Hi Friend! Since it’s the first day of Fall, I figured you deserved a bonus Friday post. This has always been my favorite season for fashion after all. The coats, the boots, the layers! It’s when getting dressed gets interesting again. But at the same time, I love the concept of the capsule wardrobe and uniform dressing – but how to do you combine the two? A beautifully edited closet and clothes that make you feel fabulous when you put them on. Well, I found the solution and it’s called Kamperett. You can consider all of your fall shopping done, right now.

I’ve shared Kamperett collections before (like right here). Designed and made in San Francisco by two women who understand great style, but also know the needs of the modern, multi-tasking mom, Kamperett has taken their fall collection to new wearable levels. You have stunning pants, the perfect bodysuit, amazing coats, a sweet blouse – virtually everything you need to create a complete closet. Everything is simple and classic but also head turning. Dresses have sheer panels. Pants have the perfect kick hem. The dresses drape just so. And course so much of the fall collection is in my favorite black & cream color palette. Mmmm, my happy place. These are the pieces you’ll love wearing now and will keep for years.

Every single one of these pieces is calling my name – including the dresses! I know – me in a dress – but I actually already wore one right here and never felt more fabulous. So feel free to stop your online shopping for the random piece that everyone will have this fall and instead, think about emptying your closet and only adding back what’s special. This line certainly fits that bill.

While my personal style posts have been much fewer and farther between (thanks, motherhood and late 30s) this post from a few years back is a look I’d still gladly rock today (though I admit, the heels would probably be traded out for flats). But even years later, I’m loving this look and thinking I need to recreate this fall style when I’m back from Kauai!

As fall officially creeps up on us,  it’s time to break out your favorite cool-weather pieces. But as I sifted through my sea of dark jeans, black coats, and cream sweaters, things were looking a little too…shall I say predictable? Truth is, I’ve been dying to push my boundaries and try the new hot hue in town: oxblood.

Oxblood, maroon, wine, whatever you like to call it, it is technically not a neutral, but I’m here to convince you that it’s an incredibly wearable color that you’re going to want to get your hands on this season. I can attest, you’ll want to wear it with everything.

Old-Navy-October-1fall style on apartment 34

When looking to make my first wine-colored purchase, I was thrilled when I came across oxblood waxed skinny jeans. Talk about an upgrade from your basic denim. These have just the right amount of sheen and their extra stretch makes sure they hug in all of the right places, making a super chic foundation for a sophisticated fall look.

I liked the idea of pairing the oxblood with another great neutral: navy. The two dark colors together make a killer team. They have a similar depth of tone and a richness that really compliment each other well. There’s no harsh break for the eye, just one smooth color-blocked palette. And you know me, I love a good turtleneck.

And of course, you have to top off the quintessential fall ensemble with a great coat. A classic peacoat shape, lush plaid pat, ern and fabric like tweed or harringbone will bring in texture and add a shot of sophistication to your style. Try the streetstyle du jour – draping it on your shoulders (no longer du jour, but I still do it all the time!) The architectural lines of a draped coat compliment the skinnies and make your stems appear to go on for days.

get the look: oxblood skinny jeans // tweed coat // satchel // pointed toe d’orsay pump // navy turtleneck // sunglasses

It’s official, oxblood is my new “neutral” this season. It’s totally breaking me out of my comfort zone and dare I say, I really like it! Who knew I would be turning my back on basic black and opting for a little punch of color this fall.

Now the question is, will you?

Fall is always the best style season of the year. Before you’re buried under winter coats, but the summer’s glow has yet to fade, now is the time to play. You can have fun with proportion, with textures, with adding a little edge. I’ve always been a fan of menswear influenced style. It gives off a subtle sexiness while being incredibly practical for daily life; think wide-legged pants, flats and a cozy sweater or two. When you mix them all together you get a decidedly strong, but thoroughly feminine approach to taking the new season on in style.

Continue to scroll for some of my current favorite looks.

Extra-wide culottes paired with a snug sweater have me like whoa. Especially in this creamy, caramely warm color palette. And yes…those so ugly they’re really ridiculously good looking shoes are starting to appeal to me too.

All white is always alright in my book. Those denim culottes are also calling my name and I just might have to add a girlie white blouse to my white shirt arsenal.

A classic trouser feels fresh when it’s cropped and is an easy thing to get you out of my your denim rut.

A touch of blush & metallic lend a girlie touch to borrowed from the boys staples like bomber jackets and loafers.

A peacoat never goes out of style. To make it more wearable in this early part of fall when the weather just can’t make up its mind, pair yours with some bright whites and a chunky open toe sandal.

I’m a big fan of adding a few choice pieces to my closet around this time of year. Especially ones I know I’ll love for a long time – rather than just buying into the it-trend of the moment. Any of these options would make my closet very very happy for years to come.

