The power of a weekend getaway should not be ignored. It is amazing what 48 hours away from your daily routine can do for you. That’s yet another reason we feel lucky living in San Francisco. There are amazing places to escape to all around us – many less than a 90 minute drive north or south!

This is definitely the case with our most recent Gotta Getaway discovery – the Ritz-Carlton at Half Moon Bay.

Gotta-Getaway-Half-Moon-Bay-7

Only 45 minutes down the coast, the majestic hotel sits atop a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The grounds are gorgeous, with over six miles of walking paths that take you along the cliff’s edge and down to little secluded beaches.

We happened to be there on a particularly beautiful, relatively warm day. Half Moon Bay is known for its misty fog , wind and therefore slightly cooler temperatures, but the Ritz-Carlton has got you covered. Its patio is dotted with firepits to keep you warm – and you can get s’mores kits for a little extra after-dinner treat!

Our room overlooked the golf course and ocean just beyond it. There is very little I love more than a good hotel bed!

Between drinks in the bar, beautiful treats brought to our room and an amazing dinner in the newly renovated restaurant Navio, it was like our own little oasis out in what felt like the middle of nowhere. And I loved it.

I see many escapes to Half Moon Bay in my future! Meet you there?!

By now, we have all seen our beloved Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree stand tall in all of its beauty. It’s commonly housed in a chunky, woven seagrass basket {at least according to Pinterest}.

But why not switch up things a bit and instead of baskets as pots, try using a bag – it’s this week’s Idea to Steal!

Idea-To-Steal-Trees-in-Bags

All you need is a tall raw canvas tote. You’ll certainly need a sturdy insert in order order for the fig leaf to hold its shape {I’d likely cheat with a smaller planter inside}.

Depending on the size of your plant or tree, I’m thinking that there are some great laundry bags that’ll do this trick quite nicely. I’m considering giving this one or these a try!

The crop top is one of those trends that seems to be everywhere this summer. We’re talking about showing just a hint of midriff, not anything more {please, no belly buttons!}. I like the sophisticated appeal and throw back style. I’m this close to trying it out myself.

The fine line of daring and sexy versus…how do we say overexposed in French…has me on fence though. There’s definitely that self-conscious aspect about baring the midriff. Constantly sucking in your stomach – a price we pay for fabulous fashion or too much work for a passing craze?

I’m curious, would you dare rock the crop??

For this edition of Designer Files, I’ve found another loft, this time in Paris (!) and designed by Muriel Cibot. But this isn’t your predictable {though still fabulous} French design. The fact that it is indeed a Parisian apartment {I double checked!} without a foot of crown molding, parquet floors or elegantly placed Baroque furniture makes it much more intriguing, don’t you think?

There are design choices in this space that are so smart and different you almost have to look twice to notice them!

For instance, it’s not everyday you see a vintage French water jug turned into a light fixture. I’m also loving the idea that is carried out on the back of the shelving unit. Acting as art, only specifically chosen shelves are lined with graphic wallpaper, mimicking stenciled drawings.

Designer-Files-Apartment-34-Parisian-Loft5Designer-Files-Apartment-34-Parisian-Loft-8

The kitchen is by far the best part of the space {and this is not just because I’m a sucker for kitchens!} Sliding barn doors, poppy red wire light bulb pendants and concrete tile floors are all lust-worthy design elements.

Designer-Files-Apartment-34-Parisian-Loft-6Designer-Files-Apartment-34-Parisian-Loft-3Designer-Files-Apartment-34-Parisian-Loft-2

The space is the perfect mix of rustic touches and modern finishes. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to move in right now!

What do you think? Are you partial to classic french style or is the updated take grabbing you as much as it is me? Be sure to check out more designers and their spaces here!

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of having Daily Candy stop by for a fun photo shoot of the loft! I had such a great time with them and the photographer, Aubrie Pick, captured some amazing shots. The feature is over on Daily Candy now, but before you head over there, here’s a sneak peek of some of my favorite outtakes!

