I hope you don’t mind, but before we get to our top 5 links of the week, I wanted to get into the business of blogging a bit. It can be a complicated thing. I mean, there’s now an entire cottage industry teaching people how to figure this blogging stuff out. It’s hard because the landscape is constantly changing. Case in point, the Insta-drama that went down this week. Can we have a little chat about it?

In case you missed the hoopla, let me quickly catch you up. Instagram – like Facebook and Pinterest before it – has announced it is going to move to an algorithmic feed, aka rather than publish an organic chronological feed, soon Instagram is going to serve you what the platform “thinks” you’d like to see based on your engagement patterns, any other data it collects on you and let’s be real – its advertising interests.

What does this really mean?

It means Instagram – like Facebook and Pinterest before it – is trying to implement a way to make money that will make shareholders happy. Over the weekend rumors swirled that this change was imminent, so on Monday feeds were blown up by brands and Instagrammers alike who were suggesting to turn on notifications to be alerted when someone they follow posts. Full disclosure, I was one of those bloggers who told my Instagram followers about the option of turning on notifications. Others got real feisty in their rejection of the turn on notifications idea.

But in reality, we have no idea how the change to the Instagram feed is going to affect anyone who uses the platform for their business – like many bloggers do – or anyone who just really loves Instagram. I think it might be an excellent idea to turn on notifications for the 10 or 20 accounts that you want to make sure you see but might not otherwise remember to check. I mean, I barely see my BFF’s posts on Facebook. And perhaps we’ll be pleasantly surprised when Instagram does change and we love every single thing in our feeds. If past experience with Facebook and Pinterest are any indication, somehow I doubt it, but we can hold out hope.

This is just a great reminder that you social media platforms are tools at a blogger’s disposal and it’s part of the job to learn how to adapt when they suddenly change on us. Those who do it well, succeed. For example, I don’t use Pinterest the way I used to because it’s no longer a place to discover inspiring things organically. But I’ve learned to adapt to make Pinterest useful for me personally and for Apartment 34. Once Instagram flips we’ll have to make similar adjustments. The same thing is eventually going to happen to the new bandwagon Snapchat. Is it a bummer? yes. But it’s one of the reasons I think this world of creating and sharing content (and ultimately ideas & a distinct point of view) never gets boring.

So that’s my two cents. Now back to our regularly scheduled Friday Five.

apt 34 friday five

Our endless move has me dreaming of an escape. Cassandra’s guide to Marrakech has me seriously considering plane tickets!

apt34fridayfiveweddedbliss

Wedding season is around the corner and Kimberly’s insanely gorgeous Hawaiian wedding has me dreaming of getting married all over again. I mean, serious dress goals.

apt34fridayfivecleanse

I’m counting down the seconds until I can cook in my new kitchen. I never thought I’d tire of Thai takeout, but oh have I ever. The first thing I’m going to do is whip up all the recipes in Camille’s spring cleanse. It’s high time I say so long to all those carbs!

apt34fridayfivecoolmama

Trying to handle a move with one kid is daunting. I can’t imagine running a household with five children. But this stylish mama is doing it gracefully and I’m equally intrigued by her perspective on decorating and parenting.

apt34fridayfiveredlipstick

If only I could do my makeup with a baby sitting on my lap as well as this beauty blogger. Maybe if I watch her awesome tutorial 10 more times, I’ll finally get it. I’m certainly going to try.

Happy freakin’ weekend lovelies.

Does anyone else feel like January was the longest month ever? I usually love the fresh start of a new year, but right now it feels like the holidays were ages and ages ago. This month was just so intense! I’m hoping February is going to offer the reprieve January usually brings. But I’m not counting on it!

While I try to gather my wits this weekend (I’m making a quick jaunt up to Seattle so be sure to follow the fun on Snapchat: apartment34), here are my Friday Five must-click links of the week. I promise they’re super good.

apt34fridayfive12916

As we all know, the East Coast got pounded by a major snowstorm this week and I was a tad jealous – especially after seeing my friend Will’s amazing photos of New York City. Someday I want our kiddo to experience snow like that – there’s nothing more magical! Click here to see more.

apt34fridayfive129162

I am chomping at the bit to host my first dinner party in our new house – especially after seeing this one. It’s proof positive that just a few simple place-settings and delicious food enjoyed with friends is going to officially turn the house into our home. Click here to check out this sweet tablescape.

