Anyone else super happy it’s Friday?? After an extra busy few weeks I’m reaalllyyy looking forward to a very low key weekend. Do you find it is really hard these days to feel deserving of down time? I certainly do. In fact, I was just reading about the importance of play for adults. Something to to seriously consider. This weekend I am escaping the city (and even my kid) for a little R&R in wine country. It’s been a really long time since we’ve been up there – even though it’s one of my favorite places on earth. Despite the devastating wild fires last fall, wine country is very open for business. I cannot wait to spend a little time in my happy place, curled up with a good book – or if I’m being realistic, a magazine – and indulge in a little me time (you can see why I love wine country so much HERE).

I hope you’re able to relax, unwind and maybe even unplug(!) this weekend. Right after you check out our top links of the week of course.

I recently shared a stunning dream kitchen. Well, another one debuted this week and I can personally attest to its gorgeousness because I’ve been in it! If you haven’t seen coco+kelley’s kitchen you must check it out.

Victoria shared one of my favorite photographers. If you don’t know her work now you know.

I’ve definitely got some wanderlust and thank’s to Erica’s amazing recap I’ve added Hong Kong to my travel wishlist.

Since wellness is basically a state of being right now I’m always intrigued by the latest fad. I just read about activated charcoal pills. Have you tried them? Are you into them?

Similarly, “lattes” that don’t actually have coffee in them are now a thing. This pink rose latte sounds interesting. Would you give it a go?

Earlier this week, I shared something a tad personal on Instagram and to my surprise it seemed to resonate quite a bit. If you missed it you can see it right here.

Did you catch the One Room Challenge update this week? I’ve set my design direction, now it’s off to the races!

I haven’t had the shopping bug in a long time, but I’m feeling very ready to shake off the winter doldrums with a few fresh threads. Of course there are the pieces I’m coveting in my April edit, but ShopBop is having on of their mega sales right now. You can save up to $500 off! I’ve been pinning all of my faves, but I’ve got my eye on a light spring jacket, some fresh kicks and some cute jeans. Hurry hurry cuz this sale ends tomorrow.

If that’s not enough, Loeffler Randall is also having their Friends & Family sale. I’ve got this bag in my cart.

And if you’d rather dress your house than your body, One Kings Lane is have a moving sale with some incredible deals. Like this stunning four-poster bed. A sweet set of dishesOr a cutie little pendant light.

If you’re looking for even more spring finds I’ve been pinning all my faves like mad.

Happy Weekend!

flower power & friday finds on apartment 34

This year I (along with most of the internet it seems) have been focusing on self-improvement. The words wellness and self-care are getting thrown around so much that they’ve almost lost their meaning, but I think the idea is a good one. I’m all for using serums, taking restorative baths and meditating, but I’m more interested in ditching bad habits like negative self-talk, reactionary defensiveness, insecurity, and fear. Easy-peasy right? Obviously, not so much, but a little self-awareness and intention can go a long way.

Another great way to do a little self-improvement is to learn a new skill – like flower arranging! My beautiful friend Natalie Brookshire has teamed up with the Bay Area entrepreneurial mothers’ conference In Good Company to teach a floral workshop in San Francisco on April 14. You can learn to make something like the stunner above!

But this class is a bit different than the standard fare. You get to be in a truly gorgeous space in San Francisco’s quaint, Jackson Square neighborhood. You get to enjoy some rurl tasty food. True Botanicals will be on hand offering personalized skincare consultations. And, most importantly, this is a giveback workshop. Every single dollar made goes to two incredible organizations helping mamas in need: On Your Feet Foundation assists birth mothers with practical help after they have chosen adoption for their child; and Homeless Prenatal Program helps provide for poor and homeless families, with the end goal of ending childhood poverty.

If you ever wanted to invest in yourself this is your triple whammy. You get some self-care, a new skill and get to help two amazing organizations. For all my Bay Area readers, please consider buying a ticket right here.

And apparently, podcasts work for self-improvement too.

I recently listened to the Goop podcast with Oprah, which I loved. It’s like a beginners guide to self-awareness.

And then the Oprah podcast with Brene Brown which I really loved. This is like a master class in recognizing your own issues.