Daily-Candy-Outtakes-4Daily-Candy-Outtakes-5

First stop: our bedroom! I’ve continued to edit it down, really working to keep clutter put away and surfaces clean. I love the zen, hotel like feel. And remember I promised to share how I’m making my bed these days? Here’s the big reveal! I start with a crisp white duvet with a classic gray border from Crane & Canopy. Beneath that I layer a textured cream blanket. Herringbone shams add one more layer and even more texture. It feels clean, crisp and modern and I love it. Apparently Chloe does too! One of the best things about Frenchies is their endless ability to crack you up!! I can never be in a bad mood when I come home to that crazy little dog.

Down in the office, my collection of Vogues continues to grow. I better watch out or it will someday block my office window entirely!

Nothing makes me smile more than a productive day at my desk. It really is my happy place.

You’ll also notice some updates in our living room. I followed Emily’s advice, trying to create a distinct living space using rugs. I tried the layered rugs trend and am loving the look of the jute under my smaller patterned rug. The larger footprint really grounds the room – and Bailey loves the added padding too!

I also lined the window seat with a bunch of super comfy and gorgeous custom pillows {also on the sofa!} from Rebecca Atwood. Classic Hans J. Wegner Wishbone Chairs create a sweet conversation spot by the fireplace that really opens up the room {West Elm has a great budget friendly version}.

Daily-Candy-Outtakes-6Daily-Candy-Outtakes-3

I also love having pops of green dotted throughout the loft. I found the perfect Fiddle Leaf plant to accessorize our window seat and Natalie Bowen introduced to me the idea of fig branches, complete with bright green young figs, as a flower arrangement. I’m obsessed!

Daily-Candy-Outtakes-8Daily-Candy-Outtakes-9

Chloe and Bailey were such cooperative little models for the day. I love that they are as happy in the Loft 2.0 as we are. Now the question is where do we go from here. I find creating a home to be a constantly evolving process. In my mind, there is no such thing as  done. I can’t wait to discover where the design journey takes us next!

I want to thank Daily Candy again for stopping by. I had such a ball! Be sure to check out the full loft tour and interview here!!

Back in January, I was asked, along with four other trendsetters up and down the west coast, to be a part of the Reimagining the Sunset Home project. This involved designing and styling a room {in my case two!} to be viewed by 25,000 people and featured in the September issue of Sunset Magazine. Let’s repeat: Sunset. Magazine!

Completely shocked, rather terrified and ultimately overjoyed, of course, I said yes! By no means do I claim to be an interior designer. In fact, the only design that I’d done to date is in my own home, but this challenge felt like the ultimate stretch of my styling skills. Now, six months later and the major undertaking completed, as promised, I wanted to share more of my design journey with you. And quite the journey it was!

First up: where oh where to begin!

Sunset-Magazine-Apartment-34-Inspiration-Room

Sunset gave each designer an inspiration room taken directly out of vintage issues of the magazine {they keep copies of all issues of the 100+ year old pub in volumes in an onsite library. I got to see it. It was awesome!} Here was my inspiration room: a 1970’s rumpus room, complete with hammock! And I think my mom’s house still has that same rug, btdubs.

I immediately knew I wanted to modernize the idea of a rumpus room, since nobody has them anymore! I liked the idea of a room that still brought the family together, but with a twist on today’s way of life: No TV, no iPads, no phones. No electronics whatsoever! I wanted to create a space where a family can hang out and play games, read and just “be together.” The idea of an Unplugged Den was born.

Like most people these days, I started my design process off on Pinterest. I created two different boards- one for the Unplugged Den and one for my second assignment, a Home Office {you can see the boards here!}. I began dumping in inspiration images that went with the theme and soon saw a pattern of different elements I wanted to feature in the rooms: games, oversized art, comfort, and a cubby wall!

Sunset-Magazine-Unplugged-Den-Insp

Since I was also given the task of designing the office {without an inspiration image as home offices didn’t really exist in the ’70’s!}, I wanted the two spaces to feel connected. Keeping with the-family-together-time theme, I decided to design an office where parents could work and children could do homework all at the same time. Again, I wanted things clean and white, with a touch of whimsy and a little dose of glamour {my dream office in the back of my mind and all}.

Sunset-Magazine-Office-Insp

With a clear direction of where we were going in hand, the hard part came: designing layouts and finding the perfect pieces to fit within them. We hit the streets and searched the internet high and low for items that were reminiscent of those in our inspiration boards and we stumbled across some amazing finds!