If you want to stop feeling lazy – read this. It’ll motivate you to get off your butt and do something!

apt34fridayfive129164

My appetite for stunning interiors is getting more voracious by the day. I think the husband is getting worried. This home tour is currently on the tippy top of my favorite things list. Click here to begin to drool.

Now that my babe is 9 months old, I feel like I’m starting to get a hang of this motherhood thing. Not to get ahead of myself or anything, I’m now having visions of becoming a domestic goddess! I have the cooking thing down pretty well, but cleaning isn’t usually my jam. But these five things you didn’t know you could do with vinegar are pretty cool. They’ve got me wondering what other ingenious hacks are out there that I should know about!

Till Monday friends!

The east coast is about to be hit by a major snow storm this weekend – and I have to admit I’m a little jealous. I was in a remote area of Montana last week – completely cut off from most major conveniences and more importantly a cell phone signal – and it was glorious. We played in the snow, we cooked, drank good wine and talked (face to face, no emojis necessary) for hours. It felt civilized. It felt refreshing. It was a wonderful reminder of what matters most. So to all my friends on the east coast, hunker down and love every second of it. There are very few opportunities to take it slow these days.

That leads straight into the theme of my top five must-click links of the week: the continued search for simplicity!

Blogs We Love Friday Five

Since I’m all about simplifying this year, the next place I want to tackle is my closet. I’m tempted to try the capsule wardrobe trend, but in the meantime I’m just going to try these expert closet organization tips.

Blogs We Love Wanderlust

No matter how many things I have going on at home (like this, this and this), I always dream of where I can go next. This 72 hour trip has me craving a return to one of my favorite cities in the world.

Since it’s a new year, this is a whole new site and I’m all puffed up with new year-fueled ambition, I thought I’d kick off a new Friday tradition: five favorite things from around the web. I never said the idea was ground breaking.

Rather than personal anecdotes or a massive laundry list of links, I want to offer you a tightly curated list of things that will dramatically improve your life, or will at least entertain you for a minute or two! So I hope you enjoy.

I also want to take a hot second to thank everyone for all the kind words about the new site. Your comments, tweets and notes meant the world. SO much work went into this puppy and it’s just so rewarding to know you’re pleased with end result. Because truthfully this site is ultimately for you, not for me.

PPS – congratulations on making through the first work week of 2016! These five things should help you goof off for the rest of the day.

apt34fridayfaves1

We’re only eight days into the new year. It’s not too late to start better habits! I’m definitely planning to focus (hint, hint) on this productivity tip in 2016.

apt34fridayfive2

We’re not the only ones who did a little sprucing up over the holidays. My dear friend Jeanne (you might remember her from this series – should we bring it back in 2016??) debuted a redesign of her site and I’m smitten!

apt34fridayfive3

Sure, we all try to be on our best behavior the first week of the new year. Maybe the first month. But I love that Camille Styles is embracing wellness as a way of life, not a fad.

Whenever you’re having a bad day, click here. No srsly, you’re gonna want to bookmark this.

If January isn’t National Soup Month, it should be.

Can you even believe that Thanksgiving is a week away? I feel a little underprepared for the holiday crazy this year. A part of me wants to hibernate until 2016. But with a little one, it’s about seeing the season through their eyes right? For people with kids, how did you handle a crawling baby and a giant electric tree sitting in your family room? That seems like a recipe for disaster. But this weekend I’m going to hold off on all the holiday hoopla a little longer. A walk in the park, dinner & a movie {yay for grandmas} and a nap are about all I have on my agenda.

How about you? If you need a couple things to keep you busy, I was loving these links this week.

> So fun to see my girl Kelli’s stunning wedding published on Green Wedding Shoes. The day was so lovely and I feel very lucky to have been even a small part.

> This rustic kitchen has me salivating for the day our house is done and I step into my own dream kitchen for the first time.

> The season has me craving homey spaces like this one.

> Sarah is giving me holiday card envy. I guess I need to schedule our family holiday shoot!

> You know how I feel about DIYs, but Erica’s new gift sets might finally make me crafty.

> We’re traveling for Thanksgiving this year but I want to contribute something to the menu. I’m thinking about this dish. Or this one. Or this one. Or maybe I’ll just whip up the drinks.

Till Monday!