5 tips on how to stop being defensive. Yes pls.

I’m very into horoscopes and particularly excited about my opportunities for growth this month (fellow Scorpios take note). Do you get into your horoscope?

How to own your shit according to Ellen Pompeo. I stopped watching Greys Anatomy years ago, but I still love her and this video is spot on.

And for the ladies, have you heard about the describe yourself like a male author challenge on Twitter? It’s a little lighter fare in the #metoo theme but it’s pretty dang hilarious. And sometimes the best way to improve is to just laugh.

Oh and if you just need some good ole fashioned design inspiration (which is why probably come here right?!) how about:

A key tool you need in your styling arsenal.

My favorite kitchen design of all time.

What to hang on your walls that isn’t art. I particularly love this idea.

Interesting places to hang art, if that’s what you’re into.

My favorite spring color palette.

It’s spring break and while I’m not going anywhere, this home is giving me island fever.

And if you didn’t catch it, here’s the room I’m redoing for the One Room Challenge. You’ll be getting updates on the progress every Wednesday.

Happy weekend friends!

apt34 turns 10 & other friday finds

So today is an interesting day in Apt34 history. Today this little ole’ site turns 10 YEARS OLD. Yup. That’s right. I’ve spent an entire decade talkin’ about design ideas, fashion inspirations, travel hotspots, recipes, weddings, trends and more random musings than I care to count. (But if I were to count turns out it is 3,255 posts!) And it appears at least one or two of you have stuck around for most of them. I am forever humbled by that. I’ve been ruminating on these last 10 years and what this milestone means. While I’ll save you that diatribe for another day (coming soon), Apt34 is really three key things – a place to share the amazing work of people I admire from around the world, an occasional personal outlet and most importantly, a community of folks who appreciate an intentional approach to modern living.

Whether you found this corner of the internet due to its aesthetic, or perhaps a cocktail recipe you pinned or maybe just via google, I’m hoping you went away with an idea, inspiration, new info or simply good vibes. That’s the most I can hope for. Well that, and that you come back to check in now and again.

It’s never really certain what the future holds, but for now, I’ll be holding down the Apt34 fort, desperately trying to finish my house and occasionally remembering to shower (TMI??).

And now I give you Friday Finds:

Spring is here – regardless of what the weather is doing. At least this playlist by Glitter Guide is getting me in a spring mood.

I’m finally feeling ready to invest in art for our house, but these crazy cool portraits of her kids cost Liz only $4!! Sold.

Am I the only one who did not realize Easter is in a week?! Whoops. At least I have lots of easter egg ideas here.

If you followed my trips to NYFW back in the day, then you’re likely to know about Bill Cunningham. Did you hear he wrote a secret memoir?! I cannot wait to read it.

Are you into astrology? I’m a Scorpio through and through and super interested to know what Saturn’s return means for me.

Apparently social posts going viral is still very much a thing and two caught my eye this week. The first is my friend Brian Patrick Flynn. You might know him cuz he’s TV famous and the designer of the HGTV dream house. Well, he recently wed his partner Hollis IN ANTARCTICA and the photos are ah-mazing and everyone from HGTV to Harpers Bazaar to People Magazine shared the stunning story and the backlash has been – disturbing, to say the least. It’s 2018 people. Why must we continue to insist on denying people their right to joy and love. Anywho – give Brian a follow – @bpatrickflynn on Instagram – not because of the controversy but because he is hilarious (seriously, you’ll laugh SO hard) and because he’s an extremely talented designer. Who had the coolest wedding of all time.

And then there’s Jenna Kutcher who I only just started following a few months ago. She’s one of those motivational Instagrammers and social media experts, but she gained over 100,000 new followers this week because she posted a pic of herself with her husband. You’d think no biggie right? Well her husband happens to be a personal trainer crossfit fanatic fitness coach guy and Jenna happens to weigh more than 100lbs so the internet went nuts asking how she, a curvy girl, could bag a “hot guy.” The fact that these stereotypes still exist is SO GROSS you guys. Anyway, follow her too – @jennakkutcher – because she’s pretty rad and deserves followers who will check out what she has to say – not follow because of what she looks like.

