We interrupt our regularly scheduled Wedding Week to finally reveal our labor of love: our new and much improved, Apartment 34 team office!

We said we’d have the office makeover done in a month, but like all good design projects, it ended up taking four! Thankfully it’s here now and it’s pretty awesome {if we do say so ourselves!}. We’re SO excited to finally be able to invite you in for a tour.

The space needed to be completely refreshed in order for our growing team to get down to business. This included an all new layout complete with a jumbo work station as well as a “creativity charging corner” for thumbing through computer-free inspiration {SO necessary!}. A dramatic black accent wall, a custom brass pendant and spots on the walls for impromptu moodboards are just a few of our favorite details!!

You’ll want to stay tuned as we break down fresh ideas that you can easily replicate in your own space next week. We plan to dive into all of the ins, outs, sources and how-to’s. If there’s anything you spy that you want us to be sure and cover, just leave a comment with your request!

Until then, you can find even more pics of the office on VSCO Journal! We were thrilled to share insights from our design process and a bit more detail about the crazy world of running a blog with the VSCO team. The interview, with more of our makeover reveal and some never seen “befores,” is HERE. And a very special thanks to VSCO for the feature and all the AH-mazing products you produce that help make our photos so much prettier!!

Curious about what the Apartment 34 office looked like before? You can see last year’s studio tour HERE and my tips for making simple updates to your space on Refinery 29 HERE! I’m also be pinning to a moodboard inspired by our redesign with Blu Dot for the next two weeks HERE.

Ok, let’s be real for a minute. After scouring the web in search of modern wedding trends to share, there really weren’t many. The majority of weddings seemed like…the majority of weddings. They all began to look very similar- rustic settings, farm tables flanked by ghost chairs with the chalkboard signs and calligraphy leading guests to their seats. And while don’t get us wrong, we love a good ghost chair, we’re kind of…over them.

So we dug a little deeper and in spite of the larger part of the wedding landscape being the same, we did find some standout statements that we L-O-V-E! For example, can you even believe this wedding dress?? But we’re just getting warmed up…

7 modern wedding trends on apartment 34

The Venue: It’s no secret we love a good loft and the idea of living out your big day in an uber modern space adorned with natural light and bright white walls is exactly what we had in mind. After snoozing through a hundred barn weddings, a loft feels clean and “downtown,” but still inviting and totally on trend.

The Invites: Wedding invitations don’t have to come complete with four different types of paper inserts, glitter confetti and a hologram of the couple. Keeping the invitation suite simple with a whole lot of understated and chic details. We’re loving the gold lines and the minimally embellished feel of this monogram thank you card!

7 modern wedding trends on apartment 34

The Food: Does it ever cross your mind that it’s possible that every wedding you’ve attended could be catered by the same company? They certainly tend to taste that way. Over and over again we see the same chicken option, the same salmon option, blah, blah. We love the idea of mixing up the menu and going more big-city coastal. Mussels? Check! Flatbread hors d’oeuvres? Gladly!

The Flowers: You can’t really go wrong with a classic white bouquet, but if you’re in the mood to try something new, attempt DIY’ing your wedding day flowers {well, let’s be clear – ask someone to do this for if you’re the bride!}. Apparently it is all the rage though! From paper flowers bigger than your head to paper bouquets and single stem centerpieces, it certainly is a cheaper option to consider!

7 modern wedding trends on apartment 34

The Cake: This cake is probably one of the most gorgeous we’ve ever seen. It’s a true work of art, nay, a masterpiece. The gold leaf flecked on the top tiers and the brushstroke-like imperfection of the bottom tiers is pure magic. Cake toppers?! What are those to a cake like this?…A thing of the past!

7 modern wedding trends on apartment 34

The Makeup: A smoky eye is an obvious makeup choice for brides. It’s usually more glamorous than an everyday face and makes a girl feel sexy. But we’d argue the trend to go super natural on the face is just as seductive. This barely-there makeup is per-fection and feels so new, don’t ya think?

The Dress: While some might argue to go for classic shapes, we say they clearly haven’t seen this dress! Watching a bride break the mold of safe silhouettes in favor of a dramatic, bold and daring dress inspires us to never play it safe. This dress is so SJP and we can’t get enough of it.

Are there any trends you’ve seen of late that are new and exciting to you? And are you the least bit tired of seeing the “same” rustic wedding like we are?? We’d love to know any new trends you’re loving.

This week we are kicking off everything wedding! We have to admit, it’s a topic we don’t foray into much anymore {shame on us!}, but since one of our team members’ {now!} fiancé put a ring on it, we can’t stop the whole, “ok, let’s talk wedding” conversation.

