I used to pride myself on being able to put together a good outfit. But the throes of early motherhood and the fact that no two days in my world ever look the same have damped my old fashionista ways. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love a good look. It just needs to be accomplished extremely quickly and with little to no thought. The best way to do that? A major statement making piece. Just one piece of flair can turn your basics into a head turning look.

The gift guide below is intended for those statement-loving ladies in your life. But it also might secretly be my personal wishlist. I guess secret’s out now!

1. A Major Earring Moment. Jewelry is one of the easiest ways to sass up any look. I’d love to pair these Ariel Gordon double hoops (they’re hollow so they’re not heavy!) with my new favorite black turtleneck,  jeans and a cute kitten heel.

2. Fuzzy Feet. The furry shoe, people. It’s a thing. It took awhile to grow on me, but now I’m really into them.

3. Hat Head. Throw on a good hat and you look like you tried. When in fact it’s exactly the opposite! Any hat by Janessa Leone is sure to do the trick.

4. A Shapely Tote. While the It Bag craze has died down, a unique bag is always a good look.

5. Cook Kicks. If the effort to wear heels is going to made, they might as well be really dang good looking. These playful geometric suede pumps are perfect foil to a timeless holiday dress.

6. Top it Off. When in doubt, a coat will make any outfit look polished. This belted houndstooth option is a classic in itself.

7. Totes Adorbs. Because a girl can never have too many bags this little tote is a perfect way to switch things up.

8. Sweet Sweater. I love the feminine shoulder detail on this darling chocolate brown cardigan.

SHOP ALL GIFT GUIDES HERE

Alright friends, how’s that Christmas shopping going?? Assuming many of you are as behind as I am, I thought I’d dive into the gift guides in earnest this week. So you’ll being getting a daily dose of shopping ideas each morning, along with the day’s regular post each afternoon as well. Don’t worry, these guides are helping me too. They’re forcing me to track down unique pieces for everyone on my list! Oh and I’d love to know what gift guides you would find most helpful. For the kiddos? The guys? In-laws?? I definitely want to offer whatever helps the most.

I’m kicking things off with one of my personal favorites – guides for the design-loving cook. I’m certainly a sucker for any pretty kitchen gadget, so you might consider this a personal wishlist as much as it is a gift guide! Continue to scroll for eight deliciously gorgeous options.

Gift Guide for the Design-Loving Cook on apartment 34Gift Guide for the Design-Loving CookWhile it took me a really long time post kiddo to get back into cooking, I’m finally diving into new recipes, cooking family dinners, dreaming up recipes and loving every minute of it.I might even try my hand at baking this holiday season. But I am very particular about what comes into my kitchen. And these days you do not have to sacrifice form for function. Any one of the kitchen accuerumounts listed below would certainly help motivate me to keep on cooking. Or at least hang out in the kitchen and stare at my pretty tools while I await Thai takeout. No judgements.

1. The Perfect Whisk. While the handle on this whisk looks like faceted stone, it’s in fact made of easy to grip silicone!

2. Your Secret Weapon Spice. Za’atar is the perfect finishing touch for soups, salads, even sprinkled on yogurt or in your olive oil. Your guests will think you’re a genius.

3. A High Design Cast Iron.Everyone needs a good cast iron pan but who says it has to be big and bulky. This thin, sleek modern version does the job, beautifully.

4. When Spoon Meets Spatula. Multi-use tools are a must and this Spoonula can scoop. It can scrape. It can withstand 500 degree heat and cleans like a dream. Kick all those old sad spatulas good-bye.

5. An Above Average Bowl. A handmade stoneware bowl adds a touch of art to the kitchen.

6. Really Nice Rice. This traditional hagama rice cooker will ensure you get a perfect batch of rice each time. Or look perfect on your counter. Both are equally good reasons to need one.

7. Compost Trés Chic. Just because you compost can get kinda disgusting, that doesn’t mean it’s container should be. Finally a compost bin I wouldn’t mind sitting out on the counter.

8. The Fundamentals. Every home cook needs the proper set of tools. This set of seven offers the pieces you’ll reach for on the daily. But most importantly, each tool in this set is as good looking as it is useful.

Now that December is officially upon us, I’ve broken the seal on holiday decorating. Or should I say un-decorating. While I’ll never forsake a Christmas tree, there’s something I love about a truly minimal nod to the holiday season.

Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34

I’ve gone maximalist with my holiday decorating in the past with garlands, wreaths and flourishes a-plenty, but this year I’m going for an elegant, subtle, yet still festive, demarcation of the season. I think #thisoldvictorian calls for a significant level of restraint.

