Today we’re kicking things off with our latest sartorial obsession. We love that there’s a new kind of bag on the streets, runways and blogs these days. Reminiscent of those cherished elementary school memories, the backpack is having a MAJOR moment!

But now the carry-all is all grown up! You can find a backpack in every sophisticated shape, size and material. These babies are just about as far from our overstuffed Jansport as we can get! Whether you’re spending thousands {like The Row’s alligator design!}, or opting for something more affordable, you’re guaranteed to find a design that fits with your lifestyle.

A sleek, minimal and structured design is perfect for the creative type who might carry the latest issue of their favorite magazine and some notebooks for jotting down ideas on the go. The sporty woman can use those roomy pockets and straps for that extra change of gym clothes that never fit in her purse. And we’re confident office gals will ditch that boring, corporate briefcase once they see how much work they can fit into this modern design!

If you’re in a hurry, the backpack is the most trustworthy portable option. Throw it over one shoulder {like these uber cool blogger babes!} or carry it on both shoulders {in the more traditional form!}- either way, the backpack definitely pumps up an outfit!

The backpack {along with sneaks!} are a crucial accessory as a sporty wave continues to hit the fashion world. And we can’t complain about the adoration to all things casual {and comfy!}.

How do you feel? Should we pick up the backpack and embrace its casual coolness or should it be left back in our school days? — Victor

They say life is short. Sleep when you’re dead. You’re only young once. I think I’ve transitioned firmly into the other camp – where sleep is a rarefied and glorious thing that you seek like buried treasure! I’m actually hoping for fog in San Francisco this weekend – it’ll provide more of an excuse to hunker down under my comforter and never see the light of day! No judgments.

This weekend I’m hoping to reinvest in weekly traditions that have gone ignored – a trip to the Ferry Terminal farmers market, revisiting my collection of cookbooks for new recipe inspirations, enjoying a leisurely Sunday brunch and maybe even exploring an untapped corner of this city. As we creep up on three full years in San Francisco {can you believe it?!} this place really feels like home, but still new all at the same time. I hope it feels this way forever.

We did manage to hop around the interwebs quite a bit this week. If you somehow missed our office makeover update, do check it out.  We also created our first ever Apartment 34 Playlist for your listening pleasure! Here are nine other particularly fabulous things we don’t want you to miss.

Having the office done is Such. A. Relief. From day one, I set out to create a space that would really help get the team’s creative juices flowing. I wanted ideas to literally bounce off the white walls. But trying to stay minimal can be a bit tricky – design is very much in the details when every piece counts. And when you’re working on a budget making the perfect choices definitely took more time than expected!

But as promised, we’re breaking down some of those details today {and over the next couple of weeks!}, first focusing on the upgrades to the walls. We found affordable, simple and most importantly fun ways to really make the space feel brand new!

apartment-34-office-inspiration-boardinspiration-board

We spend the vast majority of our time glued to screens, so I really wanted to capture wall space for old school inspiration. I used to have boxes and boxes of magazine tears, people – that I moved cross country…twice!  As we worked on the redesign, we always kept our eyes peeled for new and interesting ways to display pieces of tangible, physical inspiration. That hunt became the source for our most economical DIY yet! Can you guess what it was??

office-mood-board

We’d been seeing metal grates pop up all over our fave Scandinavian blogs, so we decided to try and make one ourselves! A simple trip to the hardware store yielded the perfect large scale wire grating for $7! To take it a little beyond junk yard chic, we simply laid it down on some cardboard and spray painted it white. Now it simply hangs from picture hooks. We call it our modern pin board and we’re all obsessed.

The grate is the perfect solution for an awkward wall space that needs some visual interest {it hangs on this weird blank spot right before you enter the bathroom!}. It adds texture and interest all on its own, but we use it to hang styling ideas for upcoming shoots, odd knick knacks and our favorite art for a seriously cool 3-D statement!

apartment-34-team-officeinspiration-rack-apartment-34

Since half of the team is facing a wall when sitting at our new co-working desk {the now iconic Strut Table from Blu Dot, btw!}, we needed something inspiring to look at there too. Instead of doing a typical gallery wall, we loved the idea of creating a rotating inspiration shelf. With acrylic clipboards from Muji {they proved more economical than these gorgeous ones from Russel & Hazel!} and a simple picture rail, we have a chic and quickly interchangeable moodboard to display our most recent magazine musings!

apartment-34-office-paintingoffice-light-apartment-34

In our book, no office is complete without a bar and we wanted ours to be a highlight of the space! We started out by creating a black statement wall {painted with Flat Silhouette by Martha Stewart Living for The Home Depot}. Keeping with the minimal style, we floated a clean-lined Ikea console with white lacquer doors and Ikea-hacked it with a customized black surface {aka $10 black contact paper purchased on Amazon!} Then we brought in one major piece of artwork. This is an especially meaningful piece, as we commissioned our very own Editorial Director to make it! Bianca recently discovered this stunning hidden talent {you may remember the piece she did in her own living room here!} and her gorgeous abstract ink on canvas really brought the wall to life {inquire about your own piece here!}.

