These days, there is no must-have denim. A modern wardrobe requires a well-rounded denim repertoire. Skinnies will never leave us. Flares are here to stay. Ripped and boyfriend will always have their place in your closet. Really, you should have a go-to pair in every style, but these days I’m particularly fond of the rolled denim look.

Rolled denim has magic style powers. I love that they take the attention off your physique. The point of these jeans isn’t about how your butt looks. And wouldn’t it be nice to go through your day without ever thinking about that? Rolled denim have a laissez faire, but pulled together attitude about them. When styled properly, you can be approachable, but still be business meeting appropriate. I like a clean crisp denim right now. No need for lots of fading or any faux tears. And leave the stretch for your skinnies. When you invest in 100% real denim, these jeans will mold to you over time.

All you need to add is a good pump and a classic button down and you’ll immediately look pulled together. Since I’m operating on mom-time now and consider myself luck to get in a shampoo before leaving the house, a fool-proof formula for looking and feeling good is winner in my book.

Now I just have to come up with outfits of the other six days of the week.

Any suggestions?!

It pains me to admit it, but my closet is in a sad state of affairs these days. I haven’t had the time to do a true purge since being able to fit back into my pre-baby clothes. And since I’m doing the mama mad dash every day the same white button down and standard pair of jeans are getting way too much play. And that makes me sad. I used to take such pleasure in pulling together a chic look. Now I’m just relieved there isn’t a stain on my shirt.

But this is where Kamperett comes in. The newly launched clothing line designed and made right here in San Francisco is the injection of elevated, timeless, effortless style I’m so desperately craving. The line caught my attention when they debuted their first collection of eye-catching maxi dresses, but their just-launche spring looks have me mopping up drool.

I’m not typically the first to reach for a dress but Kamperett’s modern take has me reconsidering. These are dresses for women with a perspective. As designer Anna Chui describes, Kamperett looks are “subtly feminine and poetic, with an sense of understated elegance and luxury, but that can have a bit of edge or androgynous slant at times.” Boom. Yes! This is what I need right about now – elegance, luxury but a bit of edge. But what really has me sold is the debut of their spaghetti strap jumpsuit. The tailored top and wide-leg pants are just too good for words. I want to wear this to work topped with a crisp blazer (I have this one  in four colors!), out to lunch with girlfriends with a spring leather coat and fun pump and on a date-night with a nothing more than a great pair of earrings.

Every piece is the Kamperett line uses the highest quality fabrics and is sustainably made in San Francisco. They also feature amazing design details like hand-painted prints and subtle detailing that ensures the fit and movement of each piece is spot on. Is saying I want to clean out my closet and only have Kamperett pieces in it this season, taking the concept of capsule wardrobe too far? I just call it have a very clear sartorial vision. No judgements!

Here’s my dream spring ensemble.

I don’t know if it’s the few blossoming cherry trees I spied this week or the fact that it’s staying light until 6pm again, but I’m suddenly in the mood for Spring. That’s why this JCrew editorial caught my eye. Its bursts of saturated color feel so refreshing. I’m actually tempted to forgo my neutral-loving ways and pick up a bright piece or two from this lovely spring color palette.

I love how the hits of peachy-pinks are anchored with deep navy, cobalt blue and a hint of chartreuse. You could apply this color scheme to your wardrobe or to your home. A touch of a softer hue brings warmth, energy and vibrancy to its surroundings – so if you need to lift your spirits, be sure to pick up a piece or two from this collection. I guarantee you’ll start seeing life through rose-colored glasses!

I have always been a sucker for work wear. I’ve long obsessed over the wardrobes of powerful ladies in the movies. Some of my favorites include Sandra Bullock in The Proposal, Rena Russo in Thomas Crowne Affair and Helen Hunt in What Women Want (throwback I know, but rent it, I promise you’ll want every look). In each one of these cases, the clothes definitely made the woman. So when I recently discovered Modern Citizen I stopped dead in my fashion-deprived tracks. I trust you’ll do the same.

This collection is the perfect amalgamation of my favorite muses. Crisp, clean, and built on the foundation of luscious neutral tones and beautiful cuts. Chic is probably the most overused adjective in blog land these days, but it really is the only way to describe these looks. They’re proof positive that the basics do not have to boring. If you pick the right silhouettes, the perfect crop or the ideal chunky knit you’re guaranteed to look pulled together (no matter what kind of turmoil is happening on the inside – read this if you don’t know what I’m talking about). This is the type of power dressing I’ve missed since going “mama.” And I think it’s time I get back in the sartorial game. There’s just something so empowering about wearing clothes that make you feel like the best version of yourself. I strongly suspect you’ll be feeling very Olivia Pope in any one of Modern Citizen’s looks and that would definitely be my best self!

For all my Bay Area babes, I have a very special treat to share with you. Modern Citizen will open its doors to the general public for its Biannual Showroom Sale this Saturday, January 23rd – a day before the sale goes online.

You’ll be able to save up to 50% off bestsellers & editor favorites along with jewelry, scarves and accessories. I think I might try to line up early for this one.

PS – I’ve thought about bringing Monday Work Wear back. Would you be into it??

Call me crazy, but winter is my favorite fashion season of the year. Winter fashion let’s you play with thick textured layers, dusty colors and luscious fabrics. And I’ve never met a sweater or coat I didn’t love. Case in point: the latest installment of my post-baby personal style.