Happy Fri-yay friends! Who else is loving the hint of fall that’s in the air?? The light is a little bit lower, the days noticably shorter and we actually had a crisp morning in San Francisco this weekend! I’m starting to crave apple and walks in the park instead of the beach.

Sadly, we won’t get a lot of downtime this weekend. After our escape to wine country (did you see it here??) we’ve got to buckle down and make progress on the house. Who knew picking white paint could be so difficult! I think I’m going to do a post about the design mystery that is white paint. I’ve also done one Periscope tour of the house – would you be interested in seeing another?? If so, watch your phones on Sunday and you’ll get another sneak peek.

In the meantime, here are a ton of fun links to keep you busy!

> Our favorite ladies at Rue Magazine celebrated five years this week. It feels like only yesterday I was at their launch party. Check out the anniversary issue here.

> Fall is officially in the air and it’s time for some new fall recipes. We’re Pinning like crazy hereThis end of summer Kale, Chorizo and Corn Chilled Soup is on top of our recipe list this weekend!

> I’ve been in the mood for a makeover lately and this post just might convince me to bite the bullet!

> You’ll never guess that this gorgeous kitchen remodel is made up of Ikea hacks!

> If you’ve been wanting to build a collection, here is 25 art pieces under $2500 to invest in.

Just in! Everyone’s favorite bucket bag designer is launching shoes. Watch them break the internet.

> We’re creeps and admittedly pounce at the chance to sneak into people’s homes, especially if it’s the home of one of NYFW’s biggest designers, Philip Lim. Tour here.

> And if you just need to laugh, watch this. Multiple times!

Till Monday my dears!

Hi friends, hope you’ve enjoyed your short week! Mine has looked a little bit like the image above. I’ve intentionally kep the baby updates few and far between as I didn’t think that’s what most of you come to Apartment 34 for. I am pleased to report that I’m starting to come out of my newborn haze. But let me tell ya, it wasn’t until about week six of this whole new-mama thing that I felt like I had my wits about me at ALL!. All you ladies with babies out there, I bow down to you. I now understand why they come out cute! But every smile makes the lack of sleep disappear. It’s a pretty amazing experience. You can get a little sneak peek of our new life with baby here. And if you do want more posts about what I’ve discovered about motherhood thus far, do let me know! For now I don’t plan on inundating you with mommy-related stuff.

What are you up to this weekend? Karl the Fog has returned to San Francisco with a vengeance so I’m thinking pajamas, baby snuggles and a TV binge session might be in store for us. I’ve been watching Veep and House of Cards while I’m glued to my glider – I’m a bit of a political junkie. What shows are you been obsessing over lately??

Here are a few other things that caught my eye {around 3am!} this week!!

> The saturated colors in this space are making me swoon.

> Loving this tasteful take on nude art.

> We’re encountering a major summer wanderlust flare-up after seeing this.

> And this.

> It’s Peony season! Their lifespan is so fascinating.

This; because anything with a full serving of fruit is considered a health food by our standards..

> We hosted a little winemakers dinner this week. You can see all the fun at #finefriendsfinewine

> Four words: Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale. It’s not too late to grab crazy good deals on summer clothes! We have our eyes on these, this and this.

> Oh and Net-a-Porter just launched their sale too! It’s rather dangerous, but your closet will thank you!

There is nothing quite like receiving a beautifully handwritten note in the mail, wouldn’t you agree? The rarity of a greeting sent “the old fashioned way” is especially endearing. Old-fashioned cards make the sender feel just as good as the recipient- there’s something so satisfying about actually dropping a note in a mailbox! So why don’t we send out more “thank you’s”, “thinking of you” notes or love letters anymore?? In a world of electronic everything, from emojis to emails, it’s almost as if we’ve forgotten how to express ourselves on pen and paper.

