While I was trying to stay offline as much as possible during these waning days of 2015, I couldn’t help but look back at the past year and take a little stock. It’s been quite a momentous 365 days – major {never-ending}home renovations, fantastic travels, and oh yeah, I had a baby! And I’d like to think there was a decent post or two in there as well.

In all seriousness, scrolling back through our work this year it’s pretty amazing to think about where this little space has become in the course of its existence. Nearly nine years and counting. There are certainly a lot of blogger babes {and a guy or two of course} who do all of this much better than I, but I so love our little corner of the internet and the privilege of getting to create with an awesome team. Here are some of the highlights.

2015 started on a high note with this beautiful floral garland balloon DIY that we dreamed up with one of our favorite florists, Natasha Kolenko. It wasn’t easy transporting the giant 3-foot balloons to our shoot location. In fact, with torrential downpour and insanely high winds, Bianca almost blew away. But perseverance makes perfection and we were floating on cloud nine when we saw the results of our efforts!

We kept the sweet life going with this mouth watering ice cream cookie sandwich recipe. Things got messy as we raced against the clock to get the shots we needed – working with melting objects definitely ain’t easy. Not to mention, we “had” to sacrifice our figures {ok, I was 39 weeks pregnant at the time} for some taste testing, but the final images from photographer Aubrie Pick are some of our favorites from the entire year!

Just before I popped out the kid, the team put in as many jetsetting miles as possible. But nothing beat the beautiful oasis of the Four Seasons Biltmore Santa Barbara where I babymooned my butt off. The trip was a magical retreat filled with scrumptious meals, hours of relaxation {by the hotel’s insanely gorgeous pool and beach!} and of course, a heavenly spa day.

APT_34_BILTMORE_1.23.15_173

With little time to go, the loft revealed another one of its many tricks: reinventing itself. We were able to transform the space yet again to make way for baby. The team office sadly had to go, but look what came out of its farewell – a calming yet striking black and white master bedroom-nursery that everyone quickly fell in love with!

Oh and speaking of falling in love, Carter Joseph was born, making his debut into the world at 22 inches and 8.2 lbs on April 9. He is by far the best of moment of 2015!!

With baby Carter came lots of changes, including yes, reimagining our living room for the… tenth time?? Out went the small choking hazards and in came cozy textures, lots of layers and big statement pieces, like theEmily Jeffords art piece from Minted above the mantel. The baby proof living room is serene and sophisticated – exactly the environment one craves with a newborn at home. When it looks like this. Which is a bit rare these days.

Of course, we came across some epic blogs this year as well. They always inspire to up my game. Our top 3? A clean-eating food blog that’ll blow your mind: Tasty Plan. A lifestyle blog, No Home Without You, that is so cute and full of inspiration you’ll never want to leave the site. And a design blog, Milo and Mitzy, that’ll fulfill any decor lover’s obsession forever.

Middle of the night feedings and no sleep also meant there was a lot of hours spent on Instagram. It’s an addiction and we’re ok with that. We discovered a ton of new Instagram accounts to obsess over this year. If you haven’t followed them yet, here are our top six must-follows: @juleytl @joshuaraymund @trishates @frostyphoto @housetweaking @murlifestyle, but you can see our running list here.

And since cold weather was late this year, we took advantage of the Bay Area Indian Summer and toasted to good times with girlfriends with this giant cheese board and some Aperol spritzes. It was a simple idea with a dramatic impact that we will most certainly do again and again. Because we’ll never say no to sitting outdoors with friends and catching up over cheese and cocktails!

And then there’s our house. We’ve been remodeling the 150 year old beaut for so long now I’m sure it feels redundant at this point, but this fall we started to see some real progress. We’ve finalized a lot of our design decisions – paint colors, lighting, tile. And finally the finish work is underway. That means it’s starting to look like a livable house. Woot!

apt34thisoldvictorian

You can expect progress posts to be a lot more frequent in the new year. And we might even move in pretty dang soon. I’m not going to say a date so I don’t jinx it but if the construction gods are on our side, it should be sooner rather than later. Then a whole new world of decisions are going to open up as I start step two – actually furnishing the whole dang place! I cannot WAIT to start that design process – and to share it with all of you of course.

I never intended 2015 to be quite so jam-packed, but it’s hard to complain when so many positive things come your way in one year. 2015 was also a big year of transition and change – personally – professionally. But with change comes opportunity; opportunity to try new things. To change direction. To uncover possibilities that you may never have otherwise considered. To have options is a gift in itself.

So while I don’t know exactly what 2016 is going to look like for me, or for this blog if I’m going to be perfectly honest with you, I’m excited to start 2016 fresh. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose. That’s the saying right?!

In fact, you might see a VERY fresh start here very soon.

Happy New Year!

Just before the holiday, we shared the recipe for the Apartment 34 Sparkler – our 2015 signature cocktail. It’s a pretty fantastic little sip if we do say so ourselves. But if a single signature drink isn’t your thing, I’ve got another option for you to have in your arsenal for New Year’s Eve. Or Tuesdays.

