adding color to your holiday table with apartment 34

Over the years I’ve taken a variety of approaches to holiday decorating. Over-the-top glam. Pops of black and white. Pseudo scandi. Every one creates a unique and distinctive feeling. So when CB2 approached me design a holiday table this season, I immediately said yes! This year I’m craving some change (in many forms) but for the holidays it is manifesting in a lush, bold and dare I saw it – colorful Christmas. I don’t know if it’s the return of velvet, the infiltration of millennial pink or my new addiction to pin to my color board, but as my mind began to swirl about a holiday tale, this is the moodboard that came forth. I made it my personal challenge to channel this vibe into a tablescape.

How do you think I did??

This table breaks all kinds of rules. Navy plates, teal trees, rose gold place settings all on one side and mix and match glassware. But it’s your party so why not have fun?!

If you haven’t quite figured out what you want your holiday table to look like this year, why not just use mine? Seriously – you can win the entire thing. Visit the CB2 in Berkeley, CA any time through Wednesday, November 29 to entire to win this tablescape for eight ($1,000 value!). Simply ask an associate how to enter.

Better yet, I’ll be at the Berkeley CB2 to celebrate the start of the season with you THIS Wednesday from 5-8pm! There will be more giveaways, flash sales, gift wrappers & personal shoppers to help you treasure hunt. And I’ll be recreating this entire table in person. I would so love to see you there.

If you’re not based in the East Bay you can also meet Caitlin Flemming in San Francisco, Meg Biram in Washington DC, Adrienne Raquel in NYC, Alaina Katz in Chicago, Kate Arends in Minneapolis, Whitney Leigh Morris in LA and Paola Mathe in Austin.

Let’s kick this season off in style, shall we friends?

Yes, it’s Cyber Monday and there are deals to be found every single place you look, but guess what? No one will swoon about how much you saved. Only if what you found is truly special. So this year, rather than hunt for all the stereotypical profiles, I decided to simply find THE things (34 of them of course!) that anyone would love to receive this year. This could be your bff, your mom, your corker, your partner, even your kiddo or your boss. Some of the items in my gift guide below are great deals. Some of them are just badass. Because this year I’ve really taken to heart that it’s only what’s given with love that counts.

Ok, I’ll admit it. In years past, I’ve been a decorate-for-Christmas-on-December-23 type of girl. The holidays just always seem to sneak up on me. But this year, having finally moved into our fixer-upper and having a 20-month-old on my hands, everything is different. Now I have a lot more incentive to make our house feel special, cozy and inviting. I really want the season to be extra merry and bright for my kiddo – but I’m embracing the spirit too. After everything 2016 has put us through, I’m very ready to revel in the ultimate yuletide feeling. You with me?

As in years past, I turned to the guru, one Ms. Martha Stewart, to help with my holiday decorating. This year, I decided to turn our entryway into a Christmas-y wonderland. Spoiler alert – this is also a major sneak peek of our house!

apt34-martha-8458

A dramatic entryway deserves some dramatic holiday decor, but achieving the look doesn’t have to be complicated. I used just a few key pieces to create the simple, sophisticated vibe I was going for; a garland, a wreath and a little mini tree.

To make it easy on myself, I had Ms. Martha help me out with a beautiful faux garland as well as a faux wreath from her Martha Stewart for the Home Depot collection. Going faux makes life so much easier. There’s no needles scattering everywhere and no worry about the entire thing turning brown and brittle. You’re guaranteed to have good looking greens until they go back into their boxes, ready for the next year.

But going faux doesn’t mean you can’t get creative. In fact, it just gives you a great base to work with – no extensive DIY skills required. To make my garland and wreath a bit more personal, I decided I wanted to add my own elements. Some additional fresh pine boughs scattered throughout the garland, along with sprigs of white berries helped to fill out the gaps and really amp up the unique factor. I love how the garland cascades down the newel post on the stairway. It adds a touch of extra drama.

apt34-martha-8396apt34holidaydecor2

Adding berry sprigs to the wreath (which already came frosted and adorned with its own pine cones), pulls the entire look together. Tszujing a store-bought garland or wreath doesn’t require a set plan nor any over thinking of the design. Simply stick in branches here and there until you start to get the look you’re going for. I intentionally added weight to one side of the wreath to make it a little more asymmetrical along with a jumob-sized pinecone as a final flourish.

apt34_holidaydecor5apt34holidaydecor3

A little potted pine tucked into our hallway corner adds some additional personality to the entryway – and it was just so cute I couldn’t resist him.

