely in our house. I wonder if Gretchen might ever want to let them go…

A killer lighting situation can complete the look of a space—it’s like the cherry on top of a sundae…the icing on the cake…the cheese on the pizza? Alas, we digress. What we’re trying to get at is that a good light can define a space and serve to add a little bit more dimension to the feel of a room. Not to mention, extra mood lighting is always welcomed, especially when it comes to enhancing the Instagramability of our meals {#priorities}.

If you’re looking for something more dramatic than a basic ceiling light, but less showy than a chandelier, pendant lights are the way to go. The great thing about them is that they’re super versatile—you can hang them over a elegant dining table or use them to create a cozy reading nook. In our favorite metallic hue these guys offer just the right amount of interest for any decor situation!

It’s hard to go wrong with these pretty pendants—you can go singular and bold or hang multiple smaller options to create the lighting that best fits your needs. Often times, you just need that one glitzy piece to add that touch of glam to a space. We’ve scoured the web and created our own collection of gold pendant light faves!

We love the perforated look of #4. We’ll take two to hang over a long dining table, please! Which would you choose?

As you may have noticed, updates about the ongoing remodel of our San Francisco Victorian have been rather few and far between these days. I’ve come to learn remodels are like molasses – they move at a pace you cannot control! And while progress is in fact being made, there’s not a lot of excitement related to rough-in plumbing, insulation or rewiring. I am getting super excited to share our plans as the designs are coming together! But in the meantime I thought it’d be fun to play what-if with some of my favorite designers. What if they had their hands on this house and could do whatever they wanted! I knew they’d have as much fun dreaming  of what could be done with the space as I have. So for the next few weeks you’re going to be treated so some major design inspiration from a bevy of design studs! I’m thrilled my dear friend and interior stylist extraordinaire Kirsten Grove is kicking things off with some serious kitchen inspiration!

To jog your memory, when it comes to the kitchen we’re basically starting from scratch because this is the house’s current “kitchen”:

This is the floor plan for our new kitchen:

While not a terribly big space, we hope to maximize storage with a separate pantry {woot!}. I’ve toyed with the idea of a kitchen island too. And I’m still debating what the cabinets should look like. And lighting?? Oh the lighting dilemmas. I am excited the kitchen will be directly connected to our living room via a breakfast bar. Obviously, it’s a very blank slate at the moment as we’re still in our demolition phase, so I’m excited to see what Kirsten thinks we might do with this design!

Kirsten’s Designer Take: Hi everyone! My name is Kirsten Grove and I am an interior Stylist/Blogger from Boise Idaho. I am a huge fan of Apartment 34 and I think the world of Erin and the team! She definitely has her work cut out for her with this renovation. But it’s something that I know she will successfully complete.

We all know that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Whether we cook or not, we all want the perfect kitchen. Of course they are the biggest money takers, but it’s well worth it at the end.

styling-2

I have always been a fan of modern, minimal kitchens. Especially in older homes. The juxtaposition is always stunning! Right now cabinet slabs are on point. No molding, no panels. Just clean slabs. Paired with hardware or just kept plain, these doors are simple yet beautiful.

Here’s a kitchen with simple hardware that doesn’t take away from the doors. I also love the style of hood that mirrors the cabinets. It’s a nice, clean look. This same thing can be assigned with the refrigerator.

Another trend is two toned cabinets. Above we have a dark paint on the top and natural wood on the bottom. You could also do one color on top and another color on the bottom. It breaks the kitchen up and adds stylish personality!

Here’s another example of two-toned cabinets. This kitchen also has another favorite trend of mine. Square tiles! It’s a refreshing change from the classic subway tiles. White grout keeps it more traditional while dark grout keeps it modern.

Kitchens can be a lot of fun to design! Good luck, Erin! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I love that Kirsten named a few of my favorite kitchen trends – and a couple that just might make their way into my final kitchen design. But you’ll have to wait a little longer before I can reveal all of that. For now, follow more of Kirsten’s design savviness on her blog, Simply Grove!

Red is one of those colors you either love or you hate. The right type of fiery personality struts it with confidence or splashes it about in their home decor. That said, we are not typcially that person {save a good red lipstick!}. But with a tinge of orange and a hint of rust, a fresh poppy hue has us rethinking our refusal to experiment with red really hard. It’s jolting without being offensive to the eyes and it’s subtle undertones make it surprisingly sophisticated. Best part is, you just need a pop of it!

