There’s nothing like a house full of guests to make you want to get your sh** together! I’m frantically finishing off space after space in our house (guest room – check) before the holidays hit in full force. Even rooms that are “complete” can always use some seasonal upgrades. Case in point, our guest bath. It doubles as my son’s bath, which means it’s constantly a hot mess in there. But I decided I shouldn’t force my family to wade through a tub full of toys every day. Thankfully, just a few fixes helped transform my guest bathroom from babes in toyland…

To a gorgeous grownup retreat…

Step one is rather obvious – a serious bath toy purge. Thank goodness for large vanities and linen closets. After the clean up, creating a welcoming bathroom was simply in the details. I wanted to offer a soothing, calming space – the holidays are stressful enough as it is!

I started with the most important thing – brand new bath towels from my friends at Parachute (makers of my fave bed linens you might have seen here). Parachute reached out about showing off their new bath line at the perfect time. Because there’s nothing worse than staying somewhere with bad towels. You don’t want anything too thin or scratchy. Nothing that leaves you dripping wet no matter how many times you towel off. You have to have something super soft and super absorbent and the Parachute bath collection certainly fits the bill. I mixed and matched textures combing their classic towels in gray with the waffle weave in white and topped off the look with their classic white looped bathmat. It feels so nice and plush underfoot.

To achieve the desired soothing vibe, I stuck to a neutral palette with the rest of my accessories. This bathroom is a beautiful bright white, but natural materials and lots of texture; ceramics, bristle brushes, wood accents and brass hardware keep it from feeling stark. A few touches of darker details like a marble tray and vintage stool also add a graphic punch. It’s a good idea to have extra necessities at arms reach, so I added wooden baskets under the vanity for more towels and of course, toilet paper.

Since we’re lucky enough to have a nice large tub, I wanted to encourage our house guests to actually make use of it. A bath tray filled with accoutrements certainly make it hard to resist a good soak. The bathroom counter got cleared of its clutter, leaving space for a kickass circular vase that mimics the round mirror, a cute scrub brush and a vintage print. I’m a big fan of art in the bathroom (evidenced here). Parachute is also carrying robes and slippers which are a super luxe treat for guests. Because who ever travels with a robe!? All in all, I think I like my guest bath better than my master now! What do you think?

If you caught last week’s No Makeup Home Tour, then you may have spied some major sneak peeks of my yet-to-be-finished living room. I’m embarrassed to say that my living room has sat stagnant since we moved into our house nearly 18-months ago. There are a multitude of reasons for that; prioritizing this room and this room and this room, budgetary limits (we’re renovating a 150-year-old house my friends – she’s got a lot of problems) and a bit of design paralysis are all contributing factors. But I won’t take all the blame! That’s primarily because we’ve also been waiting to complete the fireplace that is the main focal point of the living room space. But now, with the holidays and the arrival of many house guests looming, I’m in a race against the clock to get this room done. So I thought I ought to let you in on a little of my planning!

Here’s the floorplan for our living room layout.

apartment 34 living room design

The room opens onto the dining room to the south via two ah-mazing french doors (you can see here). It also is open to our kitchen (after the removal of some major walls) to the north. The door to the right opens onto our media room (which you may have spied here). The challenge is the living room’s long, relatively narrow rectangular shape. The ceilings also happen to be 12ft tall – I know, rough life – but it makes finding proper proportions very tough. We’ve finally landed on unifying the space with a large 10×14 rug – the final selection is in the works -, designing a custom sectional (more on that to come soon!), nesting three round coffee tables in front of the soon to be built fireplace and adding a lounge chair to the corner to create a little reading nook in the far corner. Phew. All that to get completed before my family descends for Thanksgiving. No stress.

I thought you might like seeing some of my inspiration images for the space.

