If you haven’t heard of Whistles yet – it’s time. Whistles understands the idea of doing basics that are anything but. No fuss or frills, just attention to detail and quality. Whistles is a brand out of the UK that prides themselves on inspiring women through their intelligent design and laid back luxurious style.

Headed by former Brand Director of Topshop Jane Sheperdson, Whistles mastered the art of stand out pieces that also mix and match in a million different ways- the epitome of wardrobe basics. Needless to say, as a major proponent of building your closet on basics, I’m obsessed with everything from their current collection!

Sweaters have never looked so good- no need to layer and cover up these beauties. The cable knits, oversized turtlenecks, cashmere and wool blends all are so effortlessly luxurious. And that royal blue/navy pony hair bag is perfection!

Whistles just totally gets me. Now I just have to narrow down what I’m going to get! I think these options are a good start…

As soon as Fall officially hit last weekend {we even had our first major downpour!}, I ran straight to my closet to break out my favorite fall pieces. As I sifted through my sea of dark jeans, black coats and cream sweaters, things were looking a little too…shall I say predictable? Truth is, I’ve been dying to push my boundaries and try the new hot hue in town: oxblood.

Oxblood, maroon, wine, whatever you like to call it, it is technically not a neutral, but I’m here to convince you that it’s an incredibly wearable color that you’re going to want to get your hands on this season. I can attest, you’ll want to wear it with everything!

When looking to make my first wine-colored purchase, I was thrilled when I came across these {waxed!} skinnies. Talk about an upgrade from your basic jean. These have just the right amount of sheen and their extra stretch makes sure they hug in all of the right places, making a super chic foundation for a sophisticated Fall ensemble!

I liked the idea of pairing the oxblood with another great neutral: navy. The two dark colors together make a killer team. They have a similiar depth in tone and a richness that really compliment each other well. There’s no harsh break to the eye, just one smooth color-blocked palette. And you know me, I love a good turtleneck!

And of course, you have to top off the quintessential Fall ensemble with a great coat. A classic peacoat shape, lush plaid pattern and fabric like tweed or harringbone will bring in texture and add such a sophisticated look to your style. Try the streetstyle du jour – draping it on your shoulders! The architectural lines of a draped coat compliment your skinnies and make your stems appear to go on for days!

It’s official, oxblood is my new “neutral” this season. It’s totally breaking me out of my comfort zone and dare I say, I really like it! Who knew I would be turning my back on basic black and opting for a little punch of color this Fall.

Now the question is, will you?

It’s no secret that I’m a huge lover of leather – jackets that is! I’ve amassed a healthy little collection over the years and am thrilled that the trend is bigger and better than ever this fall. It seems like every other fashion week streetstyle star has been wearing one. I’m into this trend so much that I actually went so far as to share my enthusiasm with QVC!

A few weeks back they came through San Francisco {and directly into my closet, but more on that next week!} and we did some trend-spotting in my fair adopted city. And guess what – it’s going to air on QVC tonight! That’s right – at 10:00 pm PST you can actually watch me attempt to walk and talk at the same time in QVC’s show Inspired Style. Thankfully, my girl Kelli of Leopard and Lavender was there to riff with me {phew!}

Here’s a little sneak peek of what went down!!

In honor of the fall’s fabulous leather trend and our small screen debut {eek}, we’ve rounded up the one leather piece that you need this season – The Moto Jacket – at a price point for every budget!

Style-Your-Staples-ShortsOur Style Your Staples series has been such fun. We’ve looked at the Pencil Skirt, the Oxford Shirt, and now we’re back with the last installment: the Denim Short!

Yet again, all the ladies put their stylish spin on this summer must-have and now I want to give each and every one of their looks a go. But first, here’s how I tried my hand at working denim cut-offs, Apartment 34 style:

IMG_3411Shorts-Style-Your-Staples-6Shorts-Style-Your-Staples-4

I have to say, this assignment was my biggest styling challenge yet. Though I’m tall and obviously have long legs, I’ve never been a huge short-shorts wearer. I don’t know what it is – maybe being in my 30s, maybe living in slightly chilly San Francisco…I just haven’t been a huge shorts fan. But when I put these super-cropped puppies on, they were decidedly the most flattering for my body shape, so I went with ’em! I couldn’t rock the boy short – they just felt frumpy on me. I guess you ought to flaunt it while you got it, right?!

The key to feeling comfortable with this look was covering up up top. I firmly believe a girl can never have too many stripes in her closet and a good tee can always be dressed up. By throwing on my favorite oversized double-breasted blazer, I didn’t feel overexposed. By toting a structured clutch, a touch of gold jewelry and putting on a pair of clean and classic nude sandals, my shorts suddenly felt more sophisticated and ready for primetime.