Enough personal diatribes for you?? Thought so. Well here’s what you might have missed around here this week:

My style ethos for spring.

A spicy spring cocktail to wake up your senses.

My new favorite home tour, maybe ever.

I pin a lot. Like a lot a lot. Do you pin too? Let’s pin together!

A couple of Easter recipes here and here (if you’re a procrastinator like me – eek!)

A favorite spring-inspired interior.

And finally, did you know Apt34 has a newsletter?! That’s right! It’s not spammy or anything. I send it out seasonally (although I’m thinking about going to 1x a month cadence to round up the best posts, blasts from the past and maybe some exclusive content too). You can sneak peek the new edition and subscribe RIGHT HERE.

happy weekend my friends. I truly appreciate each and every one of you.

As I’m endlessly searching for the perfect pieces to finish off our house, I was rather ecstatic to learn that one my faves, Consort Design is launching its own furniture collection! And it’s good people. Rurl good.

weekend links on apartment 34weekend links on apartment 34

I mean, that mirrored console with triangular nobs. Sadly, this is the only teeny tiny sneak peek currently available because the line doesn’t actually go live until April, but trust me I’m going to be counting down the days. Just look at the amazing dining table legs!

So while I’m waiting around for that table, you can check out these links:

Big and bold design was the theme of the week and while it’s not my typical look, this Australian home is really convincing.

Victoria also found this stunning house that keeps the bold and beautiful design ball rolling.

HonestlyWTF proves that print on print on print is a good thing.

But, if black and white is more your thing (like me), then you have to see this kitchen.

And this designer’s entire portfolio is serious eye candy.

In un-design related things:

Do you meditate? I keep trying to convince myself to try it.

Have you seen the New York Times new series Overlooked? They’re profiling significant women in history who never got obituaries in the New York Times (whose obituaries section almost exclusively features men). The piece on Sylvia Plath is so good.

And why Cat Sadler is a badass #timesup.

And what you might have missed around here:

Some more spring-inspired color.

What you need to cook this weekend.

The hottest new wine bar in San Francisco.

Happy weekend friends!

why you should watch queer eye and other friday finds on apartment 34

Friends, the Fab Five are back! Does that phrase mean anything to you? I really hope so. If not, I shall explain.

You see, I was a huge fan of the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy – the show where five gay men made over a straight guy – when it debuted on Bravo back in 2003 (we old!!!!). I only recently heard about the new Netflix reboot (which they’re just calling Queer Eye). But after a positive review or two found its way into my Twitter feed, I decided it was time to see if the remake could live up to the original. You guys, you MUST start watching this show immediately.

why you should watch queer eye and other friday finds on apartment 34

Queer Eye is the infusion of humanity, inclusivity, connectedness, authenticity, and empathy that our country – shit the world – so desperately needs right now. Set in Atlanta, the new Queer Eye is not just depicting gay men in a positive light but they are tackling issues of sexuality, race, religion, misogyny (yes I call this show feminist because they unpack the very definitions of masculine vs feminine) and more. Queer Eye is talking about any ism you can think of and are tackling them head on, but only in the most charming, approachable and truly joy-filled way. I had a perma-smile on my face – except when I was repeatedly moved to tears – as I wiled away an entire Friday night with “the boys” (#momlife).

But I went to bed feeling so uplifted, optimistic and energized by the amazing connection and not just tolerance, but the acceptance that the show espouses. If there is any friend, family member or really anyone you know who is on the other side of a major issue right now, tell them to watch this show. Not to change their mind to your side, but just as an amazing reminder that there is another side. Everyone is so myopic these days, living in both analog and digital echo chambers that only repeat and reinforce their opinions and behaviors. It’s wonderful to have so much choice in entertainment, education, news and the like but it means we can simply segment into little fiefdoms. There isn’t a truly collective concsciouness anymore. But Queer Eye is a wonderful reminder that there are all kinds of people who live all kinds of different ways and that it is ok! Everyone deserves love. Everyone deserves joy. Everyone deserves to be listened to, understood and appreciated for who they are. Yaas queen, yaas (watch and you’ll understand what that means).