Inspired by what ought to be one of the most beautiful days of one’s life, this week we’ve gathered all our favorite modern wedding trends for you. Think gorgeous gowns that will make you stray from your budget faster than you can say “i do” and creative ideas to get your wedding bells ringing. So without further ado, we’re kicking things off with something fabulously blue! {rhyming totally intentional!}

We all know the saying. Something old, something new, something borrowed…. Traditionally these good luck tokens are only obvious to the bride and those in her party, but we love the idea of the modern bride being a little more adventurous in her indigo-inspired selection. From powder blue pumps to a statement-making royal blue necklace, these bold pops of blue would bring life and spunk to your big day!

We not only have our sights on the wedding ceremony itself, but also the much anticipated honeymoon! Be daring and beautiful in a sexy blue number like this Stella McCartney lingerie set {that’s on sale!}. Or start the marriage off on the right foot with these comfortable slip on sneakers– perfect for exploring the Hawaiian islands or streets of Rome!

While we certainly don’t want to see the something blue tradition die, we’re super into the idea of modern interpretations. Do you have any super creative something blue ideas? Pretty please share. We’d love to know!

With summer shopping season in full swing, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting everything {and end up not getting anything due to severe indecision}!. It happens to us all. We’ve tried the whole waiting period- coming back to the shoes in a week and seeing if they still make our heart flutter- but that method ends up being tough to keep organized, especially when you’re oscillating between THIRTY different things on your wishlist. But our pesos only go so far so we’ve got to be choosey!

This month we’ve set out to pick through our inbox and blog feeds to see what can make the cut – we’re talking only the best of the best – and we’re calling it The Edit.

the-edit-final

Sachajuan Ocean Mist Texturizing Spray

> Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag

> Tibi Fiore di Cactus Top

> Common Projects Sandal

Tis the season for easy to manage hair. That’s why we’re loving Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist Texturizing Spray. Curl your hair and then give the roots a little spritz for a more tousled look. Or you can spray it on wet locks for a Kate-Moss-frolicking-in-the-sand vibe, {basically who you want to look like all summer}.

Mansur Gavriel has turned into a must-have classic that is SO hot right now. The totes are great, but we have our eyes on a bucket bag! They’re much easier to throw over your shoulder on a sunny day and the pack way more than you’d think. The leather is as smooth as the guy at the bar last night- only proving that you need this bag.

Ever since this Fiore di Cactus print hit our inbox we can NOT stop thinking about it. It’s modern and abstract, complete with mesh panels and frankly, what summer is all about- easy, breezy, beautiful…{wait, that’s Covergirl!}. Anyway, we’re obsessed with this print from Tibi– it’s the top to wear to a BBQ, to the beach, happy hour- anywhere. It also has matching bottoms {skirt or pants!} which would just be BEYOND.

A super-chic neutral sandal is the answer for the perfect “from where I stand” selfie. Yes, our mind now thinks in Instagrams. It won’t take away from the awesome floor tiles you’re snapping a pic of and it’s all about the understated leather sandal right now! Plus, you could literally wear this color with anything you throw on!

There you have it. We think these summer inspired picks should keep your shopping itch at bay, at least until July rolls around of course!

That’s right. We love women who love to run the show, so it’s a no-brainer that we immediately swooned over Alisa Carroll. She is the Editor in Chief of the newly launched publication, San Francisco Cottages & Gardens {yay for print magazines!}. We also swooned because she is awesome. Like, really awesome! Here’s how this conclusion was drawn:

We sent her interview questions over email {it’s faster- people are busy- idk, it’s the 21st century?} and when she sent them back with the words “cray, cray” in her answers, we just about died. Who was this new and {seriously!} fierce EIC, who was cool enough to quote a Jay-Z song?! We had to know. Thankfully, she wanted to meet us too {?} so we met her at one of her favorite San Francisco boutiques, March {epic!}, where we talked leather pants, dogs with underbites and oh yeah, the important stuff…

With a slew of experiences behind her {and in front of her!}, Alisa shared with us the path to her latest role, a peek into what running a magazine is really like and her advice on…well anything we could think to ask, because we’ll take whatever words of wisdom this dynamic woman is willing to offer up!

Her Background

My path has definitely not been linear, but I’ve always written. For the first decade of my adult life, I was in a band, songwriting and touring around. It was a really defining experience—it helped me find my voice and figure out who I was. But ultimately I wanted life to be a little more stable! I’d always been involved in visual art and design, so I began writing for magazines like Elle Décor and Interior Design, and collaborated with artists and designers to promote their work, Jay [Jeffers] being one of them. We met ten years ago and its been an amazing, inspiring relationship ever since. A few years ago, when I started to feel the pull to go back to writing full time, I was lucky enough to be invited to edit 3D, the annual journal of the San Francisco Design Center. Then Jay and I began developing the book, and I came on board at SFC&G this past December. [My career] happened very organically. To me that’s always a good sign–when something doesn’t have to be forced, it feels like I’m on the right path.