Whatever floats your boat.

Someone asked me today if I was ready for Christmas. My response? Absolutely not. Note even close. Between work, babies, remodels and general attempts at sanity, there is not a Christmas decoration to be found in my house nor a wrapped present – let alone a purchased one. But there’s 72 hours left. No worries. No worries at all.

Express shipping, will be my new BFF. And since I’ve been scouring the interwebs for last second gift genius, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite finds with you.

Tis the season to cozy up, right? What better way to do that than under a seriously stylish quilt? I was smitten with boutique quilt makers Louise Gray on sight. Seriously modern design applied with an artisan touch? Yes and Yes. They describe their pieces as “a choice and as an investment” and I dig it.

I also guessed there are many fellow Christmas procrastinators out there who could use a helping hand!

No matter how busy the holiday season gets, there’s one thing I never skip – creating a festive bar and a great signature cocktail recipe to celebrate the season. And this year, mama needs her cocktail more than ever! So I’ve partnered with Absolut and used their stunning limited edition Electrik bottle (featuring the same Absolut Original Vodka we all know and love) as inspiration to kick my holiday bar up a notch. This vodka cocktail recipe is going to be in rotation long past the holiday season.

AP34 x Absolut

The look is all about a new mix of metallics. Adding bold shots of silver and hints of sparkle feels fresh and full of energy. The silver accents really pop when juxtaposed with the sea of gold and brass the design world has been floating in. For this year’s bar cart, we stuck with an edited color palette to ground the metallics. Black candle holders, smokey black tumblers and a few noir accents are just the bit of edgy glam I crave. And the festive addition of a eucalyptus garland accented with black berries feels chic and uber modern but still totally festive. It certainly makes me want to get the party started!

And then there’s my signature cocktail! I knew I had to immediately turn to my resident libation expert Ashley. She’s killing it with her recently launched venture Craft & Cocktails. I’m in love with this recipe. Served in an updated take on stemware, drizzled in glitter and garnished with silver leaf, any holiday night out is guaranteed to have a stunning start.

THE APARTMENT 34 SPARKLER

Ingredients

2 oz Absolut Original Vodka
4 oz sparkling wine
3/4 oz grapefruit rosemary oleo saccharum (recipe below)
1/4 ounce lemon juice
Rosemary sprig garnish
Edible silver leaf garnish

Directions
Make the oleo saccharum at least 4 hours before. With a lemon slice, run it around a champagne flute. Roll it over a sheet of silver leaf or use a clean paintbrush to dab it on. In a shaker with ice, mix oleo saccharum, vodka and lemon juice for 10 seconds. Strain into a glass and add the champagne. Stir, garnish with rosemary sprig and enjoy.

Grapefruit Rosemary Oleo Saccharum (citrus oil syrup)
6 grapefruit, peels only
9 oz sugar
2 stalks rosemary, destemmed

Peel grapefruits, reserving fruit and juice for other cocktails. Be careful not to remove too much of the white pith or it will make the syrup bitter. Place peels in a bowl along with rosemary. Pour sugar over and mix with your hands or muddle to start breaking down the sugar. Let this sit for 4 hours or overnight. You will know it is ready when all of the sugar has been dissolved by the citrus and herb oils. Strain and place in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

*the silver leaf is delicate and will stick to just about anything, so handle it gently. One sheet is good to garnishing 2-3 glasses.

**oleo saccharum is simply an oil sugar syrup. It’s easier than a simple syrup because it doesn’t require cooking. It adds not only a nice texture to a drink, but the oils enhance the citrus flavor without diluting with too much juice.

As a new mom, it can be a little hard to motivate when I look at my jam packed holiday calendar, but the Apartment 34 Sparkler makes me want to put on my dangly earrings, slip into some killer heels and paint the town. No one has to know that I might be back in bed by 10pm :P.

I hope you raise the energy of your holiday nights this season!

The heart of entertaining season is upon us, so I thought I’d go hot and heavy with tips, tricks and recipes this week! If you’re planning on hosting over the holidays I know feeding the crowds can be stressful. We’ve been trying to finalize our Christmas menu in the hopes of creating some fun new traditions for Carter to enjoy every year. We’re blending a little bit of the husband’s childhood with mine as well as adding in a few new ideas for good measure.

This Glazed Beet Salad recipe cooked up by our food contributor Zoe is definitely going to make the Christmas dinner cut. More interesting than standard roasted vegetables, but more festive than a plain old bowl of greens, I think this will be a delicious way to get veggies on our holiday table. I’ll just have to put down a tarp – red beet juice + baby is likely to be a dangerous combination. I’ll be sure to share the results with you on Snapchat!

apt34_beetsalad_recipe

RECIPE: Glazed Beet Salad (Serves 4 as a side)

INGREDIENTS:
5 beets with greens (mixture of golden and red)
1 bunch Swiss chard
3 Tbsp butter
1 shallot
Salt
Fresh black pepper
4 Tbsp Muscadet
2 Tbsp water
4 Tbsp crumbled goat cheese (optional)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Scrub and peel the beets. Remove the greens and chop coarsely. Set the greens aside in a large prep bowl. Slice beets into 1/4 inch rounds.