While it may look like I took a jaunt across the pond to Wales – that was the inspiration for my styling choices with this look – don’t be fooled!

This beautifully rustic location is a park a mere five minutes from our loft! A hike up a grassy hill delivers some of the best views in all of San Francisco. My Hunter Boots from Zappos look right at home don’t they? There’s nothing better than a wardrobe staple that’s as functional as it is beautifully designed. The heritage of Hunter Boots feels timeless. The modern updates like the leather strap detailing makes Hunters as relevant today as they were when founded over 150 years ago.

It’s been fun to get out of my leggings and back to exploring my own closet in the last couple months. Now that I’ve taken little mini adventures around San Francisco, I may venture even further. All the more reason to come up with another good outfit, right?

If you need to catch up, check out my latest personal style posts HERE! And follow Apartment 34 on Snapchat (apartment34) to get some behind the scenes peeks into my closet and day to day styling choices. I’m thinking a morning outfit update would be fun, don’t you??

I’ve often been accused of being overly sentimental. I can have a hard time throwing things out. I kept a shoe box of notes passed in freshman algebra, books that I haven’t read in years but love, and clothes. My tendency to hold onto things has caused overstuffed drawers and overflowing closets. I’ve tried to get on the purge bandwagon – capsule wardrobes being the rage at the moment – but with fashion’s pendulum swing, I know it’s only a matter of time before styles from the past come back around.

apt34flaredenim1

Case in point, flared denim. I rocked this look hard circa… 2000 I’d say. Then the  jeans had an had overly dramatic bell bottom – and a lot of sparkly butt pocket detailing. I was in college. It kinda worked. Ok, ok, probably not my best choice. But low and behold, after a decade of nothing but skinnies (with the occasional boyfriend jean) here comes flared denim again and I’m loving the modern update.

IMG_2913.JPG

I snagged a new pair of Hudson Jeans from Zappos recently. I know a lot of people hesitate to buy jeans online but I haven’t been in a single store since Carter was born! Plus who ever has fun trying on jeans in a dressing room?? With free shipping and free returns (for a year – holla) you can order and try on to your heart’s content. It’s like Christmas everyday.

But back to these flares. I gotta say I’m into the look. Dark classic denim, understated detail, high waist and a bit of stretch – perfect for the upcoming holiday season. {As is my attempt at a fashion face in the pic below. Did I pull it off??}

If I was going to caution you about anything when it comes to this look, it helps to be taller than about 5’6″ or 5’7.” It can be hard to get the taper right if you’re petite. But if you can find the right fit, you’ll suddenly look six feet tall!

You know the adage. What once was old will become new again. As I round the corner heading further from 30 and closer to 40 this weekend – yes, I just typed four zero. gulp. – it feels a little odd to think about styles I wore in junior high being back in vogue (choker necklaces anyone?!). Thankfully, I think this flare look will stick around for quite some time. There will be no need to purge at the end of the season.

And that gives me ammunition when the husband asks why I need that walk-in closet in our new house.

What will you be doing this 4th of July weekend? Right about now everything on the list sounds like a good time – day up in wine country, trip to the beach, getaway to Tahoe. While we’re planning to hang pretty low with le bebe this year, that certainly doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate. The 4th is one of our fave holidays because it really is all about good food, friends and wine. In SF the weather has finally turned a corner – hello, summer, is that you? – and we can’t think of a better way to spend the day than gathering a group of friends for a weekend of outdoor entertaining!

After seeing these pics from the super-sweet Seattle-based photographer, Charles Redding, it’s clear that our ideal, low-key celebration needs to involve lots of rosé, small bites and laughter!

We plan to take advantage of the long weekend by spending lots of it in the kitchen checking off recipes from our never-ending Pinterest boards. A quick trip to the farmer’s market in the morning will yield everything we need for this Fig and Melon salad. It looks so yummy and is perfectly refreshing for the heat. We also really want to flex our muscle with this Strawberry and Blueberry Tiramisu – because who doesn’t love a fun 4th-themed dessert?!

While I stir, whip and chop, I’ll be doing it super casual in some easy 4th inspired style. I’m thinking boyfriend denim shorts, a cute racerback tank and some metallic slip-ons – the perfect lady-with-a-baby weekend wear if you ask me! We may head to the park or hang out on the rooftop deck because let’s be honest, our backyard is far from looking anything like this. Either way, I love that this breezy outfit doesn’t restrict any on-the-fly fun idea from happening. It’s summer after all!

We’ve been stacking our pennies all winter long for this time of year. It’s so time to shake off the winter wardrobe blues and put on something fresh and fun for Spring!

apartment34springfashioninspo

This season, we’re all about loose, casual basics – you can literally live in a little capsule wardrobe – no need to clean out your entire closet. The key? Mix and match classic style staples with the perfect dash of personal style. Oh make sure your accessories are top notch! That’s what will help every day’s look feel new. Maybe a crisp white shirt will freshen your spirits? Or a lush neutral handbag? Sometimes all you need is a new pair of sunnies to make your entire wardrobe feel bright and new!

Thankfully, an entire site’s worth of our closet “must-have splurges” are on sale – for one week only! Have you always wanted to own a Clare V. clutch? Oui! Eyeing some Karen Walker sunnies since last spring? We’re also a big fan of making it a priority to buy quality over quantity. Here’s your chance to fill your cart with a covetable piece {ok, ok or two!} because everything at Otte NYC is 20% off, including new arrivals. Now there’s a way to put a spring in our step!