The secret is an extremely light hand. A cutting of pine here. A smattering of ornamentation there. Nothing to bright or ostentatious. This year I’m actually shirking all sparkle (save the tree) in favor of matte objects that hint at the holiday – rather than scream festive at the top of their lungs. Obviously a soothing neutral color palette is also a must. And candles. Candles everywhere.

I’m still debating the placement of a modern wreath and will maybe even consider adding one garland (in a dramatic, unexpected location – stay tuned), albeit a minimal one.

I have added many a gorgeous “holiday decorating” piece to my cart this weekend, so I thought I’d share my favorites with you. You’ll note there’s no color and hardly any sparkle in sight. But I’m loving it.

How about you?

I’ve long been a fan of Parachute. Their linen bedding is my go-to for those perfectly wrinkled, just the right amount of soft sheets. I love how easily you can mix and match their neutral color palette. Then Parachute launched a bath collection and I swooned over the super soft towels and comfy slippers. Their aesthetic is right in line with my love for the timeless and classic.

So I was crazy envious when Parachute opened their first physical stores in LA and then Portland. But finally, San Francisco’s time has come. Last week, Parachute opened a stunning new store in the heart of the Hayes Valley neighborhood and I’m thrilled to get to give you an exclusive tour.

Retail Therapy: Tour the New Parachute San Francisco

Parachute has that pseudo-Scandi, elevated eclecticism down to a science. A mix of textures, a few gorgeous ceramics and of course, that gorgeous wrap around sofa, featuring Parachute’s new print bolster pillow, had me at hello. The light continues to spill through the bright and airy space, inviting you in to peruse through Parachute’s bedding, tabletop and bath collections.

I’m curious if I can convince Parachute to start selling the gorgeous custom shelving upon which their collection of quilts and duvet inserts rest. I would love a shelving unit like this in my dining room!

This console setup is major entryway goals.

Did you know that Parachute now offers their own line of nontoxic laundry detergents? I’m eager to try them.

But I’m really loving the Parachute fall tabletop collection. The linen napkins are in deeply saturated – that ocre hue is calling my name. I see my Christmas table coming on.

If you’re looking to beautify your guest room, treat your own bed to an upgrade, or are simply looking for a lovely holiday gift, I strongly suggest popping down to Hayes Valley! I’ve included my top Parachute picks below.

If you’re new to San Francisco or unfamiliar with the neighborhood, Parachute also has a tour of the area’s best gems on their blogBe sure to check it out.

Welcome to San Francisco Parachute!

This post is in partnership with Parachute Home. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. Thanks for supporting partnerships that have kept apartment 34’s doors open.

While I saw many a Christmas tree going up on Instagram this weekend, I am the first to admit that I’m not feeling entirely ready for the holiday season’s arrival. Anyone else with me??

our best cyber monday picks on apartment 34

So while I plan to slow play my decorating this week – my current design inspiration is above – I can’t deny that there are some pretty good deals happening around the web today.

So whether you’re shopping for someone on your gift list, or simply in the mood to take care of yourself (no judgments!), I thought I’d at least share the Cyber Monday deals from my favorite small brands and unique shops that I’m jumping on…while I also plot a modern minimalist way to decorate a staircase

I’d love any suggestions you might have!

If you were in line at store at 4am this morning, you’re doing it wrong! The best thing about Black Friday is now most of the best deals can be scooped up while binge-watching and eating leftovers (The Crown is my current favorite! What are you watching??). While Black Friday is supposed to kick off gift buying season – we all know it’s actually the best time to check a few things off your own personal wishlist – plus – we still have five weeks until Christmas. We’ll get to the gifts for others next week.

For now I’m filling my Black Friday cart to the brim. Here are just a few of the pieces atop my wishlist.

There’s a lot more where that came from on Pinterest too. For extra credit…

On Amazon you can save on everything from an Instant Pot & a Vitamix to a list of kitchen goodies curated by Domino editors. I like the cheese dome.

While I love me a good gift guide – and don’t worry – there are some good ones coming your way, this year I’m also making a major point to shop local for the holidays. You guys, this retail game is tough and while all things Target are well and good, there are small makers, artists, designers and visionaries that need and, I would argue, deserve our support.

So yes, I’ll still share my favorite Cyber Monday deals with you, I also want to make sure you learn about some bricks & mortar shops I adore.