Now, we’re the first to admit we rarely send out cards in the mail ourselves. So, in an attempt to keep the handwritten note from becoming a dying art form, we decided it was time to brush up on expressing ourselves on paper- no laptop or keyboard required!

calligraphy-and-coffee-apartment-34

To help us out, we enlisted on local calligrapher, Kim from Bright Room Studio, to school us on fun writing treatments to jazz up our snail mail. We all gathered round the table on a Saturday morning (with much needed coffee in hand!) to learn some tricks of the trade – and of course we had to share it all with you!

calligraphy-and-coffee-apartment-34-2calligraphy-and-coffee-3-apartment-34 our favorite card stock, envelopes & paper goods from Tiny Prints

When it comes to a handwritten note, where to start is easy: cute stationary is a must {we love this set and this set!}! Then you just have to decide to whom you care to send a special note. We have a little {pretty!notebook in the office to keep track of ideas. It doesn’t have to be a cousin who is celebrating an upcoming birthday or a friend who is expecting. In fact, we argue that it shouldn’t be. We love the idea of sending “just because” notes; they’re such an unexpected gesture that will no doubt turn any friend’s mid-week frown upside down!

coffee-and-calligraphy-apartment-34

But if you’re still feeling stumped on how to write something that’s actually longer than 140 characters, we’ve got your back!

Get Past Notecard-Writer’s Block With These “Just Because” Ideas:

> Send a loved one your favorite memory of them
> Tell a person why they inspire you
> Start a card with “thanks for” & express what you truly appreciate about the recipient
> Share something that will make them laugh- something you’d normally text to them
> Write out a favorite quote from the book you’re reading and send it off for someone else to enjoy

calligraphy-apartment-34calligraphy-and-coffee-apartment-34-3

Once you’ve got your note ready to go, here’s where you can take some additional creative license: addressing the envelopes! There are a couple of different writing styles Kim showed us.

> Calligraphy is a classic way to put a sophisticated spin on your mail. It takes practice to perfect, but it’s so much fun. We urge you to pick up a nib and try it!

> Watercolor is so on trend right now. You can either write with a thin, rounded tip paintbrush or paint a watercolor background and print with a pen over it. We’re obsessed with this playful and free flowing style. Let the paint do its own thing- embrace its imperfections and runs.

> Combine fonts and sizes, spacing between characters and colors to instantly take your handwriting from drab to fab.

The key here is to simply let your creativity flow!

calligraphy-and-coffee-5-apartment-34

And for us creativity definitely starts after coffee! Since it was early and we needed to stay focused on our craft, we set up an ultimate coffee bar with three different roasts from our favorite Bay Area-based coffee roaster, Wrecking Ball {you may remember them from here!}. We felt a little like coffee aficionados while we sipped the different blends. Since you usually get whatever is being served at your local cafe that day, we certainly indulged by taste-testing a cup or two {or three}!

creativity-starts-after-coffeecalligraphy-and-coffee-4-apartment-34coffee-apartment-34

Don’t you just love that print Kim made for our coffee and calligraphy date? You can get your own {in black or white, or both!} here!

envelope-addressing-ideas-apartment-34

So one of these weekends, why not motivate a handful of your gal pals for a different kind of “girls day.” Set up a fun coffee bar; indulge in your local coffee shop’s beans and grind them yourself to really bring things back to basics. Dust off your cutest mugs that quickly get forgotten amidst the convenient thrill of to-go cups. Set out all your pretty paper and cards {don’t forget the address labels either!} with a couple of different writing tools, and you’re set to go for a really simple and super fun weekend activity. We’re here to attest that calligraphy and coffee is the most inspiring way to start off a Saturday!

I couldn’t think of a better way to welcome the first day of summer then heading to LA! That’s right, I’m in the land of sun, surf and palm trees – albeit only briefly. While I have to dash to soak up some warm Cali vitamin D and enjoy my 24 hour adventure in LaLa land {which I’ll be sharing here soon!!}, I just had to pop in to say happy weekend, happy summer and offer up some fabulous links too. It is the longest day of the year afterall – you have plenty of time to enjoy them!

LINK-LOVE-TITLEfriday-links-june

> Which would you say is the “best” coast? All we say is, this lookbook is everything!

> How to make this design eyesore a showstopper. A radiator never looked so good!

> This young, New York based sportswear company knows how to make a [trade]mark!

> Obsessed with this styling competition held in this store- talk about ultimate prop heaven!

> Kan you guess which kool model this kloset belongs to? Hint: Warby Parker collab.

> This deliciously, fresh looking salad is exactly why you should own a mandolin.

> We celebrated weddings this week, but that’s not the only time you should wear this!

> How this popular morning drink has literally become the hottest accessory!

> Bring the outdoor in with shelf inspiration from this amazing Swedish home.

And if you missed it, we debuted our office this week and shared our design tips over on VSCO Journal. More goodness where that came from next week!
