As I’ve been scanning the interwebs for new design ideas of late, getting rather tired of the same ole same (you too??), suddenly something fresh began to jump out. First I spied one here, then one there and suddenly, they seemed to be popping up everywhere I looked – even in a stunning new house that just went on the market this week! What might this dazzling new design trend be, pray tell?

Well, metal railings of course!

Are you as into it as I am?? What at one time felt very 80’s, is suddenly looking incredibly modern, bold and really interesting again. I’m particularly intrigued to to see metal stair rails used to a beautiful effect in a wide variety of design styles – and look amazing in every instance.

Minimalist, old-world, California modern, traditional – it seems you can indeed find metal railings that becomes a design showpiece in virtually any space. All of the examples shown here have me wondering if I should have done a metal railing on my own stairway! Continue to scroll and pick your favorite style (if you can – I love them all!).

Today I have another installment of our 2018 Design Ideas series. I am so excited to bring you one of my favorite interior design dynamic duos, the husband and wife team behind Homework DesignHopefully you caught the tour of Susan and Ben’s own crazy gorgeous San Francisco home (right here). Today they’ve tipped their hands to share the inspirations driving their innovative, bold designs right now.

Susan and Ben are known for taking their projects to the next level. They’re always on the cutting edge with an inventive new use of pattern, color or detail that feels totally unique and totally stunning. So naturally when Susan and Ben offered to share their advice for 2018 design, I was all ears.

“This year we’re excited to go big or go home! Out with white, light, and minimal- and in with maximalism and over the top! We’re talking pattern on pattern (on pattern!), complementary color combos, and obtuse angles. Oh, and cement tiles, statement lighting, and the color pink are here to stay.”

While I might not be jumping on the uber-bold pink bandwagon or be willing to let go my attempts at minimalism right away, I am certainly warming to a more intense use of color, especially when its tone on tone. And if I could add some geometric tile to our house I totally would (oh isn’t how funny what a year or two later brings to the design table). But if you need to ease into some of this trends, the pieces below should help!

While I’ve already talked a bit about 2018 design trends, I much rather get design ideas straight from the source – aka a slew of the amazing interior designers I follow on Instagram and some I even dare to call friends. Thankfully, I found a group of amazing interior designers who are willing to share a few of their secrets with us! Over the next few weeks I’m going to bring you some of my favorite designers and the trends and pieces they can’t wait to get into their clients’ homes this year.

Today we’re peeking into the 2018 moodboard of Lauren Nelson Designs. You might remember her work from this home tour (only our most popular of 2017!). Lauren – as I’ve said before is basically my design spirit animal. She’s even helping me with some (currently top secret!) things for my house. Lauren is taking a very elegant approach to 2018 design and I am really feeling it.

As Nelson explains, “I’m loving all things curvy these days. Arched doorways, curved sofas, rippled glass light fixtures, curved staircases, even ogee edge countertops, dare I say!  I see the pendulum swinging back to more tradition and ornamentation, as a nice balance to the clean-lined modern spaces we’ve been seeing & loving for the last decade.”

While I am the first to love to Scandi style or classic mid-century modern lines, I definitely appreciate the ornamentation that Lauren is talking about (living in a modern Victorian makes it a bit of a requirement!). I have been gravitating to more decorative, refined looking pieces of late. The key is to balance touches of formality within an approachable, livable style. Challenging? Perhaps. But this is where a designer’s expertise really shines through. You should be able to integrate beautiful design in a contemporary home. I’ve rounded up a few of my current favorite “fancy” pieces to give you some more inspiration!design idea to try on apartment 34

What do you think of this style? It’s certainly more formal than the typical uber-casual American look. But it feels nice to spruce things up a bit, don’t you think? Thank you for the inspiration Lauren!

When looking for fresh inspiration do you turn to our trusted friend Pinterest like I do? Of course you do. That’s why I was so intrigued when I heard about one of the fastest growing interior design trends on Pinterest. Care to guess what it is? Nope, not terra cotta. Not curved couches. Not even black kitchens. It’s the fifth wall, aka the ceiling! I do agree that statement ceilings can transform a room. From the top down with bold paint, striking wallpaper or intricate texture, a designed ceiling envelopes you, taking a room next level.  Check out the examples below for some major inspiration.

Painted ceilings are a bold but easy way to add drama to your space. A pattern can help accent a vaulted ceiling, while a solid color adds major contrast.

Statement ceilings are fantastic in kids’ spaces.

White beams add interest while keeping things light. Tailored beams are stately and traditional, while the rough and rustic style soften things with a more country edge.

Cladding is another beautiful ceiling option that adds more texture without closing in on you.

And if you’re lucky enough to have a house that comes with gorgeous beams you can just let them hang out a’natural.

Saves for “statement ceilings” on Pinterest were up +310% at the start of the year. What say you? Would you try this tend in your house?