This is our inspiration for the sectional. This being our living room, I want it to feel more formal than the TV room, but only slightly. I live in the birthplace of California casual living after all.

apartment 34 living room design

This is the primary inspiration for my fireplace design. Both the hearth and gas insert surround will be black and arched like you see above. The mantle will be shaped something like what you see above but in a travertine instead of marble. As you may recall from this post, bookshelves sit to the left which will be my primary place to house treasures and work on my never-ending quest for the perfect shelfie.

apartment 34 living room design

I also want to create a bit of an undone vibe, with singular accents and accessories that stand out like they were in a place of honor. We’ll see if I can succeed in keeping piles of legos at bay.

apartment 34 living room design

But where I find myself really struggling is the hunt for a good side chair. In the thousands upon thousands that are out there, it’s actually quite surprising how difficult it is to unearth a good one. Do I want something modern, something cozy, something unique or something vintage. I don’t want to fall into the trap of anything too trendy as I am not going to be to replace any furniture for quite a long time or the husband might kill me. But since it’s going to hold court in a corner all its own, I’d like the chair I pick to be a real conversation starter. You can just google that right?? Right. The struggle is real my friends, the struggle is real.

apartment 34 living room designapartment 34 living room designliving room design on apartment 34

So I’ve begun to round up some of of the best side chair options I’ve spied thus far. They range from the rattan trend (but can I convince myself it’d feel timeless in five years) to a bit art deco, to modern classics. I’d love to know which look you like best! Mama needs some advice.

Have you ever scrolled through social media looking for inspiration and come away feeling less than great? You’re not alone. Thanks to Instagram (let’s just call a spade a spade), we’ve been programmed to think we can only share the perfect. Even when divulging something deeply personal, a self-effacing caption must be accompanied by an eye-popping pic. Now, there have been a few movements to lift the veil here and there. #IWokeUpLikeThis and #NoMakeup have offered a nod to more realism in the land of social media. But that sentiment is particularly rare in the world of interiors. When it comes to our homes, it seems only the picture perfect need apply. And while the intention might be to offer inspiration through beauty, the edited version of life can leave you feeling not so great about your own.

So when Kyla, of House of Hipsters, suggested a group of  bloggers (myself included obvi) offer peeks inside our homes sans props, sans professional photography, sans hours of styling or waiting for the perfect light, I thought – yeah, let’s do it! Even though I pride myself on offering you aspiration and inspiration on the daily, I thought you ought to know that I’m often scrambling to live up to my own inspirational standard. Now, when Kyla suggested we share this less than perfect home tour she said, “offer your usual pretty pictures, just maybe with a toy on the floor or a less than perfectly made bed.” Well, I’m taking things a step further. Welcome to the biggest, dirtiest, most revealing sneak peek of my house to date.

You haven’t seen a renovation update around here in quite some time, because as it turns out I’m a regular person! I don’t have unlimited funds, nor a magic wand. I’m juggling work and kids (and ideally friends and family and working out and a marriage but some of those things typically fall by the wayside). And renovating and decorating your dream home is actually really difficult. So while I wish my house looked like this or this or this all the time, it most often looks like what you see above and below. A constant work in progress. For example, my living room (above) continues to sit in a holding pattern as I design my dream fireplaces, deal with odd room dimensions and hold out to be able to afford my dream light fixture, among other things.

no makeup home tour on apartment 34

spoiler alert – we created an open concept living room and kitchen which I love. You can see everything, which I also love, including all the stuff I wish I could hide, which I hate. You know, usual things you see in a house like your vacuum filter on your kitchen counter; a balloon left over from a birthday party that happened six months ago; a massive pile of who knows what on the dining room table and toddler toys virtually everywhere.

the occasional moment of zen

when the toddler toys break free from their confines. My fantasy version of our media room is here. I usually achieve that version for about an hour before going to bed on Sunday nights.

So there you have it. While I attempt to have my sh*** together everyday, I often fall short. But I will not beat myself up about it and neither should you. Because our homes are not still lives. They don’t come with a prepackaged set of filters. While I love when I achieve the picture perfect moment, it’s like trying to hold onto air. It just slips through your fingers. Turns out, life happens in the mess.

Now that the season has turned, have you started looking for ways to update your house for fall?! I thought so (don’t worry, me too). Starting with a bookshelf is a no brainer. They’re the perfect place to express your personality – and you can continually switch them up depending on your mood – all in really affordable ways. But perfecting them does take a little time. Maybe you’re working to build a library or perhaps you’re compiling a collection of curated objects. A couple of weeks ago I partnered with Overstock to share how you can amp up your bookcase (and many other parts of your house) with plants, but what about everything else you need to really make your shelves stand out? Keep scrolling for a few styling tips and you’ll have the perfect #shelfie in no time.

how to style the perfect shelfie on Apartment 34

Find Your Vibe. Do you love tons of color? Do you gravitate toward an eclectic look? Are you a minimalist?  To keep you shelfie in check, figure out your style and then commit to it 100%. I went for a light, bright and paired back look above. I was in an open and airy mood all summer, but check out my inspiration for a more layered look in a black color palette below. I’m totally feeling this approach for fall.