A Day In The Life

Every day is about trying to balance the creative and business aspects of the magazine. I might go from interviewing a designer for a story to meeting with the social media team to editing the product section. For example, this past week we shot a phenomenal home in Monterey, so I was scouting the styling elements and shooting, then hustled back up to the city to do the final edits on the current issue, then worked on researching a story for the next issue.

On Being the Boss-Lady

[Being Editor-in-Chief] is my dream job, but a magazine is also a train that does not stop! As soon as the current issue is off and running, we’re planning the next. So while we’re all writing stories for June/July, for example, we’re also planning and scouting for August/September.  It’s cray-cray.

editor-in-chief-alisa-carroll-apartment-34-girl-crush

On Success

Being lucky enough to know kind, smart, creative people who have been willing to help guide me has contributed to my success. My pinch-me moment was definitely the book launch in London. I walked up to the Chelsea Design Center and there was Collected Cool in the bookstore window. I get butterflies every time I see it on a shelf.

Her Advice

Find your true voice and don’t compromise it. I had drinks recently with a dear friend, an accomplished writer and editor, who still lays awake at night worrying about the crop of a photo or a font. That kind of meticulousness is really what it all comes down to. I hate to think of what percentage of my life I’ve spent writing “no one” then changing it to “no body” and then back and forth again a hundred times. It’s totally obsessive and ultimately may not matter to anyone (anybody) but me, but it’s the only way to get to what’s beautiful and meaningful.

It’s also ok to screw it up. There’s a great scene in “The Young Victoria” in which she says, “If there are mistakes they will be my mistakes, and no one else will make them.” It’s important to take a risk. Like, I probably never should have worn my hair in cornrows, but now I know.

About SFC&G

We are committed to creating a magazine that we hope people will feel authentically reflects the beauty and soul of San Francisco. SFC&G is the only design publication that is dedicated exclusively to this city, and all of our coverage emerges locally–we want to distill the creativity of the Bay—from interior design to landscape to visual art–into its pages. I’m excited about our May issue, which is all about verdant living – the experience of the Bay in spring when we head back to Dolores Park in earnest, to events like Art Market and the Film Festival and, of course, to the bar to begin imbibing awesome cocktails with absurdly esoteric herbs. Cheers!

And per Girl Crush tradition, we asked Alisa to answer our rapid fire Q&A!

Last week I made a crack that ruffled a few feathers. For those who didn’t catch it, I said that a modern woman’s life is lived in pants. While a gross generalization that I realize I shouldn’t have blanketed across all woman-kind, that certainly is the case for me. Dresses and skirts are just not in my repertoire. They don’t even cross my mind. I usually find skirts too dressy, too fussy…just too feminine for me!

But for all of you lovely skirt-rockin’ ladies who were miffed, I think I’ve met my match: a skirt look I could wear and not only feel totally modern, but most importantly, confident in!

apartment34-modern-skirts2midi-skirt-trend-apartment-34apartment-34-modern-skirts

My challenge with skirts is the gender stereotypes they often reinforce. When too short they read as sexy. When in feminine colors, they read young. When too conservative, suddenly you’re matronly. So I just stick to pants and avoid the pitfalls all together!

But these looks have got me thinking again. The proportions feel mature, not dowdy. The cuts feel classic, not prissy. They give off an aire of strength and authority. These are skirts for strong working women and that is something I can totally get on board with. Ultimately, you have to wear what makes you feel your very best, but I’ve realized I shouldn’t slight entire wardrobe categories out of hand. I just have to find the version that works for me.

So I stand, in a skirt, corrected. {well, I will as soon as I can get my hands on one of these beauts!} – Erin

You may remember a couple of weeks ago when we packed the station wagon {yes that’s what I drive!} with the whole Team Apartment crew and headed to wine country. Not only did we hang at one of our favorite Sonoma wineries, Scribe, we also took the not so frequent opportunity to visit Healdsburg, a small town north of Sonoma- that just so happens to be quite the emerging culinary hotspot. It’s home base to the fan-favorite, Bravo TV Top Chef hottie contestant, Louis Maldonado!

We met Chef Louis on his turf where he gave us the Top Chef treatment. He threw down a mean {and almost too pretty to eat!} 3 course meal at his restaurant Spoonbar.

top-chef-apartment-34

Naturally, we were pretty giddy about meeting a T.V. celebrity- you just can’t surpress the Bravo fan in a girl! But we played it super cool {for the most part} and desperately held back the urges to role play Top Chef judges Padma and Tom as we tasted Chef Louis’ out of this world food combinations.

