I am so excited to share one of my favorite home design stores in San Francisco – The Future Perfect. They were one of the many local spots I partnered with for my Sunset project. It was so hard to restrain myself from pulling every single piece in their stunning Sacramento Street shop. They have the most exquisite designs, sure to have you drooling over where to put them in your {dream} home! This is Retail Therapy at its finest.

The painted quartz rocks above, exclusive to the store, were one of the first things that caught my eye. The faceted edges and weight of these pieces make them such a statement – they had to make it into the final design! I tried desperately to get the solid brass chandelier in my office {obviously, it’s ah-mazing!}, but alas, they are custom. I ended up finding these pendants through their online store that were a huge hit though!

These mobiles have to be the most gorgeous ones I have ever seen. Delicate pieces of pottery and shells hang between brass and wooden circles, making them completely unique and each a one of a kind.

At first glance it’s hard to tell what these are, but they are exactly what I need for the loft! They are mirrored wall nobs that you can hang garments, jewelry or just scatter along the wall as beautiful reflective pieces of art. Seriously, gorgeous in person.

These japanese-designed brass bottle openers are still a favorite of mine and the petite silver spoons are picture perfect. I never realized I wanted a spoon collection until now!

Every vignette in The Future Perfect is spot on. I love the back of this bench paired with the long, tangly arms of the chandelier.

I seriously cannot get enough of this store. Every time I am in the area, I peek in just to get a dose of some of the most beautifully crafted pieces I have found in the city. If you’re ever in town, The Future Perfect is a must visit!

This month we are doing something that we’ve never done before on Tasty Tuesday! We are going into the kitchens of some of our favorite people and learning to cook a family recipe that is near and dear to their hearts. We thought it would be a great way to expand our horizons and learn how to use ingredients we don’t usually put in our grocery bag.

I’m even going to challenge myself to dust off my various internationally themed cookbooks and finally try some of the recipes inside {am I the only one who buys cookbooks just to stare at them?}!

We’re kicking off Cooking Out of Your Comfort Zone with one of my favorite San Francisco bloggers, Jeanne from Shop Sweet Things!

Tasty-Tuesday-Jeanne-Xo-Shrimp-2

Jeanne {and her husband!} are always cooking up something adventurous and yummy in the kitchen. With two busy little girls, Jeanne needs recipes that are quick and easy, but also packed with tons of flavor. Luckily for us, she’s sharing her family favorite: Spicy Sriracha Garlic Shrimp and Coconut Rice, served with Mango Basil Salsa on the side!

Inspired by her Chinese heritage the meal includes traditional Asian ingredients with a modern, mom on the go twist. Yes, I tried it, and yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds {and looks!}.

Tasty-Tuesday-Jeanne-IngredientsJeanne-Tasty-Tuesday-Tasty-Tuesday-Jeanne-Salsa

Recipe feeds 4 people:

Coconut Rice
1.5 cup of Jasmine rice
1 can of coconut milk
3/4 cup of water
1 pinch of salt

For best results, use a rice cooker to cook the rice for about 30 minutes. If you don’t have a rice cooker, use a saucepan. Combine all the ingredients and cook in reduce heat and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes or until rice is soft.

Mango Basil Salsa

2 mangos, peeled and finely diced
3 scallions, sliced
5-8 basil leaves, chopped
1 lime, juiced
salt & pepper

Combine all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. You can even make this one day in advance. {editor’s note: it’s great with tortilla chips too!}

Spicy Garlic Shrimp
1 pound of large shrimp (get the ones that are peeled and veins removed.)
6 garlic cloves
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
1 lime, juiced
1 tbsp olive oil
1.5 cup of water
1 teaspoon of Sriracha (or red chili sauce) to taste
salt & pepper

Chop the garlic into small chunks and mix in the water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add the shrimps and marinate for 20 minutes.

Strain the water from the shrimps and garlic. Add the lime juice, jalapeno, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in high heat in large saute pan. Add the shrimps and stir fry it for about 2 minutes or until the shrimps turn red. Mix in a teaspoon of Sriracha {or make it as spicy as you like!} and stir fry for another 30 sec. Add salt and pepper to taste.

I’m so excited to cook out of my comfort zone and try this recipe on my own. I’m upset at myself at how intimidated I was before to buy Sriracha sauce at the grocery store. On top of the fact that I never thought of making my own coconut rice {why didn’t I think of that?}. Both have such bright flavors and add such an exotic punch to a meal. You are going to be so surprised when you see how easy they are to work with. Luckily, I always have rice and coconut milk stocked, so no more plain-rice-days in this house!

I want to thank Jeanne so much for sharing the kitchen and one of her family recipes with us. I promise, it’s so easy, that I’ve committed it to memory, and it is now going to be my go to dish when guests come around. My goal? To impress them with my familiarity of cooking with such bold ingredients and serve them a dish they’ll want to lick off the plate!

Style-Your-Staples-ShortsOur Style Your Staples series has been such fun. We’ve looked at the Pencil Skirt, the Oxford Shirt, and now we’re back with the last installment: the Denim Short!