Layer It Up. To give your shelves depth and texture, it’s time to layer. Trays, stacks of books or a piece of leaning art serve as a good base. From there, you can add in a candle holder, a decorative bowl, a sculpture, a little lamp – and of course a houseplant or two. You want your eye to travel both back and forth and up and down as you move from shelf to shelf.

Leave Room to Breathe. To keep a shelfie from feeling overstuffed, group objects together in threes. Also vary the heights of the items in your grouping. You want each piece to speak to one another in some way, but if they’re all the same height they won’t stand out. And remember to leave a little white space. That way, people will admire your handiwork rather than wonder if you’re a hoarder.

While the above are good shelfie guidelines, I’m the first to admit there are no hard and fast rules. Simply keep your eye out for things you truly love and you’re already halfway there. Below are a dozen pieces from Overstock I’d certainly love to add to my shelves this season!

If you frequent Apt34 from time to time, you may have seen that I’ve been working on a toddler room refresh for my two and a half year old. Rather than get overwhelmed by trying to redesign the entire space at once, I decided to tackle it area by area. First up: the closet. Did you see the before I shared a few weeks back? The closet was just a hot mess and a missed opportunity to capitalize on very usable space. But now the makeover is complete and today you get to see the after! I can’t wait to hear what you think.

a creative toddler room update on apartment 34

It did take a bit of elbow grease to get the closet looking this spiffy. First there was the getting rid of the things (yes, I forced myself to part with stacks of swaddle blankets and tiny baby outfits I’d been holding onto with a vice grip). Then there was the cleaning of the things. Funny how grungy a space gets when you don’t touch it for months on end!

Thankfully, a few quick swipes with Clorox Triple Action Dust Wipes caught all the dust and dog hair that had accumulated in there. I love that they pick up allergens too. I followed that up with a thorough wipe down with Clorox Disinfecting Wipes for a totally clean slate. The closet looked as sparkly new as the day we moved in.

a creative toddler room update on apartment 34a creative toddler room update on apartment 34

After that good wipe down, I set out to transform this space into a little creative studio for my little guy. Now all his art supplies, legos, stickers and the like are within reach of his little fingertips – and out of my sight! The secret? Boxes on bins, on tubs, on boxes. For example, I found the perfect white bins that hide the (ever growing!) collection of legos. So happy about that.

a creative toddler room update on apartment 34a creative toddler room update on apartment 34

The adorable ABC bins now holding favorite puzzles, blocks and balls are from Pehr Petit. I love that the bins still feel young and playful, but are a touch more elevated in the monochromatic color palette.

a creative toddler room update on apartment 34

Despite my personal aversion to color, I had to pay homage to my kiddo’s creative side by displaying some of his masterpieces and his most-prized possessions on the closet wall – the banjo and ukulele. Now his instruments hang just like his music teacher’s – major bonus points for mama (though he’s probably more excited about the little men they’re hanging from then the display itself).

a creative toddler room update on apartment 34

This little kid table is the perfect workstation for anything creative. I love that the stools can tuck in out of the way. And it’s actually pretty comfortable for me to sit at too.

Finally, I corralled our extensive book collection with wall mounted shelves that make it easy for a toddler to recognize book covers and grab what he wants to “read” for himself. I keep the nicer titles that are less friendly to rough and tough play in the upper bin. It’s the perfect way to make use of the vertical space.

With this little makeover, I accomplished two goals: dramatically increasing the amount of usable playspace in my son’s room and I gave myself way more storage and the ability to tuck away mess with the simple swing of a door. It was a win all around. I’m happy to report that my son is just as thrilled with his new space as I am!