2. Remove the ribs from the swiss chard and coarsely chop and toss into bowl with the beet greens.

3. In a large sautee pan, melt butter and sautee shallots.

4. Add beet rounds to the shallot butter mixture. Crack pepper over the beets and a pinch of salt. Reduce heat and sautee beets, turning over to ensure even cooking.

5. About 15 minutes later when beets are begnning to glaze and become tender, add greens and chard. Sautee for about 5 minutes, then add wine and cover. Cook until greens are wilted, allow liquid to be mostly absorbed into greens, adjust seasonings.

6. Scoop greens and beets into a low shallow bowl. Garnish with a goat cheese crumbles and black pepper.

Enjoy!

Confession, it’s been a little hard for me to get into the festive spirit this year. It feels like it came on so fast. I really can’t fathom setting foot in a mall. Even online shopping has a lost  some of its luster. I think I’m on a bit of stuff overload.

What I’m really craving this year is time. Time to reconnect with friends and family. Time to have those long girl-talks. Time to reminisce with my siblings. I didn’t appreciate the amount of freedom I had with the hours in my day pre-baby. It’s a very different world when you’ve got feedings, naps and bedtimes to adhere to. Your life is broken up into two or four-hour chunks. And conversations lose a bit of their depth when you’re trying to keep tiny fingers out of light sockets. So instead of gifting tchotckes, candles or the like, this year I’m planning on booking good old-fashioned quality time with the people I care about most. A few sweet treats and a really good coffee recipe is all you need.

apt34 coffee recipe apt34 coffee recipe a;t34 coffee recipe apt34 coffee recipeapt34 coffee recipe

I got started this past weekend, enjoying a catch up sesh with my girl Caitlin Flemming of Sacramento Street. She and I actually met through blogging, coming on six years ago now and it’s amazing to see where our lives have taken us. In that time we’ve both gotten married (a week apart), had babies (four months apart), built carriers and ended up living in the same city! Feel pretty damn lucky about that.

A couple of hours over the best pastry San Francisco has to offer (from here if you’re wondering) and a delicious cup of coffee fill the soul more than anything that comes wrapped in a bow.

But I couldn’t help but make our catch-up date a little holiday-y. The easiest way to do that is with a delicious coffee recipe you can make at home. All I needed was my Nespresso and a few extra ingredients to feel like my own personal barista so of course I had to share it with you. I think I’m going to be making this recipe well into the new year!

NESPRESSO SPICY GOURMANDISE COFFEE

Ingredients
1 Swiss Chocolate Nespresso capsule
3/4 C heavy cream, cold
3T sugar
1t ground cinnamon
half of 1/8t cayenne
1 cinnamon stick

Directions
For the spiced cream: in a bowl combine cream, sugar, cinnamon and cayenne; whisk until firm and set aside to chill.

For the coffee: add cinnamon stick to your VertuoLine Glass and brew your capsule of Swiss Chocolate Coffee over cinnamon stick. Top coffee with spiced cream & enjoy!

This post was created in connection with my appointment as a Nespresso “A Cup Above” participant. Thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. Thanks for supporting collaborations that have kept Apartment 34’s doors open.

There are 18 sleeps until Christmas. Have you decorated yet?? I’ve had a hard time figuring out how to deck our halls with a crawling 8-month old puttering around. Our oversized Christmas tree doesn’t really seem practical. It would eat up half of Carter’s crawling space. And since he’s discovered a love of cords I’m not really willing to add even more electrical hazards to the mix. So I’m considering an alternative this year – a modern update on the Christmas wreath with an easy wreath DIY.

Wall-mounted Christmas decor isn’t new. We actually shared an adorable Christmas Tree DIY last year, but I’m in the mood for something a little different. A little modern. I’ve been seeing a lot of different wreath options pop up all over Pinterest, but I’m loving this asymmetrical version. Its simplicity gives it a cool, chic feel, but the use of olive branches lend a rustic touch.

medium_ED_v1.66_ATHENA_PUTNUM_wreath

The steps to create something like this are actually pretty simple.

STEP ONE: Cut standard 18-inch wire wreath frame in half, creating a crescent shape

STEP TWO: Gather small bunches of olive branches and overlay them down the wreath frame, securing them with wire. Move along the wreath frame with the branches all going in the same direction.

STEP THREE: Reverse the direction of your olive branch bundles for the last third of the wreath frame that you have left

STEP FOUR: Take a piece of silky ribbon and tie a bow around the empty spot where your branch stems meet.

STEP FIVE: Tie a long piece of twine to each end of the wreath frame for hanging.

I think this is one project I can actually pull off before Christmas Eve rolls around! For more innovative decorating ideas CLICK HERE.