No stay tuned, as next week we’ll break down the sources of some of our favorite pieces that made it into the final designs.

Come Friday, summer will officially be here {are you as shocked as am I?}. What better way to usher in the season than with the hottest looks of Resort Wear 2014? Overall, most designers were shying away from tight-fitting silhouettes and embracing the loose, casual, ease that summer rightfully calls for and I couldn’t be happier about it.

One of the most striking collections, Max Mara, packed a punch with some amazing color combinations. Blush tones looked contrasted nicely against darker emeralds and cerulean blue. Coral was paired with bright orange and a salmon colored lip, reinforcing the power of color and mixing hues in the same palette. Gorgeous!

Philip Lim 3.1 also caught my eye. Lim, who usually goes more playful in his styling, attempted to make this line a transition from youth to maturity. You can see the streamlined  kimono style cuts and cropped jackets. He gave a nod to younger days with shorter above the knee hemlines and funky metallic fabrics.

Stella McCartney wasn’t afraid to use a little pattern. A mustard yellow snakeskin pattern paired with baby powder pink looked right on trend for next year!

Apartment-34-Monday-Work-Wear-Resort-2013-Stella-McCartney

The best collection of Resort 2014, hands down, has to be my go-to line, Chloé. The collection is exactly what I want to wear come warm weather season. The collection’s key element is the use of relaxed garments – making it easy to be comfortable and weather appropriate, without showing off too much skin.

The highlight of the collection has to be the pants. I for one, tend to shy away from shorts and skirts and love the idea of a cool summer trouser. A trouser might sound bizarre in hot weather, but hem it above the ankle with a wide fit and pleat, and you have the “it” recipe to staying cool and chic all the into fall!

Before we leave, can we talk about those shoes?! I need that black cap toe pump with the wide stacked heel in my life  right now.

Who were your favorite of the Resort collections this year? Any shows that blew it out the park for you that I failed to mention?

While I knew Austin was a hot spot for music and food, on my trip there last month I was thrilled to learn its also a great little city for shopping! Of course, Camille was giving me some of her best insider tips and she knows my style all too well.

When she took me into Spartan, decked out with crisp white walls and filled with the most interesting and gorgeously made objects and accessories, I knew this store was made for me! Let’s just say, I left my heart in Spartan!

I had so much fun looking at all these unique textiles and woven wall hangings. Every corner of the store had something I would have taken home with me: soaps and luxurious lotions, leather pouches and nature inspired mobiles. And don’t even get me started on the jewelry!

I was totally smitten with this neon rope cuff! And I wanted to take some of these wood bowls and scarves home with me, but I had to hold back. I didn’t leave totally empty handed though…

I ended up leaving with the striped maroon and orange zip pouch above {that I carry almost every day!} as well as this gorgeous leather iPad cover.

And guess what, I’ve got good news for all you Bay Area readers; some of these items are available in San Francisco! Spartan has a pop up shop in The Voyager on Valencia Street! Thank goodness, because it was definitely hard to leave so many lovely things behind.

Thank you Austin for being so good to me! Until next time and trust me it will be sooner rather than later.

Do you have any favorite spots in Austin I should check out the next time I’m in town?

Need more retail therapy? get your fill right here! Have a store I should check out? Please let me know about it in the comments section below. I love supporting small boutiques with amazing pieces!

It’s back, the second edition of Styling Your Staples! You remember this, right? Our new series in which seven stellar style bloggers put their touch on the pieces every woman should have in their wardrobe.

Second up on our task list was to put our spin on the classic White Oxford Shirt! Once again, I’m loving all the major style inspiration everyone provided.
Apartment-34-Style-Your-Staples-CollageIMG_1038

I’m a huge fan of the Oxford shirt. Putting on an Oxford is one of the easiest ways to feel immediately “dressed up” no matter what you pair it with. I tend to put a menswear-inspired spin on mine. In fact, I usually wear a men’s oxford {the one I have on is from the Gap!}. I just love that loose, boxy style. It’s simple and clean, perfect for a day at the office or an afternoon about town. Apartment-34-Style-Your-Staples-Oxford1Apartment-34-Style-Your-Staples-Oxford-3