From trout roe + granola + mustard seeds with deviled egg, to charred asparagus + buttermilk + radishes + abalone mushrooms, topped off by a pistachio dulce de leche cake with Prosecco and froster raspberries, each dish was just as good as the last. And we carry no shame when we say we licked those beautiful plates clean!

trout-spoonbar-apartment-34spoonbar-top-chef-louis-apartment-34

The fish flight was the first course and definitely a team favorite. Trout, trout roe, Kanpachi- all of the ingredients tasted fresh and clean, complimented by unfamiliar pairings like fermented chili and salsa verde. The Trout roe with granola and mustard seeds was so good we all ended up fork fighting for the last bite!

spoon-bar-apartment-34top-chef-spoonbar-healdsburg-apartment-34

The second course, the “meat” dish, comprised of the meaty abalone mushrooms {we still have no idea what those are!} was by far the prettiest thing we’ve ever had the opportunity to eat. Criss crossed with charred asparagus and dotted with flashes of pink radishes, we “ooooed” and “awwed” at the dish for a good couple of minutes before we dove in!

dessert-spoonbar-apartment-34

The dish that certainly had no chance of surviving was the dessert: pistachio dulce de leche cake. It’s just not right to make five people share something like this. All the rules we learned in kindergarten went right out the window and we were such hogs that our poor photographer, Aubrie, almost missed her chance at a bite!

chef-louis-top-chef-

And just when we were beginning to feel like Top Chef royalty {being wined and dined is quite the life!}, the meal came to a close. Although we never wanted to leave, Chef Louis definitely made us feel like stars while we were there. And luckily for us, great food isn’t the only thing Spoonbar offers! Guess again – we’re not talking about the chef…

You’ll have to wait for the big culinary insight. Hint: it involves a secret menu! Oh yea.

I decided to save the best part of my Mykonos recap for last….what I wore! I’m one of those fashion freaks who loves planning outfits for trips, but I understand that packing can be very stressful. I’m here to assure you, with the right mix of science and art, it can be mastered.

apartment34-mykonos-fashion1apartment34-mykonos-fashion3

I’ve developed a standard routine for major trip preparation. Step one is to layout all the clothes/outfits I want to bring. Step two: cut everything in half. And then maybe take away one or two more pieces! Overpacking for vacation is just not necessary. If a beach is involved you will end up wearing pretty much the same thing everyday. However, if, like me, you’re a bit clothes obsessed having a few options on hand is still a must. To ensure my inner fashionista’s needs are met, I’ve established a few packing rules of thumb. This is my standard packing checklist:

> One pair of jeans/pants – white for Greece of course! {your second pair you’ll wear on the plane}

> One pair of shorts {you really don’t need more than that!}

> One short dress and one long dress

> One pair of heels, 1-2 pairs of sneakers, 1-2 pairs of flat sandals

> One sweater or sweatshirt

> 1-2 long-sleeved shirts

> 2-3 bathing suits

And then there are my favorite secret weapons: accessories! You’d be amazed how fresh an outfit feels when you add a scarf, throw on a necklace or swap out your sunglasses {I’m very into statement-making sunnies these days – The Dreslyn is my go-to for hot options}. And those little touches take up much less room in your suitcase! So stick to wardrobe basics but splurge on your accoutrements. As you also may have noticed from the pics above, I’m a huge fan of the vacation hat. It means you don’t have to touch a hair dryer for a whole week. Hello, bliss. I usually just pick up a cheap one upon arrival. I’ve never found a good way to pack a hat – have you??

To stock up for this trip, I headed to a few of my favorite spots…

mykonos-must-pack2

Ella Moss supplied me with the entire foundation of my wardrobe including my new favorite travel companion: a great jumper that I could style a zillion ways. I also snagged a stand-out top and a cute swimsuit coverup. Your footwear is also quite important. When I travel I feel strongly about not standing out as obviously American. And wearing running shoes is a dead giveaway. I loved my chic and sleek mesh Keds for Kate Spade. I was able to walk through the cobbled streets of Mykonos Town comfortably but didn’t feel like I stuck out. I also made sure my tech was a little spruced up for the trip with a cheeky case that charged my phone!

Despite all my pre-planning, I did make a few missteps on this trip. Unseasonably cool weather and high winds left me wishing for one more warm option so a cardigan was purchased. I also forgot to carry on socks for the plane – a major must for any long haul flights! But overall I was really happy with my packing plan. Everything I brought got worn at least once and I still had room in my suitcase to bring home 1-2 souvenirs!

I consider my Mykonos style mission accomplished. But what about you?? Do you have any packing secrets you rely on? I’d love to know!