When it came to lighting, we didn’t have the luxury of installing a “major moment” over our new desk due to a concrete ceiling, so we figured out how to work with the tracking lighting that was already there. We used a simple custom brass pendant {made by studioPGRB!} to make a stunning, singular statement. We also added a monochromatic black wall sconce by OneFortyThree to instantly upgrade our lighting game!

apartment-34-office-art

Finally, we created a mini-gallery moment in our “creativity corner.” Still wanting to keep things as uncluttered as possible, we focused on four art pieces all with a similar color palette and gold frames. The two new ones are original works by fave artist Jennifer Ament and the last little detail is simply a hand-painted watercolor card that we slapped up, unframed, but it totally rounded out the moment. The fresh combo made us fall in love with our favorite art piece from the original design all over again – our Life Magazine image of Vegas showgirls playing chess backstage! J’adore.

That’s detail on just a few of our favorite mini moments around the office. We hope you can see how the simplest changes can have the biggest impact on a room. Next week we’ll break down the creativity corner, the supply closet {remember our most popular DIY to date!} and what’s on our prop shelves! Stay tuned.

If you’re a fan of some serious heat, then Palm Springs is the place for you right now- the weather is cookin.’ But as Karl the Fog blankets SF, we’re down for the heat. It’s perfect for lazy afternoons spent sipping mojitos, catching up on magazines and gossiping with your girlfriends. It certainly doesn’t help when everyone on our Instagram feed is hanging at the Parker or splurging at the Ace!

We’ve always wanted to take a team trip down south and while Greece was basically just yesterday, we were so inspired by Norm Architects’ new outdoor collection {their first available to the states!} that we might book a weekend getaway to the desert right now!

Norm-Architects-Design-Within-Reach-Apartment-34exterior-with-pool-apartment-34palm-springs-packing-list

The retro, laid-back vibe of the desert is the place to have a little fun when it comes to fashion. It’s hard not to dress the part in a one-piece bathing suit and {the much debated!Birkenstocks when you’re surrounded by gorgeous vintage finds and mid-century architecture. We love the idea of keeping things casual and breezy in dusty peaches {these sunnies are perfect!} and cool mint tones {heard so many good things about this beauty product!} to match the surroundings!

Palm trees and clay-colored sand are calling our names- before the valley hits the peak of sweltering summer, that is. One of the best things about living in California is we’re just an hour’s flight away from the ultra-hip destination…

So, who’s already dreaming about a weekend escape?! Anyone have any new Palm Springs hot spots they’d like to share? We’ll be taking notes!!

It’s not everyday that an incredibly well designed and gorgeous space opens up in most cities, let alone in the teeny tiny Northern California town of Healdsburg. You may have remembered spying our vist to ‘The ‘Burg’ on Instagram a few weeks back and while we were there, we certainly weren’t going to miss our opportunity to check out the much talked about open-space market/resaurant/coffee shop/bar/general awesome hangout, SHED!

apartment34-retailtherapy-healdsburg2healdsburg-shoppingthe-shed-healdsburgapartment34-retailtherapy-healdsburg

Word of Shed spread rapidly and it’s tempting us city dwellers to drive past the likes of Napa and Sonoma and take the extra 30 minutes it takes to get there! Focusing on quality artisan-made goods, Shed’s shelves are filled with tried and true pieces for your home and garden. It’s all the stuff that makes us swoon. Everything from artisanal brooms {yes they exist!} to oversized marble pestles and mortars can be found here. You can stock your pantry with locally made jams and gourmet olive oils as well as come home with something from the in-house larder! No matter what you’re in the market for, you definitely won’t leave empty handed- even if you do just walk away with some fresh blooms!

toast-shed-healdsburgcafe-healdsburg-california-apartment-34apartment34-retailtherapy-healdsburg7

In the middle of the market, you’ll also find a cafe to sit and enjoy a cup of jo, as well as some crave-worthy bites. We couldn’t get enough of their gorgeous toasts {we do love a good tartine afterall}! Goat cheese and pickled watermelon radish toast called our name, but the herbed artichoke toast made us go back for seconds. Yumm.

Our absolute favorite thing had to be Shed’s fermentation bar! Never heard of such a thing? We hadn’t either.

best-restaurants-in-healdsburgshed-healdsburg-apartment-34

Turns out, it’s a bar that serves all kinds of naturally cultured and fermented drinks that are made in-house or by local brewers. Kombucha, Kefir, natural sodas and beers are on tap, as well as local wines. And you can even have the bartender mix up a house-made Shrub. What’s a Shrub you ask? Let us explain.

Shrubs are drinks that actually date back to the 17th century. They’re made by combining fermented vinegar with fruit and sparkling water. There’s a reason they’ve stayed around this long- they’re a refreshing treat in your mouth! They’re sweet-tart, effervescent and really quite lovely. We ordered the Carrot + Coriander and the Grapefruit Shrub and could have easily kept on going through the entire menu!

