Has the thought of hosting a holiday party ever left you stressing? Same. It can be hard to figure out a good menu, a theme or have something to entertain guests.

Enter fondue! While it might feel like a 70’s throwback, fondue is actually a really fun party activity – and bonus for being ridiculously delicious. But the best part about fondue is its ease. All you need is that tasty cheese, accompanying nibbles, a glass (or two!) of wine and all your friends.

A Holiday Party Made Easy with Fondue on apartment 34

But let’s start at the beginning. The makings of a stunning holiday fondue party are in fact, incredibly simple.

It all begins with ready-made fondue from Emmi USA. I used their classic original fondue. Everything to make the perfect fondue is in the box – traditional Swiss cheeses, white wine and Kirsch brandy. Just open the pouch inside, heat and serve!

You can even save and reheat any leftover fondue, but if your party is anything like mine, there won’t be a drop to spare. In fact, ours went so quickly we didn’t even have to use our fondue burner, but if you plan to linger, you definitely want to keep the cheese warmed.

Next let’s talk about your dippers. Creating dipping boards was almost more fun than my usual cheese and charcuterie boards.

You can get really creative with what dippers you offer. From classic fruits like apples and pears to all kinds of veggies; carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, radishes (with the greens left on for natural dipping handle!), even some frisée. It all tastes great coated in gooey cheese.

I also like to offer a variety of breads. A good country rustic loaf, pretzel rolls and breadsticks are all fun and offer different textures. To up the protein factor, I also mixed in prosciutto and salami – they both go great with cheese so why not just dip it in some!

Some fresh citrus, grapes and herbed nuts are good additional nibbles. Their light and bright notes counter the richness of the cheese. Similarly, a good white wine (I love a vermentino or a dry riesling) but any light white or even a rosé’s acids, will help cut through the yummy cheese.

A Holiday Party Made Easy with Fondue on apartment 34

There are a few pieces of key fondue etiquette. Your dipper of choice should go into the pot and then actually onto your plate before eating. Your skewer is not your fork. Double dipping is a big no no. And apparently if you lose something in the fondue pot you’ve got to kiss your neighbor!

But really, the best part about a fondue party is how interactive and joyful it can be. The holiday season brings enough stress. It’s good to have a night for pure, delicious fun. Emmi Fondu can be found in the deli cheese area at your local grocer or specialty cheese shop. Find it near you at emmiusa.com/locator.

Self-care is all the rage these days. From meditation apps, to palo santo bundles popping up at Urban Outfitters, the tools used by the truly devout have made their way into the mainstream. But that’s certainly not a bad thing. We could all benefit from a little extra mindfulness. I’ve rounded up the must-have tools to help everyone on your list get their wellness on.

With just 8 days left until Christmas, make sure to check out our entire Gift Guide archive here. I’m off to shop myself!

I used to pride myself on being able to put together a good outfit. But the throes of early motherhood and the fact that no two days in my world ever look the same have damped my old fashionista ways. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love a good look. It just needs to be accomplished extremely quickly and with little to no thought. The best way to do that? A major statement making piece. Just one piece of flair can turn your basics into a head turning look.

The gift guide below is intended for those statement-loving ladies in your life. But it also might secretly be my personal wishlist. I guess secret’s out now!

1. A Major Earring Moment. Jewelry is one of the easiest ways to sass up any look. I’d love to pair these Ariel Gordon double hoops (they’re hollow so they’re not heavy!) with my new favorite black turtleneck,  jeans and a cute kitten heel.

2. Fuzzy Feet. The furry shoe, people. It’s a thing. It took awhile to grow on me, but now I’m really into them.

3. Hat Head. Throw on a good hat and you look like you tried. When in fact it’s exactly the opposite! Any hat by Janessa Leone is sure to do the trick.

4. A Shapely Tote. While the It Bag craze has died down, a unique bag is always a good look.

5. Cook Kicks. If the effort to wear heels is going to made, they might as well be really dang good looking. These playful geometric suede pumps are perfect foil to a timeless holiday dress.

6. Top it Off. When in doubt, a coat will make any outfit look polished. This belted houndstooth option is a classic in itself.

7. Totes Adorbs. Because a girl can never have too many bags this little tote is a perfect way to switch things up.

8. Sweet Sweater. I love the feminine shoulder detail on this darling chocolate brown cardigan.

Now that December is officially upon us, I’ve broken the seal on holiday decorating. Or should I say un-decorating. While I’ll never forsake a Christmas tree, there’s something I love about a truly minimal nod to the holiday season.

Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34Your Secret to Minimal Holiday Decorating on apartment 34

I’ve gone maximalist with my holiday decorating in the past with garlands, wreaths and flourishes a-plenty, but this year I’m going for an elegant, subtle, yet still festive, demarcation of the season. I think #thisoldvictorian calls for a significant level of restraint.

The secret is an extremely light hand. A cutting of pine here. A smattering of ornamentation there. Nothing to bright or ostentatious. This year I’m actually shirking all sparkle (save the tree) in favor of matte objects that hint at the holiday – rather than scream festive at the top of their lungs. Obviously a soothing neutral color palette is also a must. And candles. Candles everywhere.

I’m still debating the placement of a modern wreath and will maybe even consider adding one garland (in a dramatic, unexpected location – stay tuned), albeit a minimal one.