And there you have it. Just a few easy steps and my house feels celebratory the moment you set foot through the door. My kiddo really loves it. And I really really love that.

The holiday season is filled with treats. From cookies and pies to chocolates and candy canes, it seems everywhere you look, there’s something sweet to be had. But I try to resist all of those temptations (save a cheat now and then). That’s because I like to save my holiday indulgences for Oatmeal Cookies. No, not the kind you eat, but the kind you drink!

apt34_oatmeal_cookie

The Oatmeal Cookie is the perfect holiday cocktail. Slightly sweet, slightly spicy with a nice little kick. I like that the drink is much lighter than Eggnog and not quite as in your face as a Hot Toddy or as sugary sweet as Hot Buttered Rum. I love to sip on my Oatmeal Cookie after dinner, enjoy one while wrapping (or unwrapping!) presents, or serve them as a pretty option at a holiday party.

But perhaps the very best part about the Oatmeal Cookie cocktail? It is the easiest holiday drink to make. Seriously. Scroll below for the complete recipe and instructions. Don’t blink or you might miss them.

RECIPE: OATMEAL COOKIE COCKTAIL

Ingredients

1 part Goldschlager
1 part Baileys Irish Cream
1 part Butterscotch Schnapps
ice

Instructions

Mix one shot Goldschlager, one shot Baileys Irish Cream and one shot Butterscotch Schnapps in a cocktail shaker over ice. Give it a good shake. Pour into glasses.

If you want to fancy up your Cookie a bit, you can double the recipe (as I did above), add a jumbo square ice cube to each glass (these trays make it easy), garnish with cinnamon sticks (I rolled mine in sanding sugar) and sprinkle a little cinnamon over the top.

Regardless of how you pour them, I guarantee you’re going to love these Oatmeal Cookies. Surprise your friends at your annual cookie swap party. I have a feeling you’ll still win first prize!

Everyone can use an extra jolt of energy, especially during the holidays. That’s why all things coffee make wonderful gifts. Coffee has become a ritual in its own right. Enjoying a much-loved cup, can often be the highlight of one’s day. I certainly look forward to my daily cup – even if it is decaf! And now all the coffee accouterments are design pieces in their own right. I’d gladly see any one of these show up on my kitchen counter, whether I was a coffee drinker or not.apt34_giftguide_coffeefreaks

My current love affair with nontraditional holiday decor shows no sign of slowing. Today, I’ve got a holiday Idea to Steal – Christmas trees for your table top. Whether you live in a space too tiny for a traditional tree, or you simply want to add a little more holiday greenery around your home, a pine branch or two is all you need for mini trees.

vihrea1_suvisurlevifapt34_christmasidea  enhanced-buzz-10007-1386794298-11-1

Simply grab a branch of your favorite pine (I’m partial to Butte) and put it in your favorite vase. This tiny tree look can work with any style. Add one (or two) for eclectic shelfie perfection. Embrace the nordic influence and go black and white with your color palette. A pine bough in a black vase is rather striking. Mixed in with warm amber tones like in the pic above creates a cozy vibe. You could even add a little bauble to your branch. Or maybe a string of mini lights. But even naked, they lend a festive air. I think one might need to show up on my desk before my holiday decorating is done.

What do you think? Do you like this mini tree idea?

We’re doubling up on the gift guide action today! This year, rather than do the last minute gift scramble, I’m determined to get my shopping done early. As I hunt around, I’m amazed how many good things are already sold out! Seriously friends, I’d get to gifting this week if I were you. To help, I’m going to keep the gift guides a-comin.

This guide is for the art lovers out there. I realize art can be challenging to gift, but when you get it right, it can be spectacular. This probably isn’t the best prezi for your coworker, cousin or recent acquaintance, but if you have someone special that you’re looking to wow, art just might do the trick.

apt34_art_lovers_gift_guide

Access to good art is proliferating all the time. I can’t turn around without finding another great resource. From Tappan Collective to newly launched Twyla Art to some favorite shops that just have good taste (Consort Design and newly launched home goods site the Maryn). You now find quality prints at amazing prices. You can also still spend a pretty penny if you want to go all in.

When shopping for art for someone else, it’s good to keep three tings in mind. Their preferred color palettes, the general style of art they like (modern, abstract, realist, photography etc) and scale. As thoughtful as an oversized piece might be, not everyone can find a spot for a huge canvas in their space.