Yet again, all the ladies put their stylish spin on this summer must-have and now I want to give each and every one of their looks a go. But first, here’s how I tried my hand at working denim cut-offs, Apartment 34 style:

IMG_3411Shorts-Style-Your-Staples-6Shorts-Style-Your-Staples-4

I have to say, this assignment was my biggest styling challenge yet. Though I’m tall and obviously have long legs, I’ve never been a huge short-shorts wearer. I don’t know what it is – maybe being in my 30s, maybe living in slightly chilly San Francisco…I just haven’t been a huge shorts fan. But when I put these super-cropped puppies on, they were decidedly the most flattering for my body shape, so I went with ’em! I couldn’t rock the boy short – they just felt frumpy on me. I guess you ought to flaunt it while you got it, right?!

The key to feeling comfortable with this look was covering up up top. I firmly believe a girl can never have too many stripes in her closet and a good tee can always be dressed up. By throwing on my favorite oversized double-breasted blazer, I didn’t feel overexposed. By toting a structured clutch, a touch of gold jewelry and putting on a pair of clean and classic nude sandals, my shorts suddenly felt more sophisticated and ready for primetime.

I was also pleased to discover that denim shorts can be highly versatile. A tank and sandals is all you need for the beach. Sneakers, t-shirt and hat and you’re ready for an afternoon at the baseball park. I’d switch out my blazer for a leather jacket and a Celine-inspired heel to take this look from day to date night!

Be sure to check out Casey, Hilary, Jen, Sara, and of course, the masterminds of this whole operation, Kat & Em’s, takes on the denim short. I’m quite certain you’ll find more than one look to love!

PS: Did you like this series? Are you interested in seeing more ways to wear some of your favorite fashions? I’m thinking of bringing something like this back to the blog on a more regular basis if you do!

I have always been a fan of monochromatic interiors, particularly seen in a lot of Scandinavian design. I love the way that you can play with a singular palette by layering texture on texture. Of late, it seems like Pinterest has been on the same wave length – love for the monochromatic look is gaining ground!

Excited about the amount of Scandinavian inspired pins popping up, I rounded up some of my favorite interiors that have come across my feed for this edition of This is Very Pinteresting!

If you haven’t started a monochrome interiors Pinterest board, I strongly urge you to do so! You’d be surprised by how much a lack of “color” can inspire amazing design. If you have a board already, I’m dying to see it – please, do share. I think I have a couple of hours in between meetings this afternoon to drool over some fabulous pins!

While you’re there you can check out what inspires me on Pinterest here!

This week I’ve got another behind the scenes look into my Sunset Magazine Reimagined Home project for you! For this edition, we’re talking sourcing. It’s often one of the hardest parts of decorating, right? To whet your appetite, here are a few sneak peeks of some of our final finds!

Sunset-Project-Instagram-But let’s back up and discuss how I got there.

Finding that one perfect piece for your home can feel like a total needle in a haystack experience. Combing stores takes time and patience. The internet is such a vast and overwhelming place to find things. So where to start?!

The first step is setting parameters to help narrow down your search. To make it easier when shopping for my Sunset rooms, I kept three things in mind: our original room inspiration, scale and color palette. It is so easy to stray off your design path and lust over the next best idea. The key to success is to maintain focus. Eye on the prize my dears!!

Pinterest was also a big help here. As I mentioned during the presentations I gave during Celebration Weekend, Pinterest is a wonderful tool for discovery, inspiration and organization. I follow people on Pinterest with impeccable taste and they were often resources for some of my best finds. I also kept track of every source on room specific Pinterest boards. That way I never lost a single link. The boards also served as mini-lookbooks. I could browse each one to narrow down to the final selections.

This Ombre Console was one of the first pieces I discovered Pinterest. I love that it came from Etsy!! It drove the use of blue tones throughout the rest of my den.

Sunset-Sources-Revealed-Ombre-Console-Table

Overall, I kept accessorizing very minimal, so I really wanted each piece selected to make a huge statement on its own! One way to do this is to look for pieces with beautiful lines like the Hexagon Side Table and Oskar Chair. Each have a strong architectural feel.

Or, you can choose to do something in an oversized scale like we did with this Starburst Tray, White Clock, and one of my favorite finds, a Bear Print created by an artist I came across at the Brooklyn Flea Market! Each one added a ton of visual interest. Here are some of our favorite pieces that made the final cut!

Of course this isn’t everything I used in my rooms! I had the opportunity to work with some amazing designers who made or loaned awesome one-of-a-kind, unique, and vintage pieces. We’ll be taking you behind the scenes to some of the designers’ studios and into some gorgeous San Francisco store fronts over the coming weeks. I can’t wait to share them with you!

Stay tuned….

Have you guys heard of H&M’s high end brand, & Other Stories?! To say that I am obsessed is probably the understatement of the summer.

The most striking thing about & Other Stories are their editorials. They look like they could grace the pages of Vogue – absolutely stunning! I can’t get over their accessories. The bags and shoes are to die for.

The problem? It’s only available in the UK! I’m starting a petition for immediate shipping to the U.S. – who’s with me??

In the meantime, looks like a trip to London is definitely in order!