I have added many a gorgeous “holiday decorating” piece to my cart this weekend, so I thought I’d share my favorites with you. You’ll note there’s no color and hardly any sparkle in sight. But I’m loving it.

How about you?

While I saw many a Christmas tree going up on Instagram this weekend, I am the first to admit that I’m not feeling entirely ready for the holiday season’s arrival. Anyone else with me??

So while I plan to slow play my decorating this week – my current design inspiration is above – I can’t deny that there are some pretty good deals happening around the web today.

So whether you’re shopping for someone on your gift list, or simply in the mood to take care of yourself (no judgments!), I thought I’d at least share the Cyber Monday deals from my favorite small brands and unique shops that I’m jumping on…while I also plot a modern minimalist way to decorate a staircase

I’d love any suggestions you might have!

While our dining tables are likely to get all the decorating attention over the next couple of weeks (yesterday’s post being a prime example!), I would argue you can also make a major moment out of your mantel for Thanksgiving. But instead of piling it high with stuff that collects dust, this year might I suggest using your fireplace as a spot for displaying showstopper florals. The best part of this idea? You don’t have to move anything off your table to make way for the turkey at meal time.

I partnered with Marigold, one of my favorite San Francisco florists (with one of the cutest shops you’ve ever seen in the Mission!), to share three inspirational floral arrangements atop my fireplace to inspire you to make the most of your mantel this Thanksgiving. Let the pumpkin tchotchkes stay in tucked in the closet this year.

How to Dress Up Your Mantel for Thanksgiving with Flowers

I’m calling our first arrangement Refined Wabi-Sabi. It’s a light, bright and slightly off-kilter creation. It reminds me of the current season – things bursting forth in their final glory, but also starting to wither before winter arrives. The look is a little bit wild but still refined. I love how this arrangement has an architectural feel, arching both up and reaching down, drawing your eye across the entire fireplace. The color palette is both seasonal and fresh. You don’t tend to see a lot of white for Thanksgiving but I for one am really feeling it. The pops of orange and the seasonal branches place give it the fall season vibe.

The arrangement contains dendrobium orchids, bittersweet, honeysuckle vine, narcissus and flannel flower. The wild piece trailing to the right is dried viburnum greens and its branches are balanced by persimmons still on the stem.

How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34 How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34

But the true star of this show is the white lotus flowers. They come in tight little balls and you have to peel back the petals to create their star-like shape. Aren’t they stunning?!

Replicating an arrangement like at home does require a few florist tricks of the trade. To create a similar arrangement, start with a low bowl and use a flower frog and floral putty to anchor your stems. Begin by using your wild-reaching pieces to create a high and low shape. Then fill in the middle with your larger bulbs. To keep flowers alive longer, check water levels each day, and top off the vase when it gets low.

How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34

I’ve curated a tabletop look to go with each floral arrangement. A minimal, timeless and clean style pairs perfectly with this arrangement. You can shop the look below.

How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34

Our second arrangement is a lush, earthy, slightly rugged yet also feminine beauty. I’ve deemed her Forest Fairy. This is the harvest season embodied, but without a cliched vegetable in sight. I’m in love. Set lower and built to spread horizontally, this is a perfect arrangement for smaller rooms or spaces with lower ceilings.

How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34

I love the terra cotta, burnt sienna and warm brownish tones in this arrangement. It looks like you scooped up bits and bobs you found in the forest but also happened to pick a garden rose or two on the way home. The arrangement sits in a stone planter adding an additional grounded, earthy feel.

How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34

This arrangement contains euonymus pink variegated, rainpod tree, plumosa fern and is punctuated with peach garden roses, french marigolds and chrysanthemums.

To recreate this look, use a long low vase filling it with chicken wire and taped off with bull tape to create the structure you need for your arrangement’s shape. Choose foliage with natural arching shapes and use seasonal fall flowers like chrysanthemums and marigolds which are also long-lasting. Add in dried elements like the rainpod tree or bunny tail to create texture.

I am feeling this warm and woodsy tabel inspiration. Are you?

How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34

Our final look is for all you minimalists out there. It is simple, timeless and classic. I’ve deemed her the Modern Fall Classic. Towering branches wonderfully highlight high ceilings if you’re blessed with such things – as This Old Victorian is.

But the best part about this arrangement? There are literally no floral skills required to recreate this yourself. You don’t have to have a flower market nearby. You don’t even need to go to a store. Simply head out into your backyard, take a stroll through your neighborhood or maybe walk through local wild area with your clippers in hand! You can forage whatever catches your eye.

How to Dress Up Your Mantel with Flowers for Thanksgiving on apartment34

With my well-documented love for wine country, it seemed only fitting to create this minimalist look with grapevine, accented by the orange berries of bittersweet. They offer a classic Thanksgiving color palette and lovely autumnal feel.

To replicate this kind of simple yet impactful fireplace display, use glass cylinder vases and fill with fall foliage or reaching branches. Change the water daily so your vases stay looking fresh and your branches live longer.

A table that mixes modern and rustic elements will accompany your branches perfectly!

I so hope you have found a little inspiration for your own holiday decorating with these ideas. It can be so easy to stress out about making everything picture perfect for Thanksgiving, but I like to flip the stress on its head and instead embrace the opportunity to get creative and simply have fun.

Because that’s what this time of year should truly be about.