Shop Small: Kamperett in San Francisco

Case in point, the new and totally stunning Kamperett showroom that recently opened in San Francisco’s Mission district. I’ve talked about Kamperett around here before. Designed & made right in the Bay Area, this clothing line creates ephemeral but strong pieces that have that perfect amount of edge. Every collection leaves me in awe and the the latest is no exception.

From jumpsuits to wrap dresses, high waisted culottes and a crazy good wool blazer, this is the wardrobe for a modern woman. Everything is simple and classic but also head turning. Dresses are made with sheer panels. Pants have the perfect cropped hem. The dresses have a gorgeous flow. And while much of the winer collection is in my favorite neutral color palette. they’ve peppered in yummy metallics and even a velvet in chartreuse! But everything has a timeless cut so these are the pieces you’ll love wearing now and will keep for years to come.

While I’ve always loved their clothes, it’s Kamperett’s minimalist showroom that has my heart swooning. Now you can go and play dress up in their beautiful light filled space that is both design studio and showroom, just in time for holiday party season! I promise there’s more than a dress or two you’re going to want to go home with.

I’m not hosting Thanksgiving this year (which I won’t lie, is a bit of a relief), but just because you’re not in charge of the turkey doesn’t mean you’re entirely off the hook. You certainly don’t want to show up to your friends’ or family’s home empty-handed.

Perhaps you’ll bring a side dish to contribute to the meal. And you certainly want to come with a hostess gift. But let’s talk about hostess gifts. Being hostess on the regular, I’ve received a lot of them – some quite better than others! Let’s start with a couple very clear don’ts. No one needs another scented candle. Ever. Same goes for themed tea towels or really any towel for that matter.

While a bottle of wine is always appreciated, it’s not really a gift. It usually just gets thrown into the mix during the holiday meal. I’m rounded up a few hostess gifts below that are meant for your hosts to truly enjoy long after their duties are complete. Some are things they might actually look back at and think of you year after year. Bonus!

So let’s take a look shall we? I hope this might give you a new idea that your hosts will truly appreciate.

If you have a cocktail loving host, a set of really chic whiskey rocks will come in handy – and certainly look cool.

Every host deserves some things to treat themselves – the foodie box from Simone LeBlanc features gourmet olive oil, chocolate, spices and some gorgeous serving utensils – something every good host covets.

Why not bring something for your hosts to enjoy long after guests leave. This chai lovers set will be a tasty treat to enjoy while setting up their tree.

I know I know, I said don’t gift wine, but Franciacorta is different. This special bottle of bubbles is little known & will be highly appreciated.

Even though you can overload on treats this time of year, Daily Harvest’s new plant-based gluten free ready to bake cookie dough is a sweet idea. I’m loving the coconut lemon option!

Flowers are often a typical gift, but trust me, a hostess already has her floral plan in place well before you arrive. Instead, why not show up with a beautiful bud vase with a bloom or two that could be added to an unexpected location like the bathroom?

While I shun a scented candle, stunning candlesticks are always a good idea.

Serve in style with beautifully crafted salad tongs.

Bring something truly unique and unexpected like a set of glass tumblers in a lovely autumnal color. I particularly love the olive or smoke options.

After looking at all things design nonstop for more than decade it can be a tad hard to find things that surprise anymore (the resurgence of terrazzo might be an outlier). Things can begin to look very same, same, same. But then I caught sight of the Surface Sconce created but multidisciplinary designer Henry Wilson in Sydney. Jaw. On. Floor.

design hunting: the surface sconce design hunting: the surface sconce design hunting: the surface sconce design hunting: the surface sconce

The surface sconce is both a sculptural masterpiece, but also a beautifully functional ambient light. Light glows between the piece’s two halves that have been cast from solid gunmetal. But really, it’s work of art. Each one is cast in small batches from natural, yet industrial materials, juxtaposing their hard composition with the sconce’s smooth, soft lines. Originally created in bronze, aluminum and brass, they are now available in natural stone. Oh the marble. Swoon.

design hunting: the surface sconce design hunting: the surface sconce design hunting: the surface sconce

While I really love the tabletop version, the design studio also creates a mountable sconce, seen here in the equally gorgeous Paddo Inn in Sydney.

design hunting: the surface sconce design hunting: the surface sconce design hunting: the surface sconce

The studio also makes amazing modern bookends, trays, handles and trivets. They’re chunky yet modern and totally luxurious, and beautiful. Sure you can find something cute at Target or CB2 – love you guys, mean it – but then there are pieces worth saving for. I think I officially need to add a surface sconce to the This Old Victorian. Time to return some of those Zara boxes.