But when you need a break from your binge-watching (there are only eight episodes so you might want to pace yourself. I was so sad when they were over) here are other links to check out this weekend! xo

> The new color series on SFGIRLBYBAY is a breath of colorful fresh air.

> I’m loving Jo’s new recap videos. They almost make me want to start documenting my every move. Almost.

> After stalking fashion month, mostly through Eva Chen’s Instagram feed, I’m feeling inspired to get dressed again. But I’m def not wearing designer clothes with a toddler. I think Anh strikes the perfect balance of pulled together and realistic looks.

> I’ve been starting to shop for art for our house and thankfully Cassandra already did a lot of the work for me!

> I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I want a fanny pack.

And a few things you might have missed around here.

> My other favorite new show.

> The new line of lighting with which I’m totally obsessed.

> A spring-inspired update to my dining room.

> The cocktail I can’t wait to mix up this spring. It’s around the corner!

Happy Friday friends and welcome to March! Ah, the year officially feels like it’s going fast now. Eek. But I’m excited for what’s to come – spring is around the corner and many a cool project is on the horizon, but I have to wait to spill the beans a bit.

For now, I’ve just been having so much fun getting back out into the world in 2018 (Portland, LA, and of course out and about in San Francisco). That’s why I’m thrilled to welcome Everlane’s first SF retail store to my hood. She’s big, she’s lovely and she’s going to be my shopping achilles heel. But it is high time I refresh my closet – since I really haven’t done that since giving birth nearly three(!) years ago. Everlane you’re one nice lookin’ Friday find. Continue to scroll for the rest.

Did you know $5 from every purchase of a piece from Everlane’s 100% Human Collection go to benefit either the ACLU or Equality Now? So into it.

This sweet boutique is at 461 Valencia Street in the heart of the Mission and its doors officially open tomorrow, March 3, so if you’re in the Bay Area go get thyself some new ethically produced basics (if you’re not here you can always shop online). And if you can’t shop this weekend, here are some other links to keep you busy!

> Do you remember the lovely December gathering I threw with California Closets as a reminder to take time and make space for what matters most? Well, we made a rurl purdy video about it and it’s live now!

> And my pantry made its national debut on California Closets gorgeous new website!

 > The home tour and discussion of motherhood with glamazon Tylynn Nguyen has me wanting to kick my lulu lemons to the curb and get my badass mama on.

> I’m also loving this NY Times interactive feature on Motherhood. Yes, it should be an official title and hence capitalized.

> Cassandra has me craving all the warm wood.

>I love Jen’s bright and beautiful dining room.

> Need a personal pep talk? Yeah ya’ do.

And what you might have missed around here:

> I’m helping my friend pull together her recently purchased home. Have you weighed in on some of our design decisions yet?

 > Interior designer Lauren Nelson is loving all things curved right now and I’m fully on board.

> What if having an “unfinished home” was something we celebrated?

> And if you follow me on Twitter and appreciate my political leanings, then you might really appreciate this article. Fair warning, it’s a doozy.

Entrepreneurialism has many a pitfall. Having to be good at so many things at once (project management, accounting, communications and whatever it is your business actually does are just a handful). Staying motivated when you work in isolation? Rough. Remembering to change out of your pajamas or leave the house at least once a week. Even rougher (though maybe that’s a problem unique to being a content creator). Regardless of what your small business does, it is particularly hard to keep your work and home lives separated when there is no separation between where you live and where you work. Thankfully, this is where coworking spaces come to the recuse and I’m so excited that there are now multiple options in San Francisco that are both women-only and super design savvy.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

Turns out there are studies (Harvard produced no less), that show entrepreneurs who work in co-working environments are happier and healthier. Not to totally freak any of you fellow work-from-home-peeps out, but according to research, loneliness – often a byproduct of working from home – is “associated with a reduction in lifespan similar to that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day and even greater than that associated with obesity.” Whomp.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

But thankfully a coworking space can leave you feeling more motivated, and more productive all while giving you a built-in social circle you wouldn’t otherwise get as part of your entrepreneurial ways — everything women are looking for, right?! I know I am. But regardless, I still need a really aesthetically pleasing place to work. I’m just a snob like that. Thankfully, there a myriad of options in the Bay Area from which to choose.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