If you’re making your way up to wine country this summer, take a well worth it detour to Shed! Who’s already snuck away from the city and enjoyed a glass of wine there? Better question, who’s ready to do it again?! We are!

So today, I have a confession to make. I have a big, nasty, raging bad habit. But the first step to self-improvement is admitting you have a problem, right? So here’ goes: One of my longest running issues is that I never, ever slow down. It’s always go go go, one more event, on top of one more project, on top of one more to-do with no end in sight! I was able to get away with that modus operandi through my 20’s no problem, but it’s really starting to catch up with me these days.

I’ve realized two critical things. Your body does age. You do get tired. Things hurt that never used to {you know… those things you made fun of your parents for complaining about} and really, I’m not that old.  But most importantly, I’ve realized it’s also not a great way for my soul to live. A life without a pause button means you leave a lot of people in your dust. That approach makes it challenging to extend the time and attention meaningful relationships deserve. So as we head into summer, I’ve come up with a personal challenge that I thought I’d share with you: to take advantage of the naturally more mellow season and dedicate time to really chilling out. And what better way than with a comfy dress & some good tunes?!

what I’m wearing: Old Navy Maxi Dress // Bang & Oulfsen Headphones // Tokyo Bay Watch similar // Sweet & Spark vintage bracelets // Dolce Vita Sandals // Make Up Forever Lip Gloss in Frozen Pink

Isn’t it amazing how the perfect song can completely change your mood? And while I love good tunes {I was even a hardcore festival-goer back in the day}, I too often forget to turn them on! So to help break up my usual agenda of go-go-go, for the next couple of months I’m setting aside Sunday afternoons for dedicated relaxation. With a super comfy maxi dress {seriously, I think I found my official weekend uniform no matter what I’m up to!}, maybe a pile full of magazines {or even a book!} and most importantly open-ended time, I’m hoping I can break my always-in-a-rush cycle.

To help me – and you! – get into a good health grove, we put together a slowdown for summer soundtrack. Have you found your signature summer song yet? Hopefully, one of these might help you relax and unwind so by the time Fall rolls around we’ll all be cool as cucumbers together!

I couldn’t think of a better way to welcome the first day of summer then heading to LA! That’s right, I’m in the land of sun, surf and palm trees – albeit only briefly. While I have to dash to soak up some warm Cali vitamin D and enjoy my 24 hour adventure in LaLa land {which I’ll be sharing here soon!!}, I just had to pop in to say happy weekend, happy summer and offer up some fabulous links too. It is the longest day of the year afterall – you have plenty of time to enjoy them!

We’re big fans of making a statement down the aisle, so when we saw this wedding “bouquet” we thought it was the perfect fit for a bridal themed Idea to Steal. Have you ever seen an oversized bloom replace a classic bunch bouquet? We certainly hadn’t. And while traditional blooms are always nice, a singular ginormous protea is rather stunning – wouldn’t you agree?!

protea-wedding-flower

What are your thoughts on taking a single stem down the aisle? Is it artistic and bold or a statement to be filed under “things you wish you had done differently on your big day”- like that hairstyle your mom rocked at her wedding?!

Planning a wedding is like going to a candy store. There are so many different flavors to choose from! And just like in that confectioner’s dreamland, narrowing down exactly what you want can get overwhelming. Hence, bridal breakdowns. Like planning a wedding, a bride needs inspiration, as well a steady hand {ok, maybe like ten!} to help guide the way.

And in honor of our Wedding Week we chose our favorite wedding blogs that will do just that. There are a gazillion options out there these days, but this list is perfect for the modern-minded bride to gather unique finds that’ll ensure her dream wedding becomes a reality!

This UK wedding site offers the most ethereal bridal shoots, vividly imaginative photographs, and a truly unique aesthetic that no soon-to-be-bride should miss.

the-lane-wedding-blog

The Lane is a helpful directory for brides-to-be, but its blog The Lane: Backstage is an amazing source for wedding inspiration. Going behind the scenes of wedding shoots, editorials, and Bridal Fashion week, the blog offers a different view into the bridal industry. With strong images and insightful content, The Lane Backstage serves as a resource for anyone that wants to learn more about the bridal industry. Break away from the idea of the typical wedding and discover a new perspective- you just might fall in love. Shh, don’t tell the groom!

best-wedding-blogs-100-layer-cake

It might sound like a yummy dessert blog, but 100 Layer Cake is all about the celebration of love {hey, which for some might be through the stomach!}. 100 Layer Cake is a popular bridal go-to and rightfully so. They share some of the most envy-inducing weddings with captivating locations, TDF dresses, and cakes fancier than the car in your driveway. You could easily spend hours scrolling through this blog and who is to judge? Like Marie Antoinette said, let them eat cake!

jose-villa-weddingblog

If we wanted to talk wedding pictures {and we do!}, Jose Villa is one of the best wedding photographers, ever {we might be a little biased—he did shoot Erin’s wedding after all}. Villa’s blog showcases his creativity and ability to capture beautiful slivers of memories that will last a lifetime. Just like your wedding day, time will fly {trust us!} as you ponder through his dreamy images. Talk about wedding photography envy!