I was also pleased to discover that denim shorts can be highly versatile. A tank and sandals is all you need for the beach. Sneakers, t-shirt and hat and you’re ready for an afternoon at the baseball park. I’d switch out my blazer for a leather jacket and a Celine-inspired heel to take this look from day to date night!

Be sure to check out Casey, Hilary, Jen, Sara, and of course, the masterminds of this whole operation, Kat & Em’s, takes on the denim short. I’m quite certain you’ll find more than one look to love!

PS: Did you like this series? Are you interested in seeing more ways to wear some of your favorite fashions? I’m thinking of bringing something like this back to the blog on a more regular basis if you do!

It’s back, the second edition of Styling Your Staples! You remember this, right? Our new series in which seven stellar style bloggers put their touch on the pieces every woman should have in their wardrobe.

Second up on our task list was to put our spin on the classic White Oxford Shirt! Once again, I’m loving all the major style inspiration everyone provided.
Apartment-34-Style-Your-Staples-CollageIMG_1038

I’m a huge fan of the Oxford shirt. Putting on an Oxford is one of the easiest ways to feel immediately “dressed up” no matter what you pair it with. I tend to put a menswear-inspired spin on mine. In fact, I usually wear a men’s oxford {the one I have on is from the Gap!}. I just love that loose, boxy style. It’s simple and clean, perfect for a day at the office or an afternoon about town. Apartment-34-Style-Your-Staples-Oxford1Apartment-34-Style-Your-Staples-Oxford-3

Jenna Lyons was recently quoted as saying there’s nothing she despises more than uniform dressing. I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to politely disagree with Ms. Lyons on this one, {who in fact, I would also assert, rocks a pretty uniform style}.

No one likes to labor over the “what should I wear” decision and having a bit of a “uniform” can come in rather handy! Thankfully, there’s a no-brainer option that’ll keep you looking tres chic as we round the corner toward summer – the modern suit. I’m currently loving Jenni Kayne’s interpretation.

Monday-Work-Wear-Jenni-Kayne-Apartment-34-4 Monday-Work-Wear-Apartment-34-Jenni-Kayne-3 Monday-Work-Wear-Apartment-34-Jenni-Kayne-2

Gone are the days of stuffy suiting. Jenni Kayne’s version feels fun and flirty rather than drab. The tomboy tailoring is flattering, the skirts and shorts options are fresh and the cropped pant lets you play with virtually any shoe option. You could choose a brogue or an ultra high sandal. The poppy color palette also gives a nice nod to the {never-ending!} neon trend.

The best thing about buying a matched suit is that you don’t have to keep the pieces together! You’ve now added a top and bottom that you can mix and match with everything else in your closet, from a tee and trainers on the weekend, to a dress and a great pump for another work wear ensemble. You’ve suddenly grown your wardrobe exponentially! You gotta love that.

Here’s how you can get your money’s worth out of a matched suit.suitpicfinal

Even though the temperatures are warming, that doesn’t mean you have to compromise sophisticated style. You can still look cool while staying cool! The Spring 2013 collection from Adam Lippes is a prime example.

The beyond-chic combinations of separates; from skirts to trousers to jackets, is uniform dressing at its best. One designer; one entire wardrobe. Done and done! It doesn’t get better, or easier, than these beautifully chic work wear looks.

The first is the simple silhouettes. Close to the body, no bells and whistles required. These are classic pieces at their best.

The second is the pop of color with each shoe. It’s the perfect way to give a nod to the season’s trends without over-investing in trendy pieces. Those baby-blue suede pumps? Swoon!

Finally, I love the below the knee lengths of all of Adam’s ensembles. Hems that hit from just below to the knee to the ankle no longer feel dowdy. Instead they feel fresh, fashion-forward and even daring! A mini is so yesterday.

Today you’re getting a workwear double whammy. We’re tackling spring’s latest fashion and make-up trend! I hope you find them as inspiring and wearable as I do. So let’s dive in.

This spring the definition of “sexy” is giving way to subtle sophistication and I couldn’t be happier about it. Long a fan of more androgynous dressing, I find a real power and steely confidence in these looks. I think this quote from a T Magazine article I read over the weekend says it best:

“There is a a sweet poetry in clothes that are womanly without being sexually provocative.”

Amen to that.

I’m loving this editorial from Vogue China, as it completely epitomizes that sentiment. These looks also couldn’t be better suited {excuse my pun}, for the office!

These styles exude a boyish charm, but also a chic, sophisticated edge. You can break these ensembles down into three keys to creating this effect:

One: Finding the perfect fit. You want a crispness to your buttoned up shirt and snug fit to your boy-style blazer, but a nice slouch to your trouser.

Two: Fabric makes a difference. Texture and quality make this style of dressing deceptively simple. This isn’t about raiding the men’s shelf at the Gap. Instead, look for pieces that are designed for a woman’s body. You’re going to find a lot of silk trousers,  blazers in thick creamy cashmeres and strong cotton twills. Thankfully, these are classic basics that will stick around for years to come, so an investment is advised.