How much time do you have to get ready in the morning? An hour (liar). 30 minutes? 15? Three?! No matter how quickly you have to get out the door, you can in fact make your bed and you’ll be SO much happier at the end of the day if you do. No seriously! Thankfully, bed making does not have to be an arduous experience.

how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34

I’ve been slowly working to get my master bedroom together (why do we always neglect the room we spend so much time in)?! While we still hardly have any furniture, I decided it was time to make our bed a truly inviting space. My years-old set of all white bedding we carried over from our old loft was feeling rurl tired. To transform our space, I turned to Parachute, the online go-to for amazing bedding, and couldn’t be happier with the final result! This is a bed that proves you can in fact, make a wonderfully inviting bed in almost no time at all. What do you guys think?

how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34

Step one in designing a bed is picking your vibe. While I styled my guest bed to neutral and ultra minimal, I wanted our bedroom to feel a little more sultry. I also wanted to design my bed to match our lifestyle – which trends toward a little chaotic and always on the go. So I set my sights on a perfectly imperfect bed. Sure, there are formal ways to make a bed, really traditional looks, boho and modern styles, but I need something that is pretty low maintenance.

how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34

Next step was picking a color palette. Thankfully, matching sheet sets are a thing of the past. I love that with Parachute you can choose any color combo you like. I paired a lovely 100% Egyptian cotton percale in Sand for my fitted sheet with a deep slate hue for the top sheet. These sheets are super soft straight out of the bag and will only get better as you wash them. I also love that they’re really big – covering the bed beautifully.

how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34

The third step for this perfectly imperfect looks is layering. I firmly believe that the only thing that should go to bed naked is you. Your bed, on the other hand should be layered with a variety of blankets and throws to create that cozy, inviting texture. I added a lovely embroidered coverlet with a global vibe atop my sheets and topped it all off with a Parachute linen duvet cover in Toast (obsessed with their linen – it’s SO good) folded down to reveal all the different textures.

how to make the perfectly imperfect bed on apartment 34

When it comes to pillows, I’m a firm believer that there is no need for piles and piles. Yes, if you stack your bed with all things mud cloth, it’ll get pinned a million times, but what do you actually do with all of them? Sweep them to the floor and then have to pick them all back up again. No thank you. I say keep it classy with no more than four. I chose standard pillowcases in percale to match my sheets because you can actually sleep on them.

When it comes to other accents, I liken throw pillows to jewelry. Throw one on as an accessory to complete the look. I chose a velvet throw pillow in my current color obsession – terra cotta. The addition of velvet adds one more yummy texture to the mix.

A simple, inviting bed that doesn’t require 30 minutes to accomplish. You can make this bed in under 30 seconds. Not convinced? We even made a video to show you just how easy it is to get this laid back, yet sophisticated look. Check it out!

It’s amazing how nice it is to walk into a room at the end of the day and see a warm inviting bed awaiting you. It’s the perfect way to relax at the end of the day – if you can stay awake for more than two minutes.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned wanting to transition our nursery into a toddler room. Every time I step in there right now, the space just doesn’t seem to fit the energy and fun that my two year old now embodies. And while I’d prefer to wave my wand and magically transform the entire space all at once, I am in fact a normal human and have to do it in phases.

But it’s perfect. Because as I did with my laundry room refresh oh so many months ago, I’m again partnering with Clorox to transform what is currently a rather sad mess into something awesome. Check it out.

I am going to transfer my kiddo’s closet from hardly functional into the coolest kid hang out space. As you can see in the pic above, we’re lucky in that we have a very large closet in our kiddo’s room. It’s more than 3′ feet wide and 4′ feet deep. That allows not only for ample storage, but for what could be a good sized play space as well. I’m excited to take what is now a rarely used reading corner (we have a good rocker for that) and instead create a beautiful little “art studio” where Carter can hang out, make art and play. While we all know I don’t really do color, I think this could be a fun place to be stack with vibrant display. Especially since I can always close the doors!

I’ve been gathering inspiration of all the ideas I plan to tuck into this space.

toddler room ideas on Apartment 34

The first to-do is to tackle book storage. Right now Carter’s entire library is crammed onto a few closet shelves. Instead, I’d like to display Carter’s book collection on the wall in an easy-to grab fashion. I love the look of wall-mounted book displays. That solution will also free up shelf space for art supply & toy storage.

toddler room ideas on Apartment 34

I also want to create a gallery wall in the closet. A fun place to display a combination of family photos, kid friendly art and some Carter originals will add a lot of visual interest and allow me to accentuate the 10 foot ceilings.

toddler room ideas on Apartment 34

I’m also intrigued by doing some sort of playful design element. Whether it’s simple highlights with washi tape, or a little framed chalkboard, I want to create a mini creative wonderland when you open those closet doors.