For starters, there is The Hivery. Though not technically in San Francisco (the Hivery is just over the Golden Gate Bridge in the idyllic Mill Valley neighborhood), the Hivery was one of the first women’s inspiration labs and co-working communities when it launched in 2014. It supports women of all ages and in all stages of life as they pursue their work, find their spark and discover their “what’s next” and numerous businesses have been formed out of The Hivery. The founder and former professional ballerina, Grace Kraijvanger is an expert in helping women reach their fullest potential—even if they don’t know what they’re “supposed to do” yet. Grace calls entrepreneurs artists for life. I’m into it.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

Bright, white and sunny, The Hivery is certainly a welcoming environment.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

Radiant Workspaces is an intimate, bright coworking space in the heart of San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. The year-old office attracts an eclectic mix of women – many of them moms – across a diverse range of industries ranging from tech to art to PR and marketing.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

As founder Temi Adamolekun explains, “our intention is to manifest a space for women to connect, collaborate and create and I feel our timing could not be more perfect. It’s also a regular site for networking events, product demos, wine tastings, workshops and a creative hub where we hope many of us will gather and share stories and ideas. At its core, RadiantWorkspace is about community. We’re here to support female entrepreneurs as much as we can, to empower the diverse community and to change our little patch of the world, one empowered woman at a time.”

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

Radiant created partnerships with a strong team of female businesses and artists to achieve their design goals with Hygge & West wallpaper, a gallery wall from Framed & Matted, art from Kelly Tunstall, Melissa Dickenson and Kelly DeFayette and a bounty of blooms from Flora Grubb. Their objective was to create a welcoming, serene and subtly feminine space with abundant natural light where women could find the headspace to get some work done, have meetings, (their meeting room also serves as a private space for women to pump), meet each other and build community. I love Radiant’s women supporting women ethos.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

The latest addition to the women-only workspace is like Radiant’s hipster younger sister. Called The Assembly, the stunning setting recently opened in what was once a church (built in 1913!) in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission district. Intended to serve a bit more as a clubhouse than a traditional co-working space, The Assembly has set its focus on self-care. It’s a place to get work done, but you can also take fitness classes, enjoy coffee or kombucha from the in-house cafe or partake in the litany of social activities that range from movie nights to women of color networking events.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

While I wouldn’t necessarily define the Assembly’s aesthetic as “Apartment 34 style” designers Sara and Rich Combs the husband and wife duo behind the Instagram famous Airbnb The Joshua Tree House—were deeply committed to their Mexico meets Boho vibe and it definitely works. I’m attracted to the soaring ceilings, bright white walls, natural light and beautiful floors – obvi. The Combs also worked with multiple women artists and makers to inject custom design details into the space including Meghan Shimek, Meryl Pataky, Heather Day, Jen Mussari, Aleksandra Zee, Katie Gong and custom cabinet makers Fire on the Mesa.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

The Assembly features a large open workspace with an adjoining dining area, bar seating and more comfortable couches for lounging.

The adjoining gym is a lovely light-filled space perfect for practicing power yoga, strength training or trying a guided meditation. A locker room is available to refreshen up post workout before you have a seat out on the stunning backyard patio.

women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

While I’ve toured many a coworking office in and around San Francisco, I’m the first to do three cheers for these women-centric spaces. Old boys clubs have been in existence, probably since time began, and its refreshing to see both professional and social environments that cater to the unique needs and special interests of women. Now if only I could get out of my self-imposed blogger shell (a bi-product of a decade of talking from behind a keyboard. I swear I used to be really social and at one point actually really fun) and join one of these places.

.women's co-working spaces on apartment 34

But as I recently read, “the secret to getting ahead is getting started.” These days the key to survival is a supportive community, and preferabbly one that doesn’t just live on your phone. So whether you have access to a beautiful space or can simply rally a group of like-minded people to meet at a coffee shop once a week I say do it.

Do you have a stunning co-working space in your area? I’d love to hear about it!