I know, I just said Fall in the middle of July. But have no fear, because the most wonderful time of the year is here – the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! For those who have yet to be indoctrinated, take it from a Seattle native. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is pure genius because you can scoop up beautiful new styles on sale. This is not last season’s crap stuff that they can’t get off the rack. Everything you see here will go back up to full price once the Anniversary Sale ends (if they don’t sell out).

After a nearly two shopping hiatus (hello pregnancy and first year of motherhood aka living in yoga pants), this year mama is ready to spruce up her closet! These are officially my fall must-haves.

apt34-onsale-list

> So Real 48mm Sunglasses. A new season always requires a fresh pair of sunnies.

> Kathleen Peep Toe Booties. I haven’t added a peep toe to my boot wardrobe yet and the time has come.

> Rebecca Minkoff Avery Cross Body. A cute cross body bag always come in handy.

> Rag & Bone Double Breasted Vest. Wear it alone while it’s still warm and then layer when the weather cools. Yes.

> Topshop Color Block Boxy Top. I will attempt to wear some color, I will attempt to wear some color.

> Burberry Craysmoore Toggle Closure Short Gabardine Peacoat. Cropped coats are the bees knees.

> Phillip Lim Bucket Bag. No explanation necessary.

> Hinge Cora Block Heel. A chic sandal I can start wearing now? Yes please.

> All Saints Paradise North/South Tote. When you need a little more room and an alternative to black.

If you like what you see, head to Nordstrom lickity split (who says that? am I 100 years old? Anywho). You can shop early access to the Anniversary Sale now through July 21. The catch –  you have a Nordstrom card. But it is the best way to make sure the hot shizz doesn’t sell out. Because trust me it does.

If you’re not in love with my top nine, I couldn’t help myself and kept bookmarking more faves. You can shop them all right here. I hope you find a treasure or two.

The other week we shared our favorite fashion trends spotted on the streets of New York City, during New York Fashion Week! We were in the thick of the madness as the city’s hubs began to fill with fashionistas strutting their stuff, while quite literally streets shut down and people stared. It was one of the most exciting experiences about fashion week- after all, people watching is always a good idea! But with so many amazing outfits zooming past, it’s hard to take in every detail that our fellow trendsetters have meticulously paid attention to while getting dressed. So we fanatically snapped our lens through the frenzy to capture a few. We’re obsessed with these ensembles – no detail overlooked!

nyfw-5

We love this very SJP moment – cobalt blue pumps paired with plaid. YES.

nyfw-13

Bold stripes on a traditional pinstripe have us rethinking how to be playful with button-ups this fall!

nyfw-11

Raspberry red lip + cream vest coat + a plain white waffle knit made show stopping with suspenders and metallic clutch? So many good things here – this sophisticated combo is fashion week gold.

nyfw-14

Sleeves are having a major moment, make them ruffled!

nyfw-7

Funky high waisted and wide legged pants (with awesome fringe!) and gold shoes? This unique look reminds us to have fun with fashion.

nyfw-15

Thumb rings and wrist-wearable monogramed clutches. Noted.

nyfw-9

Rock an uber modern faced silver watch and people won’t know what hit ’em. Something from the fashion future, certainly.

Which details are you in love with most? We can’t wait to incorporate these inspired moments into our looks this season!

Fall is my favorite season for so many reasons. Refreshingly crisp air, tart Pink Lady apples and golden afternoon light – I can’t get enough it. But it’s also my favorite time of year for style. You get to layer again, play with texture and wear rich warm colors. Truth be told, I’ve had a hard time finding my style since having Carter. It may look like I’ve regained my pre-baby shape but things have…shifted shall we say. It’s been challenging to find things that fit well and feel good. Stepping back into my signature heels has felt like torture. And if it isn’t made of sweatshirt material it’s felt totally impractical.

But last week I decided I needed to do something to feel more like myself again.

20151002-IMG_9917-Edit2

I slipped back into my black skinny jeans (yes, it was a tight squeeze), pulled on some killer fall boots and got ready for a mama’s afternoon out. Of course it wouldn’t be Fall without a new coat! Since I’m rediscovering my pre-baby closet I’ve been pretty judicious about my purchases, but this Adam Lippes for Target plaid coat had me at hello. While I realize the whole 90’s plaid thing is having a comeback right now, I love how the jumbo size and soft color palette breaks the usual plaid rules. It feels sophisticated and modern rather than grunge-esque. Mama approved.

20151002-IMG_9970520151002-IMG_0140-Edit1

I’ve also never met a plaid scarf I didn’t like. They are the perfect fall accessory – not a ground breaking statement I realize, but they are the perfect way to perk up a tired closet without breaking the bank. And they’re easy to justify. You can use them to stay warm on chilly mornings and then they serve as the perfect amount of flair for the rest of the day. Throwing on a silky fringe plaid scarf in warm neutral tones made my look even more autumnal – and I love how the mix of plaids play so nicely with one another.