What do you red-haters say? Good, right? Those shiny, lacquered cabinets really get us going {in a good way!} and those bold strokes in the abstract painting just bring it home. We also can never say no to a blood orange anything and juju hats in that same audacious color perfectly offset a super neutral room.

We have to say poppy may have just become our new bold obsession!

Unless you’ve been living under an online rock, you’re probably very familiar with the amazingness that is Sarah Sherman Samuel. Not only is she the founder of the {gorgeous!} inspirational blog, Smitten Studio, she also has a enviable eye for design {have you seen her house AND her cabin on Instagram?! Swoon} and is the owner and creative director behind her decor brand, A Sunny Afternoon. Known for her super chic cutting boards and printed napkins, anything Sarah touches is gold which is why, when we were thinking of something kitchen related for our Holiday Boutique, she immediately sprang to mind!

We worked with Sarah to create a custom two-toned  board out of a gorgeous maple and walnut – just for us! When we said we wanted a fun shape with a simple and timeless detail we had no idea just how spot on she was going to nail this one. We’re obsessed with the unique octagonal design and the color blocked effect. It looks gorgeous styled on a shelf next to your display of pretties; ceramics collection, candlesticks or plates would all be lovely. It will also add an extra oomph of design flare to your next dinner party- place your favorite cheese on it and bam, you’ve made a statement.

And the cutest part? Sarah works with her dad on these- sawing, sanding and staining each by hand. You can feel the love in each board, making it the THE gift for someone you adore this holiday season.

Ok, you really don’t have to buy this serving board for the cute cook in your life. You can buy it for yourself {shhh! we won’t tell anybody. we did it too!}. We’re certain, kitchen lover or not, if you at all enjoy the pretty things in life, you’ll die over this limited edition {there’s only 25!!} board. It’s the perfect addition to your collection of items that will last you a lifetime!

Most home owners can probably attest to falling victim to this dark hole: dreaming of all the things you can’t afford in your new house- like, universally-coveted marble countertops! Oh, what to give to be able to just trot down to the marble yard, point to the vein-iest Carrara slab they have and say, “that one!”…*wakes up from dream.* While highly impractical dream kitchen will have to wait, luckily there are some marvelous marble accessories to keep one satiated…at least, until you scroll through Pinterest and find yourself staring at inspiration that looks like THIS. Oy.

While marble far as the eye can see might be out of the budget, this marble-esque Clare V. Oversize Metallic Clutch certainly isn’t! Let’s talk about how amazing this super fab marble-topped side table is and let’s talk about the fact that it is ON SALE. Also, if you can’t buy the real thing, we say, faux it with these gorgeously crafted ceramic serving boards. And who else is ob-sessed with this cute gold-plated bar set, atop it’s own adorable marble slab?! Yes, please.

Even if you can’t cover your house in wall-to-wall Carrara, at least you can marvel at a little mable in your life!

We recently featured Bar and Co., a haven in Helsinki where good design and good cocktails collide. Designed by our of-the-moment favorite interior designer, Joanna Laajisto, we just can not get enough of her entire portfolio, but when we came across her personal home tour, we found our true love: the minimal, yet warm and livable design!

Untitled-5joanna laajisto kitchenjoanna-laajisto-living-roomjoanna laajisto home

Although the base of the color palette is a crisp white, the layers of black, cream and pale pinks really make this a cozy and inviting space. I mean, I want to roll around on that Moroccan rug {why does the totally over-exposed trend feel fresh in that room?}

Balancing crisp and modern with soft, comfortable pieces can be so tricky to get right, but layering texture, color and style is something that Joanna knows best. After taking serious notes from our interview with this design extraordinaire, we put our learnings to the test. If you want to live in an understated yet perfect space like Joanna’s, decorate with this!

Not only are the above options a great place to start when recreating this design, they’re also so affordable! I’m adamant about finding a spot for a cool clamp light in the new office design and that three tiered pendant could look amazing over the team desk. So many good options! We’ve been dying over anything black and white these days. Could you tell?!

If you’re obsessed with the breakdown of spaces and color palettes, we write these types of posts monthly over at 55 Downing Street- check them out here!