Don’t forget, you can also think outside of the wall art box! Ceramics are having a major moment and a handmade piece of pottery can be both functional and beautiful. In the gift guide below, I’ve rounded up a few art options that have recently caught my eye, but that I think also have universal appeal. I hope one of them might spark a gift idea for you.

apt34_giftguide_artlovers

1 This work of nature photography by Ukranian photographer Elena Lyakir takes the sometimes cliched staple to a new level by using layered photography techniques to create a moody, almost pattern-like effect.

2 By their uniform quality, you’d never guess that Gerhard Ceramics bud vases are each hand thrown on a pottery wheel. But believe it. I’ve seen the San Francisco artist work her magic with my own eyes and it is indeed magic. Her little vessels are gorgeous and the new matte black option has me obsessed. Lucky for artist Britt Gerhard thought ahead and created a convenient little gift pack of three – already boxed up and ready for you to give away.

3 I stumbled upon the work of Caroline Walls somewhere along the internet rabbit hole and I am loving her line drawings of figures. One would look fab in my bedroom but they’d work in any space The neutral colors are friendly to any style of decor.

4 If buying art feels a touch too intimidating, there are always art books! The newly released Art House by art aficionado and all-around style guru Alisa Carrol (who we profield here awhile back), chronicles the collaboration of a major art collector and her interior designer – think spaces and an epic art collection to oogle over for days.

5 Back to that ceramics idea. How about gifting something functional like these kick ass lamps by Marin artist Amanda Wright. Wright hand makes every single piece – down to every gold stud. Color me impressed. I’m very into the lamps’ rock and roll vibe.

6 I love an art piece with a black background – it’s just dramatic. And this chic floral print is both affordable and accessible. Anyone could easily work it into a collection.

7 Do you know the band Cold War Kids? Well you should, cuz they rock, but this piece is a cool abstract created by band member Matt Maust. An art fan or a music fan would appreciate this work.

8 I’m always a sucker for the abstract with interesting use of color and texture. This piece by artist Sylvia McEwan has a great use of color and balance. I’m into it and think someone else might be too.

In years past, I’ve gone very big when decorating for the holidays (my most epic tree lives on and on and on thanks to Pinterest). But now that we’re in our house, I’m trying to settle in on a more streamlined style. It’s funny. Even though we have a lot more space, I want to have a lot less. And that includes holiday decor. I don’t need to store boxes and boxes of crap stuff that I only look at for 30 days a year. I’m vibing on minimal holiday decor this season.

apt34_minimalchristmas

I stumbled upon this stunning Scandinavian home that totally epitomizes my vision. It’s not surprising. It’s owned by the founder of Norm Architects, one of my major design muses. I’m immediately envious of this home’s gorgeous sanded concrete floors. That’s what I desperately wanted to do in our house, but I didn’t win that design fight. Le sigh. But I digress. I’m really loving the subtle, chic nods to the holiday season sprinkled throughout the space.

apt34_minimalchristmas3apt34minimalchristmas5apt34minimalchristmas4

As you look around this house, little holiday touches adorn each room. A tree that looks as if it was plucked from the Danish forrest surrounding the property. Branches on a mantel dotted with chic, modern ornaments. Packages wrapped up in brown packing paper and tied with red string lay against the wall. Candlelight is everywhere. The owner explains that he relies on elements of nature to imbue his rooms with the holiday vibe. He wants the festive touches to feel like part of the room’s natural decor. A perfect example is the tray of moss and thick pillar candles on the dining room table. It adds a cozy adornment without any of the holiday cheese factor.

apt34minimalchristmas2apt34minimalchristmas7apt34minimalchristmas6

Simple bits of greenery – in one case laid across a vase rather than in it in the pic above – or a potted tree atop the kitchen table give a nod & a wink to the season. I realize this shunning of glitter and gobs of red and green might seem a little harsh, but I love the striking, cozy mood it creates. Every element of a room has meaning to the family who inhabits it. Your holiday stuff doesn’t have to be in your face. And the post-holiday clean up would be a breeze! I know this is the antithesis of the HGTV crowd (how many Pier One ads did I see during last night’s Fixer Upper premier?!), but I am diggin’ this look big time.

While our house is far from ready for prime time at the moment, I’ll share some sneak peeks on Instagram (you can follow me here) once I get to decking these halls. It isn’t December 1st quite yet so I feel a little less guilty.