Getting out and about inspired me to start playing with pieces that are already in my closet too. Mixing tripes and plaid is another fun way to spice up your look without having to buy some crazy print you’d only wear once. I love the pop collar of the Target flannel blazer that I found. It’s box plaid is the perfect match for a striped turtleneck. I’d rock this look with jeans or even a skirt {!} and my favorite peep toe booties.

apt34plaid

Needless to say, getting a little dressed up and out of the house for a couple of hours of window shopping definitely helped me get my style mojo back. Never mind that I was back in sweats about five minutes after getting home!

As fashion month starts to wind down {New York, London, Milan, Paris, oh my!}, our eyes have been peeled for the hottest trends and fashion forward styles. We’ve been officially more obsessed than usual after sending our Editorial Director into the heat of it all, as New York kicked off the season’s best fashion show. We’re not talking about the happenings on the runway inside Milk Studios, we’re talking about the show outside on the streets! Here are five totally approachable street style trends we spotted, loved and desperately want to try.

The belt knot is SO on our list of trends to try this fall. Love it with this sheer blouse and long denim skirt. It would look great tied over a coat or sweater too for cooler days!

nyfw-3

Suspenders holding up your favorite burnt sienna colored culottes or high waisted denim is so hot for fall. We love the sexy nerdy style. Move over, Urkel. This trend is uber chic!

nyfw-10

Scrunched up socks showing past your ankle boots cut off those skinny ankles and make that leg look good, girl. We love the idea of pairing this street grungy look with a feminine sequined skirt or flirty dress. The 90’s are back. Embrace it people.

nyfw-4

Summer’s most loved frayed denim look is moving into fall. Denim jackets suddenly feel fresh and new again with that frayed element of surprise!

nyfw-6

Now this is a fun look! Pair an off the shoulder top under your fave overalls or sleeveless jumper for a sassy, fashion forward feel! We promise, you’ll be ahead of the en vogue curve with this trend!

nyfw-1

Don’t you love? We’re obsessed with the fact that despite it being a million degrees in New York at the time, you can still apply these seemingly hot-weather trends to your fall style – just layer up!

Like what you see?! We captured so much good street style while in NYC, we’ll be sharing some outtakes on Facebook later today!

Now that we’ve given summer its farewell kiss, we’ve started scanning the streets for all of Fall’s must-have looks. Since temps haven’t quite hit frigid, we’re loving the clever ways fashionistas are transitioning into the new season. It’s all about layering light cropped summer pieces, juxtaposed with fall textures. Fashion’s finest are still raging on with the fun oversized proportions that were introduced to us on last year’s runways, but with these layered looks, there’s no need to put away warm weather pieces just yet. In fact, we’re keeping those wide legged culottes and short skirts at the front of our closets because with just a few style tips plucked from the pros, each of these end-of-summer looks will take you right into fall.

fall-style-4

Street Style Tip #1: Pair a short skirt with a textured sweater – don’t go too oversized, not yet! By keeping comfy kicks on your feet instead of switching to flat boots and rocking a rad pair of sunnies, you still stay totally indian summer!

fall-style-5

Street Style Tip #2: Instead of reaching for your scarf, try buttoning your blouse all the way to the top. Remember being buttoned up doesn’t mean you have to compromise showing a little sun-kissed skin! Style your conservative top with hole-y denim rolled all the way up to the calf. And if you have a sheer blouse, it doesn’t hurt to throw in some extra sass!

fall-style-3

Street Style Tip #3: Think one season on top, the other on the bottom. Frayed white culottes and chunky heeled sandals work perfectly with a cowl neck sweater, leather jacket and a lush cognac bag!

fall-style-2

Street Style Tip #4: For a cooler {in more ways than one!} day, make sure those denim cullottes hit down towards the ankle, dust off a fun pair of boots and throw in some animal print – lots of it. Keep things balanced with a crisp white tee. A classic summer look of denim and a white tee never looked so “ready for fall”.

fall-style

Street Style Tip #5: And when temps do in fact cool down or you’re going for a drink with friends after work, we love the idea of recreating this capri jean moment. Worn with a kitten heel, thin cotton turtleneck sweater and topped with a luxe car coat in a bold blue, this look feels spot on for early fall. Lots of skin south of the ankle still screams we’re not ready to be bundled up, yet!

Don’t you think Fall fashion trends can feel a tad predictable? It’s the time of year for neutrals, loads of black and if you want to make a foray into color; jewel tones. Emerald, cobalt, ruby and deep fuchsia – they all hit the street running just as the weather begins to change. But pastels? No. They get their heyday around the same time the Easter bunny does and only in very small, yet sweet, doses. That’s why we’re excited to see the light and airy palette smack dab in the middle of fall’s typical color story. We give you: the new neutral.

pastel-trend-apartment-34pastel-trend-2014-apartment-34pastel-coat-fall-2014-apartment-34pastel-coat-apartment-34

From pale pink coats to light blue clutches and soft peach blazers, pastels are having their moment errr, out of the sun? Grey skies create the ideal calming backdrop for this new neutral. While everyone else is doused in black, dare to go on the more bare side, colorfully speaking. This pink coat, this buff colored bag and these sneakers are the perfect place to start!