Three: The oxford loafer is king for spring. I long avoided them, but have suddenly found myself gravitating to them like there’s no tomorrow. Especially the d’orsay variety. My favorite local san francisco shoe designer also has a killer pair here.

Bonus point: Have a bit of fun! As much as I idolize Diane Keaton’s style, I’m not sure I could ever get away with wearing a bowler hat, but I’d sure have a ball trying!

Now, another significant part of putting together a killer look is how you decide to dress your face! A self-professed make-up dork, I’m super excited to see clean, simple make-up accompanying the sophisticated spring style. This is something I can handle. I think.

Looking at the examples of spring’s neutral face below, I know this is more complicated than it looks, so I’ve called in some reinforcements to help us out!

Thankfully, my friend and make-up artist extraordinaire,  Erin Dudley, shared her top tips and must-have products with me! Here are the suggestions I made sure to write down {and I recommend you do too!}:

One: A fresh, clean face begins with beautiful skin. I recommend exfoliating 2-3 days a week with an enzyme or scrub like ExfoliKate by Kate Somerville or the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel by Dr. Dennis Gross. ExfoliKate actually doubles as a facial mask so you not only resurface your skin but you treat it as well. The patented, two-step Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel evens out the skintone and texture, restores a youthful glow with alpha hydroxy acid and anti-aging boosters for accelerated results. If you are up for a splurge, the Clarisonic is a wonderful way to resurface your skin. This hand-held device cleans your skin six times deeper than hands alone and is safe to use every day. Have sensitive or acne prone skin? No problem! There are brush heads that are specific to your skin type.  It’s also a Dr. Oz and Oprah Winfrey recommended product!

Two: This spring is all about complexion and that “lit from within” radiance. The Optimal Brightening Concentrate by NARS is my secret item I love to use to cure lack-luster skin. Use it like a serum under your moisturizer. NARS’ exclusive Light Reflecting Complex and multi-action vitamin C clarifies the skin as well as works long-term to lighten dark spots and help reverse the signs of aging. It’s opalescent sheen gives you that instant luminescence.

Three: I am a fan of tinted moisturizer because it lets your skin shine through for a natural finish. I am obsessed with NARS’ Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer. Francois Nars said,  “Foundation is the key to modern makeup. By balancing color without masking, skin looks flawless and healthy. Nars is about translucent looking skin.” This oil free, sun protecting product improves your skin as you wear it, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation in just four weeks!

Four: A strong brow helps give structure to the face and frames the eye area. A bolder brow does not mean overgrown. I definitely suggest cleaning them up either with a brow artist or just tweezing any extra hairs between the eyes or on temples yourself. Anastasia Beverly Hills makes the best products for a flawless, full brow. I love the shade selection because they naturally fill in your brow without being too warm or dark. The stencils are a useful tool you can use to help guide the shape. New to Anastasia? The Brow Genius Kit is a good introduction to the line.

Five: A soft, neutral lip for Spring is the perfect way to keep you looking fresh and bright. I love Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Lip Colors. All the shades are very wearable and the emollient texture lasts all day long. The NARS Multiple stick is also a go-to, multi-use product of mine that gives your basic blank canvas a multi-dimensional quality.  Fave tip -> To complete your look in 2 minutes, apply the same product to your eyes and cheeks.

Got all that? No worries – consider this week’s Get the Look as your ultimate cheat sheet for what I’m deeming “Spring-Chic” style!

Here’s to simply fabulous week!

fashion editorial photographed by Lincoln Pilcher for Vogue China // make-up images photographed by Nina Westervelt for T Magazine

Are you as big of a sucker for a stellar vintage find as I am? Do you feel as daunted on where to find them as I sometimes do?! Thankfully, One King’s Lane has come to our rescue once again. They’ve lined up another who’s who of design bloggers to cherry pick their favorite pieces, all available to us with a single click, rather than hours of scouring flea markets. Love that.

Only 24 hours into this week’s OKL Design Bloggers Tag Sale and the thing is almost entirely sold out, but there are a few jems still available. I shouldn’t have expected anything less given that we’re shopping selections from Jon of Happy Mundane,  House of Brinson and Because It’s Awesome! This is some seriously fabulous taste people.

While the home accessories in this sale have been flying off the shelves, you can still snag those amazing mid-century dining chairs, but only if you beat me to ’em!

Congrats to all the bloggers included in the tag sale. Thank you for making my resourcing that much easier.

Is there anything you have your eye one? And do you have any other sources for great one of a kind finds? I’d love to build my list!

PS: I’m also swooning over Aerin Lauder’s Vintage sale, and not just because I desperately covet how she spells our name!