Hey friends. Did you feel like this week was really the start of 2018? Me too. I’m fully back in the saddle, jumping into some exciting projects and tackling some personal ones as well (watch Instagram for more on that this weekend!). But I’m already really digging this year’s vibes. How about you?

must-click links on apartment 34

There’s certainly already been a ton of gorgeousness all around the interwebs. Did you know 2018 marks Apartment 34’s tenth anniversary? Yup. This little spot has been here for a long long time. But that means I’ve known so many of my internet friends for that long too and they never cease to inspire me. I think they’re probably why I’ve stuck around this long.

The following links definitely caught my attention this week.

> Jen’s mid-century master bathroom is per perfection

> Brady revealed his updated living room and I want to move it. Cream, black, brass and gorgeousness all around.

> Amy is inspiring me to get super organized

> Taylor made me want to listen to podcasts

> Meg made me want to read

> and watch Netflix

> Anne offered a beautifully written essay on change and tough vocabulary words

> Erica made Tahoe look extra dreamy

> Victoria has more pretties in her shop Super Marché. Have you shopped it yet?

> Remember when we all marched last year?! Let’s do that again, shall we?

> This is also keeping me positive about the new year

Before you go…

> Did you catch my HGTV obsession?

> Or my attempt to achieve design zen?

I hope you have a marvelous weekend!!

I have loved Pinterest from the moment it was invented. It remains one of my primary sources of inspiration (and the perfect thing to do on long car trips or while waiting in line). Pinterest is good Diane Keaton designed her entire dream house using the platform and wrote a book about. Even when Pinterest changes this or that to our chagrin, I just cannot quit it. So I decided to take a closer look at what caught your fancy on Pinterest in 2017. It was actually kind of fun to scroll back through all my 2017 pins and see what popped (though you do actually have to manually scroll, hunting for the most popular pins by sight. Ugh. Anyone have the Pinterest analytics silver bullet? I’d love you forever if you cared to share). It was fun to look back at all my 2017 pins, but the following ten pins had over 1.5 million views alone. There’s an interesting mix of spaces and styles. I’m intrigued to hear which one of these is your fave today.

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

There’s nothing like a good display. I love how this image dresses up an Ikea cabinet (yes that’s ikea) with a mix of art, empty frames, canvases, books and ceramics. It’s a perfect example of how you can create a stunning set up with ordinary objects.

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

It’s impossible to resist a good shelfie. This space was featured in a showhouse I toured in Seattle. Like the image above it plays on a beautifully consistent color palette – this time with hints of blue, gray and black to create an eye-catching entry.

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

I was a little surprised this bedroom proved so popular as it’s a bit more rustic than my typical taste, but it’s clean, classic and approachable style certainly makes you want to dive right in.

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

The hundreds of thousands of repins of this bathroom prove that square tile is going to stick around for awhile. Black accents too.

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

I adore this kitchen and not just because I almost got that chandelier for our dining room or because my kitchen cabinets are virtually the same color.

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

Proof that a minimalist shelfie can just as, if not more striking than a maximalist version.

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

Love this departure from the light and bright trend. Those warm wood cabinets are so super yummy and those hex floor tiles are just stunning. I definitely see the no uppers trend taking hold in the US this year. What say you?

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

I was thrilled to see a kids’ space make the top 10 pins, particularly because I’m determined to redo my son’s nursery in the first part of this year. It’s time for a proper toddler room!

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

This space is what wanderlust-filled dreams are made of. This is actually a hotel in Mykonos Greece that I was lucky enough to visit a few years back. Maybe I need to return in 2018!

top 10 pins of 2017 on apartment 34

There are a few consistent themes in this collection. There’s obviously a love for neutral color palettes, bright natural light and an open and airy feel. Certainly, all very easy things to love. And I was intrigued to see a moodboard make the top 10. It’s sentiments  – Carpe Diem, All for Love, Note: the least impressive thing I can be in pretty – are spot on. But I also love its rosy vibe. The ochre hues and hits of black help ground the playfulness, but it still feels fresh, bright and optimistic. After a dark feeling year, I think we could all stand to let more light in.

What are your favorite pins of the year? Share a link to your favorite pin in the comments. I’m always looking for more great pins!