Then there is my favorite OCD, over-organizing activity – organizing the shelves. Toys, legos, art supplies  and clothing. I need to maximize all the shelf space, do some fun display ideas and make sure I can store everything. I want to make this space work quadruple duty.

I’m giving myself the month of August to get this little space whipped into shape so be sure to check back. The reveal will be coming!

This week on Instagram I’ve been talking about transitioning my son’s room from a nursery to a toddler room so I thought I’d talk about here as well! Now that our kiddo is two (going on teenager), I think he’s ready for a big boy update. It also feels like the perfect summer project!

Now there a lot of different directions I could go and I’m having a bit of tough time zeroing in on one big idea.

toddler room designs on Apartment 34

I’m certainly drawn to Scandi-style which I think could easily evolve and grow as my kid does.

toddler room designs on Apartment 34

At the same time, an accent wall situation would add fun color and playfulness.

toddler room designs on Apartment 34

This loft bed situation is a kid’s dream come true.

toddler room designs on Apartment 34

Though a more rustic version is probably more realistic. I do love how loft beds offer more place space underneath them.

toddler room designs on Apartment 34

This space is just precious, but I’m afraid it won’t age well. I’m not really looking to redo this kids room every 1-2 years.

And of course, my minimalist tendencies creep back in and I think maybe I just keep things really clean, cool and simple. But is that not playful enough??

What say you?? Anyone experienced with the evolving kid room challenge who cares to share their secrets? Any particularly fun ideas you’ve seen or mistakes you’ve made?! Design aficionados – any genius ideas?? I’m in the mood boarding phase at the moment so I’ll definitely share where I land!

How does one develop their sense of style? Are you born with it? Do you try a new style on like a spring coat, shrugging it off again when it no longer suits? Do you cultivate your style over years? There are, in fact, thousands of influences that impact how our style evolves and crystallizes, but you cannot discount your childhood’s impact on how you approach the world today.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, and now a mom myself (is it normal that it still feels weird to say that), it’s fun to reflect on my childhood home, and how my mom’s style influences are showing up in our house. I’ve partnered with some of my favorite power mamas, Taylor Sterling of Glitter Guide and Jen Pinkston of the Effortless Chic to share how our moms influence us today. Oh and you’ll want to keep scrolling because there’s details about a $1000 GIVEAWAY below!

A lovely collection with Anthropologie on Apartment 34

At first pass, the connection to my mom’s style influence didn’t seem obvious. Our aesthetics are vastly different – I prefer a monochromatic, modern look while my mom has a more eclectic mix and match style. I love mid century classic pieces while my mom’s home is made up of a mix of antiques, family heirlooms and a few holdovers from the 80’s (sorry mom). I’m rather color phobic, while my mom embraces it. But as I looked around the Victorian and examined the direction the design is taking, it dawned on me.

A lovely collection with Anthropologie on Apartment 34 + $1000 Giveaway!A lovely collection with Anthropologie on Apartment 34 + $1000 Giveaway!

No matter how hard I try to maintain a minimalist hand in my designs, I cannot help but accumulate little collections (or big ones as the case may be). When it comes to beautiful objects, I’m like like a moth to a flame – just like my mom. Now her’s tend toward the natural, like houseplants and beach stones, while I have a weakness for home goods; glassware, vintage bottles, bowls of all shapes and sizes. Every time I purge, it seems a new collection springs up in the newly emptied spot. In particular, my mom instilled in me an endless love of both wooden bowls and ceramics. I am a child of the 70’s after all. When I see a piece that calls to me, I just cannot help myself. Occasionally vintage Tibetan bells in a little beachside tourist shop also catch my eye, but you’re always allowed outliers.

But there’s a reason! Just look at how pretty they are. Natural pieces are the easiest way to add gorgeous texture and warmth to any room.

And while some might find a collection superfluous, if an object brings you joy, that’s all the reason you need to have it in your life. When I close my eyes and picture my mom’s house, I can see all her little collections – on a bookself there, on the kitchen counter there, in my mind’s eye. I like the idea that my kid might be able to do the same one day.
